The Scumbags Guide to Enslaving Demon's

THIS WAY, it read.

The invitation lay on the floor of the ruined auction hall, white letters on black paper. Beyond the open door was no corridor, only darkness so deep it seemed to drink the market lights around it.

Vessa did not move.

”The proprietor does not invite people,” she said. ”People wake up with invitations and spend years trying to remember why they accepted.”

Tala held the returned night close to her chest. She looked steadier now, but the memory had left her raw. ”Can we refuse?”

”We can,” Vessa replied. ”The departure debt will remain. And Kharos will decide when it collects.”

Nyra looked at the neutralized heart shard in her hands. ”Or we go in and it offers us a cleaner trap.”

Austin Veyron studied the dark door. The market had already tried to buy a future command from him. It had tried to turn rescue into a debt and silence into agreement. Whatever stood behind that door would not make an offer unless it believed it could profit from the answer.

”We enter together,” he said.

Veyra’s gaze moved to him. ”No private bargains.”

”No private bargains.”

Sable held up the broken crown shard. ”Witnessed.”

They crossed the threshold.

The darkness became a vast room of black water and hanging scales. At a glass desk waited an adult woman in a black coat, her face changing whenever anyone looked away.

”Welcome,” the proprietor said. ”You have been expensive guests.”

Vessa’s voice was thin. ”We did not ask to be guests.”

”No one asks for the first market.” The proprietor’s eyes moved to the heart shard in Nyra’s hands. ”You have interfered with an auction, voided a master ledger, and returned property to a debtor. Remarkable.”

”People are not property,” Nyra said.

The proprietor smiled slightly. ”That sentence has cost more than kingdoms.”

Austin Veyron stepped forward. ”You changed our departure debt. What do you want?”

The proprietor opened her ledger. A page appeared overhead.

DEPARTURE DEBT: FORGIVEN.

CONSIDERATION: CROWNFORGE HEART SHARD AND ONE UNSPECIFIED FUTURE FAVOR.

”No,” Veyra said.

”Undisclosed favors gain value from uncertainty,” the proprietor explained.

Sable laughed bitterly. ”You sell crowns with better handwriting.”

The proprietor’s face became Sable’s for a heartbeat, wearing a flawless black crown.

”You know the burden of command,” the proprietor said in Sable’s voice. ”You know how much easier it is to let someone else decide.”

Sable did not look away. ”That is why I know what you are.”

The scales above them shifted.

On one, Austin Veyron saw Grand Meridian’s south gate. On another, Cinder Hollow’s water route. On another, Nyra’s sister standing in rain. The proprietor had collected symbols of every choice that mattered to them.

”If you refuse,” she said, ”Kharos may collect your departure price at an inconvenient moment. One night of your future. Perhaps a night when a city needs you. Perhaps a night when an ally is alone. I do not choose the debt’s timing. The market does.”

The hunger inside Austin Veyron rose.

He could feel the claim in the room, woven through the scales and the black water. DEVOUR wanted to consume it. The thought was dangerous. The proprietor was not a contract construct. She was the source of a system that had existed longer than the market halls around them.

”Target?” Veyra asked quietly.

Austin Veyron shook his head. ”Not yet.”

The proprietor’s smile sharpened. ”Good. You are learning restraint. That makes you more valuable.”

Tala stepped forward. ”You took my night.”

”I indexed it,” the proprietor replied.

”You built the place where theft becomes payment.”

The scales lowered a page between them.

OFFER: RESTORE ALL STOLEN NIGHTS.

PRICE: ONE WILLING WITNESS.

Austin Veyron saw the trap immediately. The witness would be responsible for every debt the market erased.

”No,” he said. ”That is not a witness. It is a collar.”

The room darkened.

Living prices climbed from the black water. They had no faces, only shifting symbols: a city gate, a chain, a child’s toy, an empty bed. They moved toward the group with hands made from paper contracts.

”Refusal noted,” the proprietor said.

Veyra stepped in front of Austin Veyron. ”We have heard worse.”

Living prices struck. Veyra and Rin cut them down while Sable erased their words. The scales tried to pull Nyra’s resonance free, but she raised the shard and pushed blue-black light across the water.

”I am not a key,” Nyra said.

A paper hand brushed Vessa’s face, stirring a rain-soaked memory. ”The market took a night from me too,” she said, drawing her courier blade. ”I want it to remember I survived.”

The group formed a tight line.

”Roles,” Austin Veyron called.

”Shield,” Veyra said.

”Witness,” Sable said.

”Scout,” Rin said.

”Courier,” Vessa said.

”Attuned,” Nyra said.

”Returned,” Tala said.

Austin Veyron looked at the scales and the proprietor behind them.

”Choice.”

The room shook.

The proprietor lifted one hand. The black water rose into a wall, carrying the departure debt claim toward them.

ONE NIGHT OF YOUR FUTURE.

The claim did not strike like a weapon. It showed them empty moments ahead: Veyra waking after a battle with no memory of who had saved her, Rin missing a crucial trail, Sable standing alone before a crown, Austin Veyron returning to Grand Meridian after something terrible had already happened.

The market wanted them to panic and accept the clean offer.

Austin Veyron felt the clause’s core in the rising water. This time he named it.

”Departure debt claim. I am not consuming time, futures, or anyone’s memories. I am consuming the market’s right to choose the night.”

Veyra held his gaze. ”Witnessed.”

Sable raised the crown shard. ”Witnessed.”

Austin Veyron stepped into the wave.

DEVOUR opened. The claim tasted like a locked clock, cold metal, and the fear of missing something that had not happened. It resisted him by showing every possible future loss. The hunger inside him wanted to take the whole future network, tear every potential night out of Kharos before the market could use it.

He did not.

He found the narrow sentence inside the debt.

MARKET CHOOSES TIME OF COLLECTION.

He consumed it.

The black wave fell. The scales above them cracked, but they did not shatter. The proprietor’s face finally stopped changing. It became a woman’s face again, pale and still.

”You have made your debt uncertain,” she said.

”No,” Austin Veyron replied. ”We made it ours to decide.”

The living prices dissolved into blank paper floating on the water.

The proprietor closed her ledger.

”You cannot destroy me here. Kharos is not a person. It is a need with a marketplace built around it.”

”We are not trying to destroy Kharos,” Vessa said. ”We are trying to leave without becoming your inventory.”

The proprietor looked at the neutralized heart shard. ”Vordessa is not finished with it. She has fled to the Bone Coast. An abyssal court there sells sovereign claims the way Kharos sells names. She will trade the shard for a claim large enough to rule a territory.”

”Why tell us?” Nyra asked.

”Because Vordessa wants to own markets. I prefer markets that remain larger than their sellers.”

A silence followed that answer, the kind that came from realizing an enemy’s enemy was still not a friend. Tala looked down at the vial-shaped memory still warm against her chest and asked, low enough that it was almost to herself, whether the proprietor ever gave anything away without meaning to profit from it twice.

”Rarely,” the proprietor said, hearing her anyway. ”But information about Vordessa costs me nothing. She is a competitor, not a customer. I have no interest in seeing her build a second Kharos on the Bone Coast, and every interest in watching you slow her down first.”

Vessa’s jaw tightened. ”So we are a tool.”

”Everyone who enters is a tool to something,” the proprietor said, without cruelty, as though stating the weather. ”The difference is whether you know it while you are being used.”

Austin Veyron said nothing to that. It was close enough to true that arguing with it felt like another trade he did not want to make.

The darkness behind the desk opened into a narrow passage lined with blue lamps.

”Conditional exit,” the proprietor said. ”Follow the blue lamps. Your departure debt remains, but the market will not collect it until the next moon. Consider that a courtesy.”

”Courtesy has a price,” Veyra said.

”Everything does.”

Austin Veyron looked at the passage, then at his allies. The group was still whole. No one had signed a future favor. No one had been traded for a clean escape.

”That is enough for now,” he said.

They backed toward the blue lamps without turning their backs on the proprietor. Sable kept the crown shard raised the entire way, and Rin walked last, arrow nocked but not drawn, watching the black water for any last shape that might rise from it. Nothing did. The proprietor simply watched them go, her ledger closed, her face already beginning to blur back into something none of them could quite hold in memory.

At the threshold, Vessa paused. ”My stolen night,” she said.

The proprietor’s eyes held hers. ”The Clock Court will release it if you return before the next moon.”

Vessa nodded once and stepped into the passage. Nyra followed close behind her, one hand still curled protectively around the dulled heart shard, and Tala came last of all, glancing back only once at the water before she let the dark close over it.

Behind them, the dark room folded closed.

Ahead lay a route out of Kharos.

And beyond that route, the Bone Coast waited.
