The Ace Bigshot Becomes A Farmgirl

On this day, Zhao Xi did not leave the guesthouse.

However, Shu Yu and Meng Yunzheng visited the unconscious Ms. Wei, and to avoid suspicion, they went out several times under the pretense of looking for the Dongqing Temple master.

Honestly speaking, they had been in the southwest for quite a few days, from Heichang County to Righteous Dao Village, then to Qingxuan County. The people from the black market were only watching them without taking any action, leaving them unsure of what the real intention was.

But this turned out well; since Ms. Wei suffered serious injuries, their inaction allowed Shu Yu and the others time to recuperate.

When they returned to the guesthouse in the evening, the staff brought the meals up and quietly mentioned, ”The guest who bumped into Young Master Meng in the morning seemed to try probing me for your jackfruit purchasing reasons. As agreed, I only said it was for Young Master Zhao to use in medicine, and that as a mere staff member, I didn’t know much else.”

This explanation conveniently gave Zhao Xi an excuse for staying indoors and not leaving the room for the past two days.

Meng Yunzheng knew that those tailing them would be suspicious, as it was indeed abnormal to carry a basket big enough to fit a person. So on his first trip of sending jackfruit upstairs, he carried real items. In truth, even if the person hadn’t gone out and bumped into him, he would have deliberately tripped over the doorstep upon entering the room to spill the jackfruit out, letting them see the contents.

With this little act, even if their suspicions weren’t entirely alleviated, it made them half-believe and half-doubt.

Otherwise, Meng Yunzheng believed they would definitely find an opportunity to break into Zhao Xi’s room.

Now they were merely probing the staff.

The staff continued, ”That person also asked me where the jackfruit was bought, and I said it was bought early in the morning from the market. I guess they’ll go check tomorrow.”

Meng Yunzheng nodded; he indeed spotted the jackfruit at the market and bought two full baskets. It wouldn’t be difficult for them to verify.

The staff set up the meal and left.

Shu Yu and the others rested for the night, and the next day when they asked about Ms. Wei, there was still no change.

The two could only continue to act nonchalantly while going outside to check. Shu Yu initially wanted to look at the alley where Ms. Wei hid, but before reaching the area, she saw it was surrounded by officers.

Meng Yunzheng said, ”Earlier, I left in a hurry, leaving quite a bit of bloodstains in the alley that haven’t been cleaned up. Besides, it was right behind the shop that caught fire, so it certainly drew people’s attention.”

Moreover, the shop fire was so severe, it was rumored that the servants supposedly burned to death inside weren’t found, naturally leading to suspicions of arson. Coupled with the bloodstains in the alley, the case inevitably became even more bewildering.

”Who do you think wants to harm Ms. Wei?” Shu Yu shivered at the thought of the two holes in Ms. Wei’s abdomen. Had Meng Yunzheng not rescued her, had he not had the life-saving and blood-stopping pills in hand, had Zhao Xi not been the attending physician, Ms. Wei wouldn’t have survived.

Meng Yunzheng remained silent for a moment, ”I suspect it can’t be unrelated to the boss of the shop she’s associated with.”

That day, he was hiding in the shadows listening to the surrounding crowd’s gossip, feeling it very strange.

People said the shop’s young lady had heard noises coming from Ms. Wei’s room, yet the fire still broke out.

”Maybe, the main family had some secret that Ms. Wei happened to overhear, so they planned to silence her.” This was the most likely possibility.
