The return journey to Blackwood Manor was far quieter than the journey out.

No one celebrated.

The merchants had been rescued.

The bandits had been captured.

Yet one question lingered in everyone’s mind.

Who was Marcus Vayne?

And more importantly...

How many people like him were hiding inside the Empire?

The wagons rolled slowly along the dirt road.

The rescued merchants sat together near the front, whispering among themselves.

Some glanced toward Kael with gratitude.

Others with curiosity.

The prince who had fought beside commoners...

Wasn’t what they expected.

Walter finally broke the silence.

”Your Highness...”

Kael looked over.

”Yes?”

”What happens to the prisoners?”

Kael glanced at the bound bandits walking beside the wagons.

”They’ll receive a trial.”

One of the merchants frowned.

”A trial?”

”They deserve the gallows.”

Several nodded in agreement.

”They murdered innocent people.”

”They robbed villages.”

”They don’t deserve mercy.”

Kael listened to every word before answering.

”They deserve justice.”

”Not revenge.”

The road fell silent again.

Bram scratched his beard.

”So...”

”If they’re found guilty...”

”They hang?”

Kael nodded.

”If the evidence proves it.”

”And if someone forced them into this?”

”Then we punish the one holding the chains.”

No one argued.

Even Garrick quietly approved.

Hours later...

The walls of Blackwood Manor appeared over the hill.

Smoke drifted from the repaired kitchens.

Workers could be seen carrying fresh timber toward the mill.

The sight alone made everyone smile.

Home.

The manor gates slowly opened.

The guards immediately rushed forward.

”Your Highness!”

Captain Roland saluted.

”We’ve been waiting for your return.”

Kael noticed the concern in the captain’s expression.

”What’s happened?”

Roland hesitated.

”...Someone is inside.”

The courtyard had become strangely quiet.

Servants stood near the walls.

No one moved.

No one spoke.

In the center of the courtyard...

A lone man stood with his back facing the gate.

He wore a long black cloak.

A silver spear rested against one shoulder.

His gray hair reached the middle of his back.

Despite standing completely still...

The air around him felt heavy.

Like a mountain.

Every guard in the courtyard kept one hand on their weapons.

But none dared draw them.

The stranger slowly turned.

His eyes settled on Kael.

Then...

Without warning...

He smiled.

”So...”

”You’re finally home.”

Kael looked toward Captain Roland.

”Who is he?”

”We don’t know.”

”He walked through the main gate this morning.”

”And?”

Roland swallowed.

”...No one could stop him.”

The old man looked around the courtyard.

”So many nervous faces.”

He chuckled softly.

”I merely asked for tea.”

One guard muttered under his breath,

”He asked after disarming twelve guards...”

The old man corrected him.

”I didn’t disarm them.”

”I demonstrated why attacking me would’ve been foolish.”

Kael stepped forward.

Only Edwin recognized what was happening.

Every guard instinctively tried to stop him.

”Your Highness—”

Kael raised a hand.

”It’s alright.”

He continued walking until only five meters separated them.

The stranger observed him carefully.

Not his clothes.

Not his sword.

His eyes.

His posture.

His breathing.

Everything.

Finally...

He nodded once.

”You don’t fear me.”

Kael answered honestly.

”I don’t know enough about you to decide.”

The old man laughed.

”A sensible answer.”

”My name...”

He planted the butt of his spear against the stone courtyard.

”...is Darius Valen.”

The moment those words left his mouth...

Every knight in the courtyard froze.

Captain Roland’s eyes widened.

Edwin nearly dropped the ledger he was carrying.

Even Bram whispered,

”...Impossible.”

Kael looked around in confusion.

”Should I know that name?”

Silence.

Then Edwin stepped forward.

His voice trembled.

”Your Highness...”

”...he’s the Empire’s Shield.”

Lily looked between them.

”The Empire’s what?”

Edwin continued,

”Darius Valen.”

”The man who won the Battle of Ashen Fields.”

”The general who defeated three kingdoms with ten thousand soldiers.”

”The commander who has never lost a campaign.”

Walter slowly removed his hat.

”I thought he retired.”

”So did everyone.”

Kael returned his attention to Darius.

”If you’re truly General Valen...”

”Why are you here?”

The old general answered without hesitation.

”I’ve come to serve.”

The courtyard exploded with whispers.

”What?!”

”He rejected the Crown Prince!”

”He refused House Draven!”

”Even Princess Seraphine couldn’t recruit him!”

”Why would he come here?”

Kael himself looked genuinely surprised.

”I think you’ve mistaken me for someone else.”

Darius smiled.

”No.”

”I’ve spent ten years making certain I haven’t.”

Before Kael could respond...

The system suddenly activated.

Not quietly.

Not like before.

The blue interface flashed violently.

”WARNING”

Extreme Mana Signature Detected.

Ancient Imperial Bloodline Confirmed.

Synchronization Initiated.

Kael’s vision blurred.

His heartbeat accelerated.

A strange warmth spread through his chest.

Then...

Pain.

Intense pain.

He stumbled backward.

Lily rushed toward him.

”Kael!”

He dropped to one knee.

His entire body felt as though it were burning from the inside.

The system’s voice echoed through his mind.

Not mechanical.

Not emotionless.

Powerful.

Ancient.

The host has encountered a catalyst.

Imperial Authority awakening...

Synchronization... 1%... 3%... 7%...

Kael gritted his teeth.

”What... is happening...?”

Darius’s calm expression vanished.

His eyes widened.

”...Finally.”

He whispered the words so quietly that no one else heard them.

Golden light began escaping from beneath Kael’s skin.

At first...

Only tiny sparks.

Then...

The entire courtyard was bathed in a warm golden glow.

The wind suddenly stopped.

The birds perched along the manor walls became completely silent.

Even the horses lowered their heads.

Everyone felt it.

An invisible pressure.

Not crushing.

Not violent.

Majestic.

As though an emperor had just entered the courtyard.

The system spoke once more.

”Imperial Authority Unlocked”: Emperor’s Radiance

Synchronization: 1%

Authority Type:

Sovereign Light

First Ability Acquired:

Imperial Presence

Those who stand before a true ruler instinctively recognize his authority.

Weak-willed enemies experience fear.

Allies gain courage.

Dark-aligned mana is suppressed.

The golden light slowly faded.

Kael remained kneeling.

Breathing heavily.

He stared at his own hands.

Tiny strands of golden mana danced between his fingertips before disappearing.

Silence covered the courtyard.

No one moved.

No one dared speak.

Finally...

Darius Valen smiled.

Not because he was surprised.

Because he had been waiting.

He slowly walked toward Kael.

Then...

To the horror of every noble, knight, and servant watching...

The greatest general in the Empire lowered himself onto one knee.

He planted his spear before him and bowed his head.

”My Prince.”

”I, Darius Valen...”

”...request permission to carry your banner until my final breath.”

The entire courtyard stood frozen.

Somewhere...

Far beyond Blackwood Manor...

The gears of fate had begun to turn.
