The Scumbags Guide to Enslaving Demon's

But the Regent’s voice was gone.

The Maw Core chamber began to collapse around the silence it left behind. Black coral split from the arches overhead, and the suspended heart sphere sagged toward the abyss, no longer held in place by the third bell’s command. Water surged through the broken reef passages, carrying red fragments and pale teeth into the dark.

”Out!” Orena shouted.

The team ran for the current route. Veyra kept Austin Veyron moving when the pain in his ribs slowed him down, and Rin led them through the falling debris, quick and sure-footed even in the chaos. Nyra held the neutralized heart shard close to her chest, its blue-black light flickering as the Maw Core died back into something smaller and less certain by the second.

Behind them, the free hunger of the Black Maw began to move.

It came as a swarm, though not creatures exactly — shapes made from black water, reef dust, and the leftover appetites of everyone the Regent had conditioned over the years. The swarm rushed through the collapsing chamber, tearing at anything that moved in front of it.

”Coercive echo,” Sable said. ”The command is gone, but the fear remembers it.”

The first wave struck Orena. She drove her spear through the black shape, but it split and reformed around the weapon as though it had never been touched. Rin’s salt arrows scattered two more of the things, and Veyra cut a path toward the current tunnel, refusing to let any of it slow her down.

Austin Veyron felt the swarm touching his hunger.

It didn’t ask him to rule. It tried something subtler, working to convince him that taking everything was the only way to stop everything, and DEVOUR answered that suggestion with a savage pull.

”Target?” Veyra shouted.

”Coercive echo,” Austin Veyron said. ”Not the hunger itself. Not the swarm’s raw force.”

”Witnessed,” Veyra said.

”Witnessed,” Sable said.

Austin Veyron planted the white root chain against the reef floor and opened DEVOUR.

The swarm’s echo tasted like panic, sharp and metallic on his tongue, carrying the same old equation the Regent had taught for years: hunger means take, taking means survive, survival means someone else goes without. Austin Veyron consumed only the coercion buried inside the echo, leaving the rest of it untouched.

The swarm broke apart instantly.

Black water fell harmlessly around the team as the reef dust settled to the floor. The remaining hunger was still there, painful and real, but it no longer had a direction forced into it.

They reached the current tunnel just as the chamber behind them folded inward completely.

The escape was violent. The deep water threw them through narrow cracks and past glowing reef veins, tumbling them end over end faster than any of them could control. Ceryn held the record sheet under their coat even while the current spun them, and Orena found the upper channel by following the pull of colder water, trusting instinct over sight the whole way up.

They burst from the reef beneath the Hunger Fortress at dawn.

The settlement above had changed in the hours they’d been gone. Dock cords hung loose from pier rings, swaying uselessly in the wind, and the patrol boats drifted without orders. Workers stood in small groups around the food stores, unsure whether taking a ration would trigger punishment out of old habit. Some had already begun sharing what they had. Others guarded crates with improvised weapons, not yet ready to trust the quiet.

Selka found them near the lower dock with Kessa and the freed gallery survivors.

”You broke it,” Kessa said.

”We broke the command,” Austin Veyron said. ”The hunger is still yours to decide how to live with.”

”That is not easy,” Selka said.

”No,” Veyra said. ”But it is yours.”

A tall demon woman with dark brown horns stepped out from the dock crowd, wearing a worker’s vest and carrying a ledger board under one arm. There was no black cord around her wrist.

”My name is Daroa,” she said. ”I managed food stores before the Regent’s feeders took control. People are hungry, and if no one organizes distribution, the reef will tear itself apart.”

Austin Veyron looked at the surrounding workers.

”What do you need?” he asked.

”Not a lord,” Daroa said. ”Food lists. Water routes. People willing to stand at the stores and make sure no one is hoarded out.”

Ceryn opened the record sheet. ”We can document voluntary roles,” the record keeper said. ”No permanent offices. Every shift witnessed.”

Daroa considered that for a long moment. ”Good. I choose food coordination for the first day. After that, the reef decides if I keep doing it.”

Kessa stepped beside her. ”I choose guard rotation. Not command. Just making sure people reach the stores safely.”

Selka nodded. ”I choose to guide the lower workers out of the old feeding routes.”

The small council began there, on a wet dock beneath the shadow of the Hunger Reef. It was fragile, and it could fail at any point, but no one had been crowned to make it happen, and that absence felt strange after so many years of the fortress deciding everything for everyone below it. Workers drifted closer to listen, some out of curiosity, some out of a lingering suspicion that this too would turn out to be another kind of trap wearing a gentler face.

The first food shift was tense. Daroa opened one crate at a time while Kessa’s volunteers formed a loose corridor from the stores to the dock, and no one was forced to stand in line. No one was denied because they had failed a feeder rule that no longer even existed. When two workers argued over a ration sack, Selka simply asked who had gone the longest without food and who could wait one more hour, and they worked it out between themselves, without a muzzle deciding for them.

Austin Veyron stayed back from the distribution, though every hungry face made the dark mark on his wrist ache faintly. He could feel the impulse to step forward and make the answer faster, cleaner, more certain. Veyra stood beside him without touching him.

”Watching is work too,” she said.

”It feels like doing nothing.”

”It is not nothing when the alternative is taking the choice away.” She said it simply, without any weight of correction in it, just a fact laid down between them like something she’d learned the hard way and wasn’t interested in relearning.

Nyra watched the horizon where Vordessa had vanished, her heart shard quiet now in her hands. Austin Veyron noticed a thin red-black mark moving beneath the skin of his wrist, slow and deliberate.

”What is that?” he asked.

Nyra’s face tightened. ”A trace from the Maw Core,” she said. ”When you consumed the compulsory clause, some dark hunger attached to you.”

”Can you remove it?”

”Not without knowing what it has connected to.”

Veyra looked at the mark, then at Austin Veyron. ”How does it feel?” she asked.

He wanted to say fine, and he wanted the conversation to end there. Instead, he told the truth.

”Like every hungry person nearby is a door I could open.”

Sable’s eyes narrowed. ”And do you want to?”

”Sometimes.”

The admission hung between them, heavier than he’d meant it to be.

Veyra didn’t step away from him. ”Then we keep naming it,” she said. ”We keep choosing.”

A warning horn sounded from the neutral vessel.

Vessa stood at the rail with the relay token glowing white in her hand.

”Grand Meridian,” she called. ”Emergency message.”

Austin Veyron took the token from her, and the script inside was Elena’s, hurried and uneven, written in obvious haste.

HUNGER FEVER IN SOUTH QUARTER. PEOPLE REPORT EMPTY APPETITES, THEN COMPULSION TO TAKE FOOD. NO RED ROOTS VISIBLE. CITY HOLDING, BUT NEED GUIDANCE.

Vordessa’s threat had reached home.

Austin Veyron read the message twice, hoping the second read would somehow say something different than the first. The Black Maw council was still forming, and the Hunger Reef was still unstable, but Grand Meridian was now facing the same hunger logic, from a source no one there could even see.

Daroa saw his expression. ”Your city needs you,” she said.

”My city needs people who can choose,” Austin Veyron said. ”It has them.”

”Does it have time?”

He looked down at the dark hunger mark on his wrist before he answered her.

”No,” he said.

Orena pointed toward the neutral vessel. ”The coast current can get you back to Ossuary Harbor in a day if the weather holds,” she said. ”From there, the court route reaches Grand Meridian faster than the roads would.”

Ceryn folded the provisional council record and handed a copy to Daroa.

”We will send every report we can,” they said. ”The reef is not alone.”

Daroa accepted the page. ”Neither are you,” she said.

The team returned to the neutral vessel as the Black Maw’s residents began their first uncommanded food line, slow and uneven but entirely their own to shape.

Nyra lingered at the rail a moment longer than the others, watching the settlement shrink behind them, the loose knots of people still sorting themselves into something workable. She didn’t say what she was thinking, but Austin Veyron could guess it easily enough: that freedom given all at once, without practice and without time to learn its shape, could look almost exactly like chaos before it looked like anything else.

Behind them, the Hunger Reef remained dangerous.

Ahead, Grand Meridian was hungry.
