The forge had been silent for three years.

Not because it had run out of iron.

Not because the furnace had broken.

But because the man who owned it had decided that some things were more important than money.

Now...

For the first time in years...

Smoke rose from the chimney.

It began as a thin gray line against the morning sky.

By the time the village noticed, people were already gathering outside.

Children pointed excitedly.

Old men paused in the middle of their conversations.

Women carrying baskets stopped walking.

One whispered quietly.

”...The forge.”

Another looked toward the smoke with disbelief.

”Garrick...”

”...is working again.”

Inside the workshop, flames roared within the stone furnace.

The familiar heat wrapped around the room like an old friend.

Garrick stood in front of the fire without saying a word.

He slowly ran his fingers across the handle of his favorite hammer.

The wood had darkened from decades of sweat and ash.

He hadn’t held it in years.

Not like this.

Not with purpose.

He closed his eyes.

For a brief moment...

He remembered his father standing in this very spot.

”A blacksmith doesn’t shape steel, son.”

”He shapes the lives of the people who use it.”

Garrick opened his eyes.

”...I understand now.”

Kael stood several feet away, watching in silence.

He didn’t interrupt.

Some moments belonged to the people living them.

Not the prince observing them.

Lily quietly stepped beside him.

”You knew he would come back.”

Kael smiled faintly.

”No.”

”I hoped.”

”There’s a difference.”

She looked at Garrick.

”I’ve never seen someone look at a hammer like that.”

Kael folded his arms.

”Because to him...”

”It isn’t a tool.”

”It’s his life’s work.”

The bellows groaned as Garrick pulled them open.

The fire burned brighter.

Orange light danced across the stone walls.

Without another word, he reached into a wooden crate and lifted a rough iron ingot onto the workbench.

He looked toward Kael.

”What do you need first?”

Kael answered immediately.

”Nails.”

The blacksmith blinked.

”...Nails?”

”No swords?”

”No armor?”

”No.”

Kael walked toward a nearby table where Rowan’s construction sketches were spread out.

He pointed to several marked locations.

”The mill needs nearly four hundred iron nails.”

”The bridge north of the village needs new bolts.”

”The water wheel requires metal braces.”

He looked back at Garrick.

”If we make swords before we fix our villages...”

”What exactly are we protecting?”

The forge became quiet.

Even Bram smiled.

”That’s the answer I was hoping to hear.”

Garrick nodded once.

He then lifted his hammer.

CLANG!

The first strike rang through Oakridge.

Conversations outside stopped.

Children looked toward the forge.

Several elderly villagers slowly smiled.

Again.

CLANG!

A second strike.

Then a third.

The rhythm returned.

Steady.

Confident.

Like the heartbeat of a village waking from a long sleep.

Outside, Ethan stood with several younger workers.

He grinned.

”I never thought I’d hear that sound again.”

Walter chuckled.

”My wife always complained it was too loud.”

He looked toward the forge.

”I’d give anything to hear it every morning.”

The younger men laughed.

One of them spoke up.

”If the forge’s running...”

”And the mill’s being rebuilt...”

”What do we work on next?”

The laughter slowly faded.

Everyone turned toward Kael.

Even he hadn’t expected the question.

Not because he lacked ideas.

Because it meant something important.

They weren’t asking if there would be another project.

They were asking...

What came after.

That evening, the workers gathered around a long wooden table outside the manor.

Simple food filled the table.

Fresh bread.

Vegetable stew.

Roasted chicken.

Nothing extravagant.

But for many villagers...

It was the first communal meal they had shared in years.

Kael deliberately sat in the middle.

Not at the head of the table.

He wanted conversation.

Not ceremony.

As bowls were passed around, laughter slowly replaced awkward silence.

Stories were shared.

Old memories resurfaced.

For the first time, Rowan and Garrick argued—not about politics, but about whether oak or ash made better mill wheels.

”You’ll never convince me ash is stronger,” Rowan scoffed.

Garrick took another bite of bread before replying.

”I’m not trying to convince you.”

”I’m telling you.”

The table erupted in laughter.

Even Edwin couldn’t hide his smile.

Kael simply listened.

This...

This was leadership.

Not speeches.

Not commands.

Creating a place where people wanted to gather.

As the meal ended, Kael quietly excused himself and walked onto the manor’s balcony.

The lights of Oakridge flickered in the distance.

Tiny points of orange against the darkness.

The system appeared before him.

”Territory Report”

Hope

When people witness visible progress, productivity increases and unrest decreases.

Kael read the notification twice.

Then looked back toward the village.

”Hope...”

He smiled.

”That’s the strongest foundation of all.”

The system remained silent.

But another message slowly appeared.

Main Quest Updated: Architect of an Empire

An empire is not built with castles alone.

Build institutions that will outlive you.

Current Objectives:

Restore the Oakridge Mill. Establish Blackwood’s first permanent workshop. Investigate Baron Halwen’s finances before his arrival. Prepare for the Baron’s inspection in 5 days.

Kael’s smile faded.

Five days.

While the people rebuilt their future...

Someone else was preparing to protect the old way of doing things.

Baron Cedric Halwen was coming.

And Kael intended to greet him.
