The morning air carried the scent of fresh-cut pine.

The once-abandoned riverbank no longer felt abandoned.

Axes rose and fell in a steady rhythm.

Men hauled logs from Blackwood Manor’s forest while others cleared away decades of rotten timber from the old watermill.

Children ran between the workers carrying buckets of nails, rope, and tools that were almost bigger than they were.

For the first time in years...

Oakridge sounded alive.

Not because the mill had been repaired.

But because people had something to work toward.

Kael stood beneath the shade of a large oak tree, watching quietly.

He hadn’t touched a single tool all morning.

Instead, he carried a notebook.

Every few minutes he wrote something down.

Lily peeked over his shoulder.

”You’ve been writing names.”

”I have.”

”Not plans?”

Kael smiled.

”The plans can wait.”

”The people can’t.”

She tilted her head.

”I don’t understand.”

Kael closed the notebook.

”If I rebuild this mill myself...”

”It helps one village.”

”If I find ten people capable of rebuilding mills...”

”It helps an entire territory.”

Lily stared at him for several seconds before slowly smiling.

”I never think that far ahead.”

Kael laughed.

”Neither did I.”

”My first life taught me that buildings don’t create kingdoms.”

”People do.”

A loud voice interrupted them.

”Move that beam!”

”No, not like that!”

”You’ll split the grain!”

The speaker was an elderly carpenter with a booming voice despite his age.

His beard was completely white.

His back was slightly bent.

Yet every worker instinctively listened whenever he spoke.

Kael watched with interest.

The old man never raised his hammer.

He simply pointed.

Corrected.

Explained.

Within minutes...

The entire worksite moved more efficiently.

Kael nudged Edwin.

”Who’s that?”

Edwin looked over.

”That’s Master Rowan.”

”The carpenter?”

”The best one Blackwood ever had.”

”Ever had?”

Edwin nodded.

”He built half the homes in Oakridge.”

”The chapel.”

”The old bridge.”

”This mill.”

Kael looked surprised.

”This mill?”

Edwin smiled.

”He was only twenty when he helped build it.”

Kael walked over.

Master Rowan was examining one of the replacement beams with narrowed eyes.

He knocked on it twice before shaking his head.

”No.”

A young worker frowned.

”But it’s straight.”

”It is.”

”Then why not use it?”

The old carpenter tapped the center of the beam.

”Hear that?”

The young man blinked.

”...No.”

”Exactly.”

He handed the hammer over.

”Now you try.”

The young man struck the wood.

Thunk.

Rowan nodded.

”Wet.”

The worker looked confused.

”You can hear that?”

”I can.”

”How?”

”I’ve worked with wood for sixty years.”

The young man lowered his head.

”I’ll get another beam.”

Kael couldn’t help smiling.

Experience.

Real experience.

Not something the system could instantly replace.

”Master Rowan.”

The old carpenter turned.

His eyes narrowed.

”You must be the young noble everyone’s talking about.”

Kael bowed respectfully.

”I’m Kael.”

”I know who you are.”

Rowan looked him up and down.

”You’ve got soft hands.”

Lily gasped.

Edwin nearly coughed.

No one spoke to princes that way.

Kael simply laughed.

”You’re right.”

”I’ve never claimed otherwise.”

The old carpenter grunted.

”At least you’re honest.”

For a while...

Neither spoke.

They simply watched the workers.

Finally, Kael asked,

”Why didn’t you repair the mill yourself?”

Rowan’s face became unreadable.

”I tried.”

Kael remained silent.

The old man continued.

”I wrote letters.”

”I drew new plans.”

”I even offered to work for free.”

He looked toward the broken gears lying beside the river.

”The Baron’s office rejected every request.”

”They said the village wasn’t worth the expense.”

His voice remained calm.

But Kael heard the disappointment hidden beneath it.

Not anger.

Heartbreak.

”They buried twenty years of my work.”

Kael nodded slowly.

”I have another question.”

Rowan crossed his arms.

”What?”

”If I wanted to rebuild every bridge...”

”Every mill...”

”Every workshop...”

”Could you teach others?”

The old carpenter stared at him.

For several long seconds...

He said nothing.

Then he laughed.

A deep laugh that echoed across the river.

”You’re asking the wrong old man.”

Kael blinked.

”I am?”

”I’ve been waiting thirty years for someone to ask me that.”

The laughter around them slowly faded as workers noticed the conversation.

Even Ethan stopped carrying timber.

Rowan rested both hands on his walking stick.

”I thought my knowledge would die with me.”

”My sons moved away.”

”My apprentices became farmers.”

”The village stopped building.”

”So...”

He shrugged.

”There was no one left to teach.”

Kael looked around at the younger workers.

”There is now.”

The old carpenter followed his gaze.

For the first time...

His tired eyes shone with purpose.

”You really mean it.”

”I do.”

”You’d pay boys to become carpenters?”

”I’d pay anyone willing to master a craft.”

Rowan shook his head in disbelief.

”No, the Lord has ever said that.”

Kael smiled.

”Then perhaps it’s time one finally did.”

The system quietly appeared.

Kael dismissed the screen.

He didn’t need it to tell him Rowan was valuable.

He had already decided.

”Master Rowan.”

The old man looked up.

”I’d like to make you an offer.”

”I’m listening.”

”I don’t want you to rebuild one mill.”

Kael extended his hand.

”I want you to build the greatest school of craftsmen this empire has ever seen.”

Silence.

The river continued flowing.

The wind rustled through the trees.

Around them, the workers had stopped pretending not to listen.

Rowan looked at Kael’s outstretched hand.

His weathered fingers trembled slightly.

Not from age.

From emotion.

For decades...

He had believed his life’s work would be forgotten.

Now...

Someone wasn’t asking for his labor.

They were asking for his legacy.

The old carpenter slowly reached forward.

Then firmly shook Kael’s hand.

”I’ll teach them.”

From the hill overlooking Oakridge...

The same hooded spy lowered his spyglass.

He didn’t understand everything he’d just witnessed.

But he understood enough.

The Tenth Prince hadn’t recruited a carpenter.

He had recruited the man who would teach an entire generation.

The spy turned his horse toward Baron Halwen’s estate.

His report would contain only one sentence.

The prince is no longer gathering followers.

He is gathering founders
