The Scumbags Guide to Enslaving Demon's

The Bone Coast held its breath.

The Speaker’s shell hammer rose over the central platform. Court delegates filled the surrounding balconies, their banners shifting in the harbor wind. Below, bone ships waited at their piers, and the sealed envoy box creaked as workers prepared it for departure.

The crowd itself unsettled Austin Veyron more than any single banner. Every delegate wore a different sigil, and every sigil represented some claim already collected from someone who had never agreed to give it. They watched the platform the way people watched weather, not judgment but spectacle, something to be endured or profited from depending on which side of the auction a person happened to stand. No one here seemed to expect the outcome to be fair. They only wanted to see which unfairness would prevail.

”The first bid,” the Speaker announced, ”is a claim upon fearful ground.”

Vordessa stepped forward with her red shard floating above her hand.

”I offer proof of conquest,” she said. ”A heart fragment that has rooted roads across freeholds, markets, and forge territory. Grant me a sovereign claim over the Ash Meridian’s eastern corridor, and I will deliver the road to court recognition.”

Murmurs moved through the crowd.

Austin Veyron stayed beneath the whale-rib balcony with Veyra, Sable, Nyra, and Vessa. The red shard pulsed in answer to the fragment hidden under Nyra’s coat.

”Do not let it call you a key,” Sable said.

Nyra stepped out from cover before anyone could stop her.

The court quieted.

”I am not a key,” she called. ”The shard does not belong to the person who can use it. It does not belong to the person who can sell it. It belongs to no one.”

The Speaker’s shell mask turned toward her. ”Attuned witness. State your relation to the lot.”

”I refuse relation.”

A red ripple crossed the platform. Vordessa’s expression sharpened.

The Speaker lifted the hammer. ”Refusal is noted but does not invalidate a sovereign auction.”

Vessa moved into the open beside Nyra. ”It does if the lot’s value depends on involuntary attunement. Court procedure requires a consent challenge before the hammer falls.”

A dozen court delegates began speaking at once. Some objected. Others leaned forward, interested in the delay. The Speaker’s shell hammer paused in the air.

”Courier,” the Speaker said. ”You claim procedural standing?”

”I hold a Kharos permit and a market dispute seal,” Vessa replied. ”Your court recognizes both when it profits from them.”

The Speaker’s mask did not change. ”Very well. Consent challenge entered.”

Vordessa laughed softly. ”You think paperwork will save you?”

”No,” Veyra said, stepping into the auction circle. ”But it buys time.”

A court champion descended from the upper balcony.

The demon was enormous, wearing armor made from sea-black plates. A hooked trident rested in both hands. Its eyes were covered by a strip of pearl shell. It moved with the unhurried confidence of something that had never once lost a challenge, and the delegates leaned in as it dropped onto the platform, eager for the kind of spectacle the auction alone could not provide.

”Challenge requires a proof of force,” the Speaker announced. ”If the claimant’s opponents cannot defend their refusal, the court assumes the refusal is meaningless.”

Veyra drew her blade.

”Fine.”

The champion attacked.

Its trident struck the platform hard enough to crack bone-white stone. Veyra moved aside, using the broken auction rail to change the angle of the next thrust. She did not try to overpower the demon. She stayed close, cut at the gaps in the armor, and made every heavy swing cost it position.

Austin Veyron watched the Speaker’s hammer.

A pale authority claim ran through it, connecting the court’s recognition to the auction platform. It did not belong to the Speaker alone. It was an old mechanism: whoever held the hammer during the final bid could make the harbor accept a sovereign as real. Generations of claims had passed through that single object, each one legitimized not because it was true but because the hammer had fallen while no one strong enough objected.

DEVOUR wanted the whole thing.

He could consume the hammer’s authority and leave the court powerless. He could also collapse every legitimate harbor agreement held under it — trade charters, salvage rights, the quiet arrangements that let ordinary dock workers earn a living without ever touching a sovereign claim. The hunger did not care about the difference. It only cared about the size of what was in front of it.

”Target,” he said. ”Auction authority applied to an involuntary attunement. Not the Speaker, not the harbor’s other agreements.”

Sable and Nyra answered together.

”Witnessed.”

Austin Veyron crossed the platform while Veyra fought.

The Speaker swung the shell hammer toward him. It was not a physical attack. The air around it declared him a challenger without standing.

UNRECOGNIZED.

The word hit like a weight.

Austin Veyron felt every court eye turn him into an intruder, a trespasser, a thing the harbor could remove. He caught the hammer’s arc with the white root chain.

DEVOUR opened.

He found the narrow claim that said a person’s refusal had no weight unless the court allowed it.

UNRECOGNIZED.

He consumed the word.

The hammer rang.

The court delegates recoiled as the platform’s red claim lines flickered. Vordessa’s shard wavered above her hand.

At the outer pier, a horn sounded.

Rin’s voice came through the relay token. ”Envoy box is loaded. Orena found the ship seal. It is false.”

”Can you stop it?” Austin Veyron asked.

”Working on it.”

The court champion drove Veyra back toward the platform edge. Its trident cut a groove through the stone. Veyra caught the shaft under her arm, twisted, and used the champion’s own momentum to send it into a court banner pole.

The pole snapped.

A blue-jaw banner fell across the platform, its protection claim flaring around the champion. The court demon laughed behind the pearl strip.

”Harbor protects the winner,” it said.

Veyra’s expression stayed calm. ”You are not winning.”

She cut the trident’s chain link where the blue banner’s line had attached. The protection flare sputtered. Her blade struck the champion’s knee joint. The demon dropped.

Veyra put the sword edge against the pearl strip over its eyes.

”Yield.”

The champion growled.

”Yield,” the Speaker said.

The court demon released the trident.

The consent challenge had bought more than time. The court was watching now, and Vordessa’s offer no longer looked clean. Several delegates had already begun murmuring about withdrawing support, calculating whether a contested claim was worth the trouble of defending later.

Then the red shard slipped from her hand.

It flew toward the Speaker’s shell hammer.

Sable shouted a warning, but the shard struck the hammer head before anyone could reach it. Red metal spread across the shell surface. The Speaker’s arm jerked as forge light crawled up its robes.

Vordessa smiled.

”You wanted a recognized sovereign,” she said. ”Here is one.”

The Speaker tried to drop the hammer.

It would not let go.

Red lines burst from the platform into the harbor water. They ran beneath the piers, wrapped the bone ships, and climbed the banners around the square. Every court agreement in Ossuary Harbor began to glow with Vordessa’s forge color.

At the outer pier, Rin swore through the relay. ”The box is opening.”

Orena’s voice followed. ”It is not an envoy box. It is a root seed.”

The black ship’s deck split as red roots burst through the cargo boards. Dock workers scattered, but the root seed sent thin lines after them, trying to turn the first panic into a harbor claim. Rin cut the nearest line with an arrowhead etched in salt. Orena drove her spear into the seed casing, forcing it to expose its central knot instead of spreading through the pier.

”Delay only,” Orena said through the relay. ”We need the court lines broken before this thing can be sealed.”

The harbor shook.

Vessa looked at the red lines spreading across the court square. ”She is not bidding for the corridor anymore. She is rooting a claim into the harbor.”

Nyra pulled the neutralized heart shard free from her coat. Its blue-black light answered Vordessa’s red fragment.

”What do we do?” she asked.

Austin Veyron looked at the Speaker trapped behind the forge-covered hammer, at the red lines reaching for every ship, and at the pier where the false envoy box was breaking open. Every plan he could reach for in that moment wanted to be simple: burn the hammer, devour the Speaker’s claim, take the whole court’s authority into himself so no one else could ever weaponize it again. It would have solved the immediate danger. It would also have made him exactly the kind of sovereign Vordessa had been arguing he could become since the glass crater.

”We stop the roots before the harbor accepts them,” he said.

Vordessa’s laugh carried over the water, confident and unhurried, as though the chaos she had just unleashed were merely the opening move of a longer game she had already won.

The sovereign auction was over.

The harbor war had begun.
