Journey to Planar World

When Kei was about to close the room door, Charlie deftly held the edge of the door with his palm.

”Wait a moment, Kei.”

”I know this sounds completely absurd and hard for you to just take at face value. But it’s very easy to prove the truth of my words.”

Kei raised an eyebrow, still staring at him with deep suspicion.

”As I said earlier.” Charlie continued with a faint smile. ”The power that erased my existence from the memories of mortals is not at all effective on gods, since they clearly fall outside that category. So, let’s meet Goddess Astraea right now and ask her about this directly.”

Kei observed the look on Charlie’s face, which appeared so confident without a shred of doubt.

After considering it for a moment, Kei finally nodded. After all, she had nothing to lose just by confirming it.

”Alright. I’m willing to trust this option for now. Let’s go see Astraea-sama.”

And so, Charlie and his group walked together toward another inn room occupied by the Goddess of Justice.

The person knocking on the door was Kei.

*KNOCK-KNOCK-KNOCK!*

”Astraea-sama, sorry to disturb your rest.” Kei spoke in a polite tone from outside the door. ”There is something I would like to ask and discuss with you.”

From inside the room, Astraea’s gentle voice answered warmly, ”Ah, Kei? Wait a moment...”

The voice was accompanied by the rustling sound of clothing fabric being straightened out. Clearly, the Goddess had just finished changing her clothes.

Hearing that rustling, Kei suddenly cast a sharp side-eye toward Charlie beside her.

The gaze in her blue eyes seemed to issue a stern warning so that the youth would not imagine blasphemous things about the Goddess in his head.

Charlie could only offer a wry smile at receiving that glance. On the other hand, however, he felt this situation was rather strange yet refreshing, as this was a side of Kei she had never shown him until now.

Not long after, the wooden room door opened.

A figure of a beautiful goddess stood at the threshold. Astraea had long, walnut-brown hair neatly swept into a bun at the back of her head, paired with a set of deep blue eyes that were exceptionally clear, reminding anyone of an expanse of starry seas at night. She wore a simple dress combined with an elegant long skirt.

Seeing a group of five people standing lined up in front of her room made Astraea slightly surprised—especially since she had never seen the figure of the blonde-haired girl standing near Charlie before.

”What is this? Why are you all gathered in front of my room this late at night?” Astraea asked amiably with a gentle smile. ”Are you planning to invite me out for a walk?”

Kei did not beat around the bush at all. She directly pointed toward Charlie and asked straight to the point.

”Astraea-sama... do you know this man? He just claimed to be my boyfriend. Very strange, isn’t it? Even though I don’t know him at all.”

”...”

Hearing that question, the tranquility that usually enveloped Astraea’s face crumbled instantly. She stared back and forth between Charlie and Kei with an astonished look.

As a god possessing the passive ability to discern lies, Astraea could verify that her child was not lying or joking. Kei was completely serious about her words.

This fact only served to confuse Astraea even more. After all, they had all just eaten dinner together not long ago!

How could it be that in a span of just one hour, Kei could forget Charlie?

Astraea had never heard of any magic or curse in the Lower World capable of manipulating memories.

With a facial expression turning serious, Astraea shifted her gaze to look at Charlie.

”Charlie... Explain to me. What actually happened? How could Kei become like this?!”

”...”

Kei was an extremely intelligent girl. Astraea’s shocked reaction and the words coming out of her mouth were already enough to prove that all of Charlie’s strange claims earlier were indeed true.

Kei turned her head slowly toward the youth beside her, waiting for a full explanation with a somber expression on her face.

In any case, realizing the fact that she had forgotten someone very precious to her clearly brought a feeling of discomfort.

”...”

Naturally, it was impossible for Charlie to explain about Transcendents and the God’s Law outright.

After all, those two concepts originated from beyond the reality of this world. Although he was certain Astraea would not be obsessed with exploiting another world like the other Orario gods who were starved for entertainment to fill their eternal boredom, explaining something that complex was still far too troublesome.

So, Charlie decided to reveal only a portion of the truth.

”Actually, it’s like this, Astraea-sama...”

”I just managed to awaken a new spell due to leveling up to Level 7. Alongside that, the capability of this magic is somewhat beyond imagination. Unfortunately, the magic carries an inherently troublesome side effect: my existence is erased from the memories of mortals. Even if I interact and reintroduce myself to them, the moment I leave their sight, the memories about me will be instantly erased again.”

Because Charlie’s current essence was that of a Transcendent—who technically held a rank equal to or even transcending the gods in the world of Danmachi—Astraea’s passive ability to detect lies did not work on him at all.

Astraea had no way of knowing that Charlie’s explanation was a neatly crafted combination of truth and lie.

”W-Wait a minute... did you just say Level 7?!” Astraea widened her eyes, thoroughly shocked. ”That means... you are the second Level 7 adventurer in Orario right now besides Ottar of the Freya Familia?!”

Even though to the gods even a Level 9 adventurer was no match for their sealed Arcanum power, the pleasure of the gods residing in the Lower World was to enjoy the commotion and dynamics created.

So, Astraea was tremendously shocked by the revelation of Charlie’s strength, which in an instant had come to stand at the absolute peak of Orario.

What Astraea did not know was that the youth before her actually possessed power capable of rivaling or even surpassing the majority of the gods themselves.

After the shock over that fantastic level-up subsided, Astraea’s lovely eyebrows knitted together once more as she digested the second point of Charlie’s words.

”Carrying a side effect that erases the memories of all mortals...” She murmured while lightly tapping her chin. ”I’ve never heard of a spell possessing such a specific effect. Truly, this Lower World is indeed always filled with mysterious surprises that never fail to keep things from being boring.”

Kei, who had been listening carefully all along, looked at Astraea with an urgent tone.

”Astraea-sama... is everything this man said really genuine?”

Astraea looked at Kei and then nodded firmly. ”Yes, Kei. I confirm all of Charlie’s words.”

”In fact, it was Charlie who first brought you to see me and helped you join the Astraea Familia. Try to remember back, Kei... what was the initial chronology when you first entered my Familia?”

”...”

Kei fell silent. She held her temple, attempting to dig through the memories inside her mind, but her facial expression turned increasingly confused before she finally shook her head.

”I-I... I only remember that I had suddenly joined.” She confessed in a quiet and hesitant voice. ”The process of how I met Astraea-sama and the reason I joined... it all feels extremely blurry and unclear.”

”See? There’s a very noticeable inconsistency in your memories.” Astraea said gently, then turned her gaze back to Charlie with a look full of sympathy. ”Charlie, is there a way or a solution to resolve this situation? I mean... how can Kei remember you again like she used to?”
