The Scumbags Guide to Enslaving Demon's

Vordessa had fled with the heart.

And the Ash Meridian had just discovered it was at war.

The escaped prisoners clustered in the ravine beneath the red-lit sky. All eyes were on the forge lights in the distance. Every flash of brightness was another puzzle piece of what happened to the Crownforge. The lights burned in the hills, in hollowed-out quarry pits, and in the abandoned ash road that stretched east.

Nysara spoke first.

”We cannot stay here.”

No one contradicted her.

The black-antlered demon threaded through the crowd. She was not giving orders. She was asking short questions. Who could walk? Who had water? Who knew the northern ravines? Which of these people were hurt badly enough that they needed to be carried? Answers were a moving plan.

Lysenne pointed to the southwest. ”There is a neutral settlement under the quarry line. Cinder Hollow. It trades water and hides from every sovereign that remembers it exists. We can reach it before dawn if we stay off the ash road.”

”Can it hold this many people?” Doria asked.

”It can take people for one night.” Lysenne shook her head. ”After that, the wardens will ask questions.”

”Let them.” Austin Veyron spoke up.

Veyra joined him as people began to gather packs and organize. ”You are thinking of Grand Meridian.”

”I am thinking of every forge light between here and the city.”

”You did not create Vordessa’s cruelty.”

”I gave her a reason to move faster.”

Veyra stared at him hard. ”That is not the same thing as being responsible for every decision she makes.”

The words should have helped. Instead, Austin Veyron felt DEVOUR startle beneath his ribs. It did not care about responsibility. It cared about threats, and every red light on the horizon was a threat that needed to be swallowed.

He re-wrapped the Crownforge splinter in white cloth.

”We move.” He gestured for the people to follow.

The first hour passed in tense silence. The ravine narrowed to a twisting path between slag cliffs. Nysara took point with the able-bodied walkers. Lysenne followed close behind her. Doria attended to the injured. Taryn and Kesra ranged ahead. Rin disappeared into the ash every time the path widened too far, then reappeared with a sharp nod or a warning gesture.

Eshra walked beside Austin Veyron.

”You destroyed the forge,” she said.

”Not all of it.”

”You destroyed the part that was burning people into crowns.”

Austin Veyron did not reply.

Eshra looked at the black cloth at his belt. ”You are afraid you will become another forge.”

It was too direct to ignore.

”I am afraid I will become efficient,” he said.

”That is not always the same as cruel.”

”No. But it is close enough that I have to watch it.”

A whistle echoed in the ravine.

Rin appeared on the cliff edge above them. ”Pursuit. Six, maybe eight. Ash pack. They are moving on the ridge.”

Lysenne lost color. ”Vordessa’s recoverers.”

”Can they track this group?” Austin Veyron asked.

”They track the metal in the bands. The prisoners who still have fragments—”

Nysara lifted one of the red shards from her wrist. ”Then we do not run as a line.”

The ash pack began to descend before anyone could answer.

They slid down the cliff faces on iron claws, thin demons in layered gray armor with furnace masks over their mouths. Their eyes glowed red through the slits. Each had a hooked chain designed to snag a wrist, a neck, a person who tried to run away.

”Recover the marked,” their leader shouted. ”The Matron offers amnesty to anyone who returns.”

A murmur went through the refugees.

Lysenne cursed under her breath. ”They will say anything to make someone break formation.”

Austin Veyron stepped forward. ”No one has to stay with us. But they do not get to take you with a lie.”

The pack leader cocked her masked head. ”And you are who?”

”A problem.”

The first chain came for him.

Austin Veyron caught it and pulled. The recoverer was stronger than she looked, but Veyra struck the chain from the side and changed its angle. Kesra swept the demon’s legs. Nysara rammed her iron bar down on the mask.

The fight spread through the ravine.

Rin’s arrows kept the pack from reaching the walkers. Maelis set small fires along the cliff walls, not wide enough to trap anyone, but bright enough to expose every climber. Sarielle turned the ash wind into a silver barrier around Doria’s group.

Taryn fought at the side of two former prisoners who had picked up fallen tools. She was not commanding them. She was showing them where the armor joints opened and letting them choose the strikes.

Austin Veyron saw the pack leader break through the fire line.

She was taller than the others, her armor engraved with thin red names. Her hooked chain was wrapped around a small black compass that spun toward the red band shards among the refugees.

”Tracker.” Sable stepped beside him.

The leader threw the compass forward. It opened in the air, releasing a swarm of red threads.

Austin Veyron met it with DEVOUR.

He devoured the tracking command before it could land on anyone. The threads rushed into him, carrying the sharp, narrow feel of every forge site in the region. He saw seven lights, then nine. He saw regional lieutenants accepting commands from Vordessa’s escaped heart. One was guarding the eastern salt pits. One was riding south with a mobile forge column.

And one was moving west.

Toward Grand Meridian.

The information hit him like ice water.

Austin Veyron released the command fragment. The tracker stumbled as her compass went dark.

”What did you see?” Veyra asked.

”Two fronts,” he said. ”She is sending a column toward the Freehold.”

The tracker heard him. She laughed through her damaged mask. ”The Matron does not need your city. She only needs the road it sits on.”

Austin Veyron looped the white root chain around her wrist and yanked the hooked weapon free. He could have devoured her core. The instinct was there, impatient and vicious.

Instead, he broke the chain and kicked it away.

”Tell Vordessa her recoverers failed.” He looked at her. ”Tell her the Ash Meridian knows.”

The tracker stared at him. ”You are letting me go?”

”I am giving you a choice. Run back. Run somewhere else. Do not touch these people again.”

The rest of the pack had already fallen back from the fire line. Their leader stood for a moment, then she began to climb the cliff slowly. No one followed.

The ravine went silent except for the frightened breathing of the refugees.

Nysara found Austin Veyron. ”The city needs warning.”

Elena’s relay token blinked at his belt. The distance was long, but not out of range. He opened the channel and fed the tracker’s stolen direction into a simple message: MOBILE FORGE COLUMN WESTBOUND. GRAND MERIDIAN IN DANGER. PREPARE ROUTES.

For a long moment, there was no answer.

Then Elena’s white script appeared.

MESSAGE RECEIVED. CITY WILL HOLD.

Austin Veyron read it twice.

They reached Cinder Hollow at dawn.

The settlement was hidden beneath a collapsed mining station, its entrances hidden by ash screens and old water pipes. Its wardens came out with crossbows raised until they saw the rescued prisoners, the injured, and the broken forge bands.

Lysenne spoke first.

”We need one night.” She gestured at the wider ravine. ”Then we decide the next route.”

The oldest warden stared toward the red sunrise over the hills. ”You brought the Ash War to our door.”

Austin Veyron did not deny it.

”I brought people who need shelter.” He gestured to the rescued refugees. ”The war was already moving.”

The warden’s eyes narrowed, but he lowered his crossbow.

Inside the hollow, a relay runner appeared from the west with ash on her coat and terror in her eyes.

”Grand Meridian sent word.” She threw an empty flask onto the floor. ”A forge column crossed the southern ridge. It will reach the city before noon tomorrow.”

The rescued people stared at Austin Veyron.

The Ash War had two fronts.
