The Ace Bigshot Becomes A Farmgirl

Shu Yu furrowed his brows and turned to look at him.

The latter shook his head, ”I’m fine. It seems they want to have a private conversation with me.”

Cheng Wu chuckled, ”No wonder he’s the Top Scholar Meng.”

Shu Yu and the few others could only frown as they were ushered towards the backyard.

Meng Yunzheng was led into the front hall, where a person stood with his back to him.

Although he couldn’t clearly see the person’s face, as soon as Meng Yunzheng entered the room, he noticed the man’s wrist was adorned with a string of beads.

He thought he knew who this was.

Indeed, upon hearing footsteps, the person turned around and smiled at him, saying, ”Young Master Meng, I’ve long admired your name. Congratulations on recently becoming the top scorer.”

Meng Yunzheng looked at him, scrutinizing for a while, ”What is your relationship with Rong Dun, who killed the entire Song Family years ago?”

He had wanted to ask this question for a long time. Although the extermination of the Song Family was ordered by Gong Qiu, the killer was already dead. Yet the bead left behind, he had never seen it on anyone else except the person in front of him, who carried an identical string.

The man’s eyes narrowed, his expression distorted for a brief moment, then he laughed again, ”He is my brother.”

Meng Yunzheng suddenly understood, so they were real brothers, no wonder they wore identical beads.

However, Rong Dun, the elder brother, was an intimate subordinate of Gong Qiu in his early years, while the person in front of him was merely an insignificant steward at the black market in Jiangyuan County just a few years ago.

The difference in abilities between these brothers was quite significant.

Seeing Meng Yunzheng stay silent, the man did not continue the conversation. He did not realize it was the beaded wrist that revealed his identity, assuming Meng Yunzheng had seen Rong Dun around Gong Qiu before, and because he resembled his brother, Meng Yunzheng had asked about their relationship.

The elder brother had been dead for many years. The man’s emotions quickly calmed down, and he gave Cheng Wu a signal, upon which the latter brought over a chair.

Meng Yunzheng sat opposite the man, ”What do you want to tell me? Where is Lord Cheng? Am I not worthy enough to meet him in person?”

”Young Master Meng, you jest. With your status, naturally anyone can meet you. After all, you are the Prince’s biological brother.”

Meng Yunzheng’s expression darkened, ”Be careful what you say. My surname is Meng, and I have nothing to do with your master.”

The man merely smiled, ”Facts are facts; why deny them, Young Master Meng? I really can’t understand why a talented person like you, with a blood relationship with our master, insists on opposing him. Our master values talent and, with your talent and abilities, if you work for him, your future would be limitless. Not to mention high office and wealth, even a princely title is possible.”

Meng Yunzheng found it amusing, ”So you’ve come to recruit me?”

”Young Master Meng, you jest. I’m merely stating facts. You are skilled in both literature and martial arts, and have topped the examinations six times, a remarkable feat. Our master is a talent-loving person and hopes Young Master Meng can find the right path.”

Meng Yunzheng leaned back against the chair, ”I know whether I have talent or not, but I’m not interested in the high offices and honors you talk about, nor in the royal family connections. If I wanted to enter the court, I could have taken office upon passing the Advanced Scholar exam; why bother with setting up an academy as a Mountain Master.”

The man fell silent. This was something they couldn’t comprehend or understand.

Years of painstaking study were all for the day one could become an official, whether for fame and wealth or truly to serve the people and express heartfelt devotion; this was the original intention of studying.

Just like them, they worked hard all for the sake of seeking a future.
