The afternoon sun hung high above Blackwood Manor.

The meeting with the village elders had ended nearly an hour ago, yet Kael remained seated beneath the ancient oak tree in the courtyard.

The old map of Blackwood was still spread across the table.

Small charcoal marks covered nearly every corner now.

A broken bridge.

An abandoned mine.

A collapsed watchtower.

Three villages without healers.

Two villages that had lost their schools.

One forgotten territory...

filled with forgotten people.

Kael rested his chin against his hand, quietly staring at the map.

He wasn’t looking for what was missing anymore.

He was trying to understand why everything had gone wrong.

Edwin approached, carrying several leather-bound books stacked carefully in his arms.

”They’re heavier than they look.”

Kael glanced up.

”What are those?”

”The manor’s financial ledgers.”

He placed them on the table with a dull thud.

”Every tax record Blackwood Manor has managed to preserve.”

Kael looked at the pile.

”There can’t be much.”

Edwin gave a tired smile.

”There isn’t.”

”Many records disappeared before I became steward.”

”Others were... misplaced.”

Kael slowly opened the first ledger.

The pages were yellow with age.

Some corners had been eaten away by insects.

Others were stained with ink or rainwater.

Even so...

The handwriting was neat.

Whoever had written these books had cared about accuracy.

Lily leaned over the table.

”I thought accounting would be boring.”

Kael laughed.

”It usually is.”

”So why are you smiling?”

”Because numbers don’t have emotions.”

She blinked.

”What?”

Kael turned another page.

”People lie.”

”Rumors spread.”

”Memories fade.”

He tapped the ledger with his finger.

”But if someone steals money...”

”The numbers always leave footprints.”

Edwin looked at the young prince with quiet admiration.

”Your Highness...”

”Where did you learn that?”

Kael smiled to himself.

”In another life.”

Of course...

He couldn’t actually say that.

So he simply added,

”A good teacher.”

Hours passed.

The courtyard slowly grew quieter as the servants returned to their duties.

Only the occasional rustling of pages broke the silence.

Kael wasn’t reading every entry.

He was searching for patterns.

Income.

Expenses.

Harvests.

Construction costs.

Military funding.

One page after another.

One year after another.

Then...

He stopped.

His eyes narrowed.

”Edwin.”

”Yes?”

”Come here.”

The old steward stepped beside him.

Kael pointed toward a series of entries written six years earlier.

”Do you recognize this?”

Edwin adjusted his glasses.

His expression slowly changed.

”...Impossible.”

”What?”

”The grain tax.”

Kael nodded.

”It doubled.”

”Exactly.”

Edwin frowned.

”But I don’t remember any decree from His Majesty increasing grain taxes.”

”There wasn’t one.”

Kael turned another page.

”The following year...”

”It doubled again.”

Lily looked between them.

”I’m confused.”

”If the Emperor never raised taxes...”

”...who did?”

Kael quietly closed the ledger.

”I think we’re about to find out.”

He opened another book.

This one contained reports sent directly to the Imperial Treasury.

Each page bore the seal of Baron Cedric Halwen.

Kael compared both ledgers side by side.

The first recorded what Blackwood actually collected.

The second recorded what had supposedly been sent to the capital.

His eyes moved back and forth.

Again.

Until...

He smiled.

Edwin looked nervous.

”I’ve seen that smile before.”

”It usually means someone is in trouble.”

Kael turned the ledger around.

”Look.”

Edwin followed the numbers.

Then his eyes widened.

”The totals...”

”They don’t match.”

”Not even close.”

Kael nodded.

”Blackwood collected nearly twice as much grain as the Treasury received.”

Silence filled the courtyard.

Lily slowly covered her mouth.

”Someone...”

”...stole it.”

Kael shook his head.

”No.”

”They’ve been stealing it.”

”For years.”

The system activated.

”Imperial Analysis”

Corruption Detected.

Evidence Level:

Moderate

Estimated Financial Loss:

Extensive.

Recommendation:

Continue the investigation.

Current Evidence Insufficient for Formal Accusation.

Warning:

A wounded snake strikes hardest.

Kael dismissed the notification.

”I wasn’t planning to accuse him.”

Edwin looked relieved.

”You weren’t?”

Kael shook his head.

”If I confront Baron Halwen today...”

”He’ll destroy every remaining piece of evidence before tomorrow.”

He tapped the ledger.

”I need proof.”

”Enough that even the Imperial Council can’t ignore it.”

A knock interrupted the conversation.

One of the manor guards hurried into the courtyard.

He bowed quickly.

”Your Highness.”

Kael looked up.

”What is it?”

”We’ve detained someone outside the western gate.”

Edwin frowned.

”A bandit?”

The guard hesitated.

”No, sir.”

”He claims he’s a merchant.”

”But...”

The guard looked uncertain.

”We searched his wagon.”

”And?”

”There wasn’t any merchandise.”

The guard placed a worn leather notebook onto the table.

”We found this hidden beneath the driver’s seat.”

Kael picked it up.

The cover was plain.

Unmarked.

He slowly opened the first page.

His expression didn’t change.

But Edwin noticed the slight narrowing of his eyes.

”What is it?”

Kael silently handed him the notebook.

Edwin read the first few lines.

Then looked up in disbelief.

”They’re reports.”

”On who?”

Kael answered quietly.

”Me.”

Every page contained careful observations.

The prince left Blackwood Manor shortly after sunrise.

He spoke with villagers instead of issuing orders.

He refused formal escorts.

He recruited the carpenter Rowan.

The blacksmith Garrick has resumed operating his forge.

Construction of the Oakridge mill continues ahead of schedule.

Each entry ended the same way.

Report submitted to Baron Cedric Halwen.

Lily frowned.

”He’s been spying on us.”

Kael nodded.

”Not just spying.”

He flipped to the final page.

”He wanted to understand me.”

The last entry had been written only that morning.

Recommendation:

The prince is gaining influence through goodwill rather than force.

Immediate military action is not advised.

His popularity is increasing daily.

Kael slowly closed the notebook.

Then...

To everyone’s surprise...

He smiled.

Edwin looked utterly confused.

”Your Highness...”

”Why are you smiling?”

Kael leaned back in his chair.

”Because Baron Halwen just answered my biggest question.”

”And what question was that?”

”Whether he sees me as a threat.”

Edwin blinked.

”...He does.”

Kael nodded.

”Exactly.”

”If he didn’t...”

”He wouldn’t waste time watching me.”

He looked toward the guard.

”Bring our guest.”

”Alive.”

”And unharmed.”

The guard saluted.

”At once, Your Highness.”

As the guard hurried away, Lily looked at Kael curiously.

”You aren’t angry?”

Kael folded his hands.

”Oh...”

”I am.”

His voice remained calm.

”But angry people make mistakes.”

”I’d rather ask him a few questions first.”

The wind rustled through the old oak tree.

Somewhere beyond the manor walls...

A crow took flight.

And beneath the shade of the ancient branches...

The first real move in Blackwood’s political game had finally begun.
