Steel rang through the forest.

The laughter that had filled the bandits’ camp only moments ago vanished.

One of their men stood frozen.

Kael’s sword rested against his throat.

A single drop of blood slowly rolled down the blade.

The young bandit swallowed hard.

His knees trembled.

He had expected a frightened noble.

Instead...

He found someone who hadn’t wasted a single movement.

The bandit leader’s smile disappeared.

His name was Rogan.

Years ago, he had worn the armor of an Imperial soldier.

Now he wore rusted chainmail stolen from the dead.

His scarred face twisted into a frown.

”So...”

He slowly lifted his sword.

”You’re trained.”

Kael didn’t answer.

His eyes remained fixed on Rogan.

Every breath.

Every shift of weight.

Every twitch of muscle.

The system quietly analyzed everything.

”Combat Analysis”

Target Identified:

Rogan

Former Imperial Sergeant.

Weapon Mastery:

Intermediate Swordsmanship.

Strength:

High.

Weaknesses:

Old injury in the right knee. Overcommits on downward strikes. Relies on intimidation.

Threat Level:

Moderate.

”So that’s why he walks with a slight limp.”

”Kill him!”

One of the archers shouted.

Three arrows flew simultaneously.

Kael moved.

Not backward.

Forward.

He shoved the frightened bandit directly into the arrows’ path.

The arrows buried themselves into the dirt as the terrified man collapsed screaming.

”I surrender!”

The forest echoed with his cries.

Several bandits hesitated.

Rogan roared.

”Get up!”

”No mercy!”

But the man refused.

His sword clattered onto the ground.

Kael noticed it immediately.

Fear spread faster than confidence.

One man surrendered...

Others started questioning themselves.

Behind the camp...

Bram struck.

With one mighty swing of his shovel, he slammed a charging bandit square in the chest.

The man flew backward into two others.

Before they could recover...

Garrick reached the prisoners.

His hammer crushed the lock securing the chains.

The young woman gasped as the iron shackles fell away.

”Can you walk?”

She nodded rapidly.

”My grandfather...”

Garrick knelt beside the elderly merchant.

The old man’s breathing was shallow.

Blood covered one side of his tunic.

”We need to move.”

Walter hurried forward with a small medical pouch.

”I’ll stabilize him.”

Master Rowan pointed toward the forest.

”This way!”

Everything was happening exactly as Kael had planned.

Except...

Rogan smiled.

A cruel smile.

”You’ve made one mistake.”

Kael raised an eyebrow.

”Oh?”

”You assumed...”

Rogan whistled loudly.

The sound echoed deep into the forest.

A moment later...

More footsteps.

Heavy footsteps.

Branches snapped.

From behind the trees emerged another group.

Eight more bandits.

Armed.

Fresh.

Waiting in reserve.

Walter’s face turned pale.

”There are more...”

Lily whispered,

”We didn’t know...”

The system immediately updated.

”Warning”

Enemy Reinforcements Detected.

Total Enemy Count:

Victory Probability:

31%

Recommended Action:

Retreat.

Kael’s expression didn’t change.

Instead...

He quietly sheathed his sword.

Everyone looked at him in confusion.

Even Rogan frowned.

”What are you doing?”

”I’m changing strategies.”

He slowly stepped backward.

Then he raised his voice.

”Lily.”

”Signal.”

She immediately reached into her satchel.

Pulling out...

A simple wooden whistle.

Three sharp blasts pierced the forest.

FWEET!

The bandits laughed.

”A whistle?”

”That’s your grand strategy?”

Rogan shook his head.

”You nobles disappoint me.”

Kael simply looked toward the ridge overlooking the clearing.

”...Now.”

A loud horn echoed across the valley.

Every head turned.

Standing atop the ridge...

Were the merchants?

The same caravan that had been stranded at the broken bridge.

Nearly thirty of them.

Each holding bows.

Not professional soldiers.

Hunters.

Travelers.

Drivers.

People protecting their livelihoods.

The lead merchant shouted.

”Loose!”

A rain of arrows descended.

Bandits scattered.

Several dropped their weapons immediately.

Others dove behind overturned wagons.

The sudden attack shattered their formation.

Rogan cursed loudly.

”They brought reinforcements!”

Kael calmly corrected him.

”No.”

”They brought courage.”

Without their formation...

The bandits lost every advantage.

Bram charged first.

His shovel struck like a battering ram.

Garrick followed close behind, using his massive hammer to smash weapons from enemy hands instead of crushing skulls.

Kael moved through the chaos with surprising precision.

He wasn’t trying to kill.

Every strike targeted wrists.

Shoulders.

Knees.

One after another...

Bandits collapsed screaming, unable to continue fighting.

The merchants watched in disbelief.

”He’s...”

”...disarming them.”

”Not killing them.”

Rogan roared with frustration.

”You fool!”

”If you leave enemies alive...”

”They’ll come back!”

Kael stopped several steps away.

His sword lowered.

”No.”

”They’ll answer questions.”

The former sergeant lunged.

His blade cut downward with enormous force.

Exactly as the system predicted.

Kael stepped sideways.

The strike buried itself into the ground.

For one brief moment...

Rogan’s balance shifted.

Kael struck.

Not with the edge of his sword.

With the pommel.

CRACK!

The blow landed against Rogan’s temple.

The giant collapsed face-first into the dirt.

Silence spread across the clearing.

The remaining bandits looked at one another.

Then...

One by one...

Weapons fell.

Axes.

Swords.

Knives.

Bows.

No speeches.

No heroic declarations.

Only surrender.

As ropes were tied around the prisoners’ wrists, the rescued young woman slowly approached Kael.

She couldn’t have been older than eighteen.

Her travel clothes were torn.

Her hands still shook.

She lowered herself onto one knee.

”Thank you...”

Kael immediately reached down and helped her stand.

”You don’t kneel to me.”

She looked surprised.

”But you’re a prince.”

”And you’re one of my people.”

The words left everyone silent.

The merchants.

The villagers.

Even the captured bandits looked up.

Kael looked around the clearing.

”If rulers expect gratitude for protecting their people...”

”Then they’ve forgotten what their duty is.”

The system appeared.

”Leadership Recognized”

Mercy was demonstrated.

Justice Preferred Over Slaughter.

New Imperial Attribute Increased:

Authority +2

Hidden Reputation Earned:

The Prince Who Protects

The notification faded.

Before Kael could dismiss it completely...

Another appeared.

”Hidden Quest Discovered”

Broken Chains

Interrogate the captured bandits.

Someone has been funding them.

Current Progress:

0 / ?

Reward:

???

Kael’s eyes narrowed.

Funding them?

Bandits didn’t usually wear chainmail.

They didn’t usually have reserve forces.

And they certainly didn’t survive this long without protection.

He slowly turned toward the unconscious Rogan.

Someone...

Was paying them.

And Kael intended to find out who.

Far away...

In a luxurious estate overlooking endless vineyards...

Baron Cedric Halwen calmly sipped wine while reading reports beside his fireplace.

A servant entered, bowing deeply.

”My Lord.”

”The forest camp has gone silent.”

The Baron’s hand stopped.

”What do you mean?”

”We’ve received no signal since midday.”

The servant hesitated.

”Our informant believes...”

”...the prince may have found them.”

For the first time in years...

Baron Halwen’s calm expression cracked.

He slowly set his wine glass down.

Then he whispered to himself,

”...You’re becoming troublesome, Prince Kael.”
