The second morning of the march arrived with a bitter chill.

A thick layer of fog blanketed the Graystone Hills.

Visibility was barely twenty meters.

The camp slowly came alive as fires were rekindled and breakfast was prepared.

The smell of roasted meat and fresh bread drifted through the valley.

Some recruits stretched aching muscles.

Others were already inspecting their weapons.

Yesterday had taught everyone one lesson.

The Black Dragon Trials were not a game.

Kael woke before sunrise.

Like every morning since arriving in Blackwood, he began training.

No audience.

No applause.

Just discipline.

His wooden practice sword cut through the cold air.

One strike.

Another.

Then another.

Each movement was clean.

Controlled.

Purposeful.

Nearby...

Someone watched.

Leon Ashford.

The Branch bloodline swordsman remained hidden behind a tree.

He expected the prince to train like every noble he had ever met.

Flashy.

Wasteful.

Full of unnecessary movements.

Instead...

Kael repeated the same basic strike hundreds of times.

Again.

Leon frowned.

”...He’s practicing fundamentals.”

”You noticed.”

Leon nearly jumped.

Darius stood behind him with his hands behind his back.

”I...”

”I wasn’t spying.”

The old general chuckled.

”Everyone spies.”

”The question is what they learn.”

He looked toward Kael.

”What do you see?”

Leon answered honestly.

”A prince.”

Darius shook his head.

”No.”

”I see someone building habits.”

The old general picked up a stick from the ground.

He drew two lines in the dirt.

”A talented swordsman trains until he gets it right.”

He drew another line.

”A master trains until he cannot get it wrong.”

Leon stared at the words.

”Your Highness isn’t the strongest man here.”

Darius continued.

”Not today.”

”But he improves every single day.”

He looked directly at Leon.

”Can you say the same?”

The young swordsman lowered his head.

Roll Call

After breakfast...

A large wooden platform had been built beside the road.

Edwin climbed onto it carrying a thick ledger.

”Today...”

”We begin official evaluations.”

The recruits immediately became silent.

One by one...

Names echoed across the valley.

”Victor Ravenshade.”

The noble stepped forward confidently.

”Elias Thorn.”

The farmer raised a hand.

”Leon Ashford.”

”Marcus Wintermere.”

”Iris Hollow.”

A young woman wearing a faded green cloak stepped forward.

She carried two daggers at her waist.

Instead of armor...

She wore practical traveling clothes.

”What do you do?”

Edwin asked.

”I’m a tracker.”

”A scout.”

”I also hunt magical beasts.”

Kael quietly watched.

The system activated.

”Candidate Analysis”

Iris Hollow

Hunter

Tracking Ability:

Stealth:

A+

Archery:

B+

Interesting.

Kael made a mental note.

The next recruit approached.

A massive man carrying a hammer almost as tall as himself.

”Name?”

”Hugo Stone.”

”Occupation?”

”Blacksmith.”

”Anything else?”

”I punch hard.”

Several recruits laughed.

Even Edwin smiled.

The system appeared again.

”Candidate Analysis”

Hugo Stone

Occupation:

Blacksmith

Strength:

Craftsmanship:

A+

Leadership:

Potential:

High

Recommendation:

Military Forge Candidate.

Excellent.

Kael had been looking for someone like him.

One after another...

Dozens of remarkable people revealed themselves.

A healer.

A cook who had survived three wars.

A former caravan leader.

Twin brothers specializing in shields.

An engineer who designed watermills.

Not everyone was a warrior.

And Kael liked that.

Empires weren’t built by swords alone.

The Branch Bloodline

As the evaluations continued...

An argument suddenly erupted near the registration tables.

A young noble sneered.

”You?”

He pointed toward Marcus Wintermere.

”You’re actually using the Wintermere name?”

Marcus frowned.

”It’s my family.”

The noble laughed.

”Branch family.”

”Not the real Wintermere.”

Several others joined in.

”My cousin married into the Main Branch.”

”They don’t even acknowledge people like him.”

”He’s basically a commoner wearing a noble name.”

Laughter spread.

Marcus quietly clenched his fists.

Leon stepped forward.

”Enough.”

The noble looked at him.

”You too?”

”Another branch rat?”

The atmosphere became tense.

Several recruits began watching.

Waiting.

Would the prince intervene?

Or would he ignore it like every other noble?

Kael walked toward them.

The crowd immediately stepped aside.

The mocking noble bowed confidently.

”Your Highness.”

Kael looked at him.

”What is your name?”

”Julian Valcrest.”

Kael nodded.

”Main Branch?”

Julian smiled proudly.

”Yes.”

Kael turned toward Marcus.

”And you?”

”Marcus Wintermere.”

”Branch family.”

Then Kael looked at Leon.

”Leon Ashford.”

”Branch.”

Finally...

Kael looked back at Julian.

”What can you do?”

Julian blinked.

”...I’m sorry?”

”What are your skills?”

”I’m...”

He hesitated.

”I’m from House Valcrest.”

Kael remained silent.

Julian continued.

”My father commands—”

”I didn’t ask about your father.”

The valley became quiet.

”I asked...”

”What can you do?”

Julian opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Kael looked toward Marcus.

”You build walls?”

Marcus nodded.

”Bridges too.”

”Leon.”

”You fight?”

”Yes.”

”Iris.”

”You track?”

”Yes.”

”Hugo.”

”You forge?”

The giant grinned.

”The best.”

Kael turned back toward Julian.

”See the difference?”

No one spoke.

”They answered with their abilities.”

”You answered with your family.”

Kael’s voice carried across the entire valley.

”In Blackwood...”

”Your surname opens no doors.”

”Your actions do.”

”If you’re from the Main Bloodline...”

”Earn your place.”

”If you’re from a branch bloodline...”

”Earn your place.”

”If you’re a farmer...”

”Earn your place.”

”If you’re a prince...”

He placed a hand on his own chest.

”You earn your place.”

Silence.

Then...

Someone clapped.

It was Elias.

Another joined.

Then another.

Soon...

Nearly the entire camp applauded.

Not because Kael had insulted a noble.

But because...

For the first time...

Someone had judged everyone by the same standard.

Hidden among the applause...

The hooded spy quietly recorded every word into another crystal.

His orders had changed.

At first...

He was only watching.

Now...

The nobles in the Capital wanted transcripts.

Every speech.

Every decision.

Every recruit.

Because the Tenth Prince was no longer rebuilding a forgotten territory.

He was beginning to inspire people.

And that...

Was far more dangerous than an army.
