The obsidian doors groaned open.

BOOOOOOM...

The sound rolled through the palace like distant thunder.

Commander Severus Kane stepped aside.

”Prince Kael Asterion...”

”His Imperial Majesty awaits.”

Kael nodded once before walking forward.

Every footstep echoed across the polished white marble floor.

He had walked this path before.

As a child.

As an outcast.

As the forgotten Tenth Prince.

But today...

Everything was different.

The Imperial Court was enormous.

Hundreds of nobles occupied the lower floor.

Behind them stood governors, merchant guild masters, military commanders, judges, and scholars.

Above them, three balconies overlooked the chamber.

The first housed members of the main bloodline.

The second held representatives from the branch families.

The third...

Foreign ambassadors.

Every seat was occupied.

No one wanted to miss today’s court.

At the far end of the chamber...

Upon a staircase carved from white jade...

Stood on the Dragon Throne.

Not made of gold.

Not decorated with jewels.

It was forged from black dragonstone, a material said to have been recovered after humanity’s victory in the First Demon War.

It radiated authority.

Power.

History.

Seated upon it...

He was Emperor Augustus Aurelius Asterion.

His black and silver robes flowed over the throne like liquid night.

A simple golden crown rested upon his head.

No jewels.

No unnecessary decorations.

He didn’t need them.

His presence alone dominated the room.

He wasn’t merely the ruler of an empire.

He looked like a man who had carried one on his shoulders for decades.

To his right sat the Empress.

Elegant.

Cold.

Observant.

Her eyes followed Kael without warmth.

Below the throne...

The princes and princesses stood according to their current succession rankings.

There was no crown prince.

No guaranteed heir.

Each royal child earned their position through merit.

Military victories.

Political alliances.

Economic achievements.

Public support.

The rankings changed every year.

Some smiled as Kael entered.

Others looked annoyed.

Several looked nervous.

Princess Seraphine...

Simply watched.

The court herald struck the marble floor with his staff.

”Prince Kael Asterion ...”

”Lord of Blackwood.”

”Founder of the Black Dragon Company.”

The hall fell silent.

Kael reached the center of the chamber.

He knelt.

”Your Majesty.”

The Emperor’s deep voice echoed through the hall.

You’re late.

Kael raised his head slightly.

”Something happened.”

A few nobles exchanged glances.

Such a direct answer...

Only Kael would dare.

For several seconds...

The Emperor simply looked at him.

Then...

The system appeared before Kael.

”Imperial Analysis”

Scanning...

Emperor Augustus Aurelius Asterion

Threat Level: Unknown

Power Level: Unable to Calculate

Leadership: SSS+

Charisma: SSS

Military Talent: SSS

Political Ability: SSS+

Recommendation:

Observe. Speak carefully.

The screen disappeared.

For the first time...

The system couldn’t calculate someone’s true strength.

The emperor rested one arm on the throne.

”You’ve been busy.”

”Roads.”

”Farmland.”

”Military recruitment.”

”Lower taxes.”

Kael answered calmly.

”My territory needed it.”

”It did.”

The Emperor agreed.

”I’ve read every report.”

The court stirred.

Many nobles hadn’t realized the Emperor had been personally following Blackwood.

A minister stepped forward.

”Your Majesty...”

”If I may.”

The Emperor nodded once.

”Proceed.”

The elderly minister bowed.

”My name is Chancellor Roland Vester.”

He turned toward Kael.

”Prince Kael.”

”Before discussing your achievements...”

”There is another matter.”

He gestured toward the palace doors.

”Bring him in.”

The doors opened.

Grom entered.

Escorted by Imperial Guards.

His weapons had been removed.

His hands remained free.

Whispers instantly spread through the chamber.

”A goblin...”

”Inside the palace?”

”This is disgraceful.”

”No other race has ever stood in this court.”

Grom ignored the whispers.

He simply stood quietly behind Kael.

The chancellor spoke loudly.

”Prince Kael.”

”Do you acknowledge this goblin as your subordinate?”

”I do.”

”Did you knowingly bring a non-human into Imperial territory?”

”I did.”

”Did you understand the political consequences?”

”I did.”

The Chancellor slowly nodded.

”Then explain yourself.”

Before Kael could answer...

Princess Seraphine stepped forward.

She wore crimson, royal attire embroidered with phoenix feathers.

Her voice was sharp.

”Your Majesty.”

”I request permission to speak.”

The emperor nodded.

”Granted.”

She turned toward the court.

”Our kingdom has remained free of other races for generations.”

”Not because we hate them.”

”But because we refused slavery.”

Several nobles nodded.

She continued.

”Now...”

”My younger brother has brought one into the heart of the Empire.”

She pointed toward Grom.

”How can we know he isn’t a spy?”

”How can we know this isn’t the beginning of foreign influence inside our borders?”

More nobles began agreeing.

Even some ministers nodded.

Seraphine looked directly at Kael.

”Answer me.”

”Why should this court trust him?”

The chamber became silent.

Every eye turned toward Kael.

Kael didn’t answer immediately.

Instead...

He looked around the room.

At the nobles.

At the ministers.

At his siblings.

Then...

He looked toward Grom.

The old goblin stood silently.

He didn’t beg.

He didn’t defend himself.

He simply accepted whatever judgment humanity chose.

Kael took one slow breath.

In that moment...

His memories drifted back.

Not to this world.

But to Earth.

History classes.

Documentaries.

Wars.

The rise and fall of civilizations.

Empires that believed fear could hold them together forever.

Empires that collapsed under the weight of their own arrogance.

”Rome...”

”The Atlantic slave trade...”

”The American Civil War...”

”The Haitian Revolution...”

”History always repeated itself.”

The system suddenly spoke.

Its voice echoed only in Kael’s mind.

Host...

Would you like historical analysis?

Kael answered silently.

”Yes.”

A series of blue windows appeared.

Historical Comparison

Civilizations that relied on oppression:

Short-term growth. Long-term instability. Internal rebellion. Economic stagnation. Political corruption.

Average outcome:

Collapse.

Another screen appeared.

Leadership Principle

”An empire is strongest when loyalty is freely given—not forcibly taken.”

The windows disappeared.

Kael finally looked toward the court.

His voice remained calm.

”May I answer with a question?”

The emperor nodded.

”You may.”

Kael turned toward Seraphine.

”Sister...”

”If someone places a sword against your throat...”

”And forces you to kneel...”

”Have they earned your loyalty...”

”...or merely your obedience?”

Seraphine frowned.

She didn’t answer.

Kael looked around the court.

”No chains have ever created loyalty.”

”They create resentment.”

”No whip has ever created honor.”

”It creates hatred.”

He slowly walked across the center of the chamber.

”History teaches one lesson over and over.”

”When rulers treat people as tools...”

”They build kingdoms that fear them.”

”When rulers treat people as people...”

”They build nations willing to die beside them.”

The hall fell completely silent.

Even the foreign ambassadors stopped whispering.

Kael’s gaze settled on Grom.

”This goblin had every reason to hate humanity.”

”Instead...”

”He chose to protect human villages.”

”He chose to fight monsters.”

”He chose loyalty without being forced.”

He turned back toward the nobles.

”If that loyalty isn’t worthy of respect...”

”Then perhaps the problem isn’t him.”

”...Perhaps it’s us.”

Silence.

Absolute silence.

The Emperor remained expressionless.

But for the first time since Kael entered the court...

His fingers tapped the armrest of the Dragon Throne.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

He was thinking.

And everyone in the Imperial Court knew...

When Augustus Aurelius Asterion

started thinking...

History often changed.
