The Scumbags Guide to Enslaving Demon's

The next road was waiting.

At dawn, Ossuary Harbor looked less like a court seat and more like a wounded city. The bone ships still rocked at their piers, but the red glow had vanished from the banners. Dockworkers repaired shattered boards around the contained root seed, and court delegates met in public circles rather than behind masks.

The Court’s Speaker stood beside the bone map with its broken hammer wrapped in white cloth. ”The Black Maw is not court territory,” it said. ”It is older than the courts. The map shows a frontier gate beyond the Bone Coast, but the road changes according to what travelers hunger for.” Austin Veyron studied the clawed symbol at the far end of the map. ”Meaning it will react to me,” he said. ”It will react to all of you,” Sable answered. ”But yes. DEVOUR will look like an invitation to it.”

The freed clerk from the cathedral stood near Nyra. The silver script was gone from their arms, leaving pale scars. ”I am Ceryn,” they said. ”I kept court records before Vordessa used me as a witness. I know the harbor routes and the old treaties. I want to help, if that is my choice to make.” ”It is,” Austin Veyron told them. ”What role do you want?” ”Record keeper,” Ceryn said. ”Witness. Whatever keeps the court from forgetting what happened.” The Speaker lowered its head. ”That is needed,” it said.

Sable studied Ceryn for a moment, the way she studied anyone who had walked out of a coercive claim still willing to trust their own judgment. ”You do not have to prove anything to us,” she said. ”I know,” Ceryn answered. ”I am not doing it for you. I am doing it so the next clerk the court binds has a record to point to.”

Orena leaned against a pier post, sea-green horns catching the morning light. ”I can guide you to the frontier gate,” she said. ”Past that, the Black Maw is not my coast. I will not promise more than I know.” ”Then promise only the coast,” Veyra said. Orena nodded. ”I choose that,” she said.

Nyra held the neutralized heart shard in both hands. ”I need to be clear too,” she said. ”I am not coming because the shard pulls me. I am coming because Vordessa keeps using people like me as tools.” Sable looked at her. ”That is clear,” she said.

Austin Veyron opened the relay token. A weak white line connected them to Grand Meridian, where Marcus, Elena, Nysara, and the wider alliance were holding the home routes.

Before they left the harbor, Austin Veyron asked Veyra and Sable to meet him beside the map. ”The Black Maw changes paths through hunger,” he said. ”The old pact is not enough.” Veyra folded her arms. ”What do you need?” she asked. ”If I feel DEVOUR making a route decision, I say it,” Austin Veyron said. ”If I do not say it, either of you can stop me. We do not follow a path simply because it promises power.” Sable placed the broken crown shard between them on the map. ”And if the path forces a choice?” she asked. ”Then we name the options out loud,” Austin Veyron said. ”No hunger deciding in silence.” Veyra considered, then nodded. ”Voluntary. Revisable. No secret exceptions,” she said. ”Agreed,” Austin Veyron answered.

The harbor warning bell rang.

A black shape climbed from the sea beside the eastern pier. It was not a demon in any familiar sense. The creature had too many joints, a body made from wet shadow, and a round mouth filled with pale teeth. Black mist trailed from its shoulders, and as it pulled itself onto the dock, every route mark in the harbor guttered.

”Black Maw scout,” Orena said. ”Do not let it mark you.”

The creature opened its mouth. A thread of dark saliva struck the pier near Austin Veyron’s boots. The wood blackened, and a shape like a compass rose spread across the boards.

HUNGER FINDS HUNGER.

The scout lunged. Veyra met it with her blade. Metal passed through its shadow body, but the edge came away coated in black salt. Rin’s arrow struck its teeth, scattering pale fragments. The creature twisted around the pier posts and reached for Nyra’s heart shard.

Nyra stepped back. Blue-black light flared from the shard, holding the scout at arm’s length. ”It is following the fragment,” she said. ”It is following both,” Austin Veyron replied.

The scout’s mouth widened. The dark compass mark on the dock stretched toward his shadow. DEVOUR answered with a savage pull. The creature’s hunger was raw and ancient. Consuming it would be easy. It would also give the Black Maw a direct line into him.

”Target?” Veyra called. Austin Veyron stared at the spreading mark. ”Route-marking instinct,” he said. ”Not its hunger. Not its body.” ”Witnessed,” Veyra said. ”Witnessed,” Sable added.

Austin Veyron pressed the white root chain into the black compass shape. DEVOUR opened. The scout’s route sense hit him like freezing water. It carried no memories, no words, only the certainty that every appetite could be traced to a source. It wanted to follow him inward. Austin Veyron found the narrow function that made the creature mark a trail.

FIND.

He consumed it. The compass mark vanished. The scout recoiled, its many joints folding in on themselves as though it had forgotten what direction meant. Orena drove her spear through the creature’s central shadow, and Rin’s next arrow struck the pale teeth at its core. The body collapsed into a wet black husk.

Ceryn crouched beside it with a record cloth. ”It is not fully sentient,” they said. ”It is a map husk. Something made it to search.” Sable examined the black salt left on Veyra’s blade. ”It came from beyond the frontier gate,” she said.

Ceryn pulled a small bone needle from the husk. A thin line of red light rose from it, pointing out across the sea. ”Vordessa has already passed the gate,” the record keeper said.

The harbor fell quiet. Even the dockworkers repairing the pier boards paused their hammers, as though the news carried its own weight and did not need anyone to announce it twice.

The Speaker looked at the line, then toward a small neutral court vessel at the far pier. Its sails were blank, free of house marks. Several court volunteers were loading water, rope, and tide wards onto its deck. ”The court cannot send an army,” the Speaker said. ”But it can provide a vessel under no sovereign banner.”

Austin Veyron looked at the group: Veyra, Rin, Sable, Nyra, Vessa, Orena, Ceryn, and himself. They were not an army. They were enough to begin. ”Anyone who stays does so freely,” he said. ”Anyone who comes knows the Black Maw may try to make hunger look like destiny.”

No one stepped back.

Ceryn laid a fresh record sheet on the pier. One by one, the travelers wrote only the roles they carried into the fog: shield, scout, witness, attuned, courier, guide, record keeper, choice. The sheet did not bind them. It recorded the fact that each had boarded with open eyes.

Vessa watched the words dry. ”Kharos would charge extra for a record like this,” she said. ”Then it is lucky we are not in Kharos,” Rin said.

Nyra tied the heart shard inside a cloth pouch at her belt. ”If the Black Maw tries to make me a key,” she said, ”remind me I am not.” ”We will,” Sable said. ”And if it tries to make Austin Veyron a mouth?” Veyra asked. Austin Veyron met her gaze. ”You stop me,” he said. ”Gladly,” Veyra answered.

It was not the first time she had said it, and he suspected it would not be the last, but there was no weariness in her voice when she did. She said it the way a person confirms a door is locked before leaving for the night — not because she expected trouble, but because checking cost nothing and the alternative cost everything.

They spent the last hour before boarding stocking the vessel with what the harbor could spare: dried fish, sealed water casks, tide wards stitched from court-blessed rope. Ceryn catalogued every item on a fresh sheet, muttering that a record kept honestly was worth more than a blessing kept quietly. Orena checked the hull twice, running a hand along seams that had clearly failed other ships before this one, and said nothing about what she found there, only that it would hold long enough to matter.

They boarded the neutral vessel before midday. Grand Meridian’s final relay message arrived as the ropes were cut.

CITY STABLE. MARKET DEBT QUIET. RETURN ROUTE OPEN.

Austin Veyron sent one answer.

WE WILL.

The ship moved beyond the harbor’s bone pylons. The Bone Coast dwindled behind them. Ahead, black fog covered the sea in a wall so dense it swallowed the horizon, and at its center, a gate of pale teeth rose from the water.

The teeth opened.

No one on deck spoke as the gate widened. The fog beyond it did not move like ordinary weather, and the ship’s small crew of court volunteers kept their eyes fixed on their ropes rather than the darkness ahead, as though looking too long might count as an invitation of its own.

The Black Maw waited beyond.
