The Scumbags Guide to Enslaving Demon's

They moved east before the contained seed could pulse again.

The walls of Grand Meridian became a dark shape behind them by dusk. The road to the east ran downhill through dry hills and onto a basin of white salt under a pale sky. Heat still wavered over the ground at that hour.

Lysenne stopped at a stone marker in the salt.

”Do not drink any water offered inside the pits,” she said. ”The Matron’s traders use them to make agreements.”

Eshra adjusted the water filters on her pack. ”Water contracts?”

”Every caravan carries water,” Zareth said. His wrists were still bound in white root chain, Kesra holding the free end of it. ”Vordessa knows a full stomach can make people sign anything.”

Kesra tugged on the chain sharply. ”Do not look impressed.”

”I look informed.”

Austin Veyron stared at the line of white salt ahead of them. Beneath it, he could sense the buried road moving east in a thin red pulse. The command well at the pit site was feeding it, just like the contained seed under Grand Meridian had been fed from the other end.

Veyra walked beside him.

”You are quiet.”

”I am listening.”

”To the road?”

”To myself.”

She shot him a sideways look. ”That is usually the dangerous part.”

Salt basin opened around them after midnight. Platforms on stilts sat over shallow pools of mineral water. Lanterns dangled from chains above the water, flames red instead of gold. A small caravan was stopped near the central well: three wagons, six adults in travel cloaks, and two armed guards frowning nervously toward the salt ridges.

A woman with braided dark hair stepped forward from the wagons. A curved blade dangled at her hip, but her stance was more protective than threatening.

”Road is closed,” she called. ”Forge raiders have been hitting every route since sundown.”

Neria, Austin Veyron guessed. The caravan leader’s name had turned up in old Freehold trade lists.

”We are not raiders,” he said.

”Everyone says that before they ask for water.”

”Then do not give us water.”

The woman’s eyes narrowed. ”That is new.”

Before Austin Veyron could speak again, red shapes appeared from the salt pools.

Salt-forged raiders rose out of the white crust like corpses waking from graves. They wore layered mineral armor and red metal masks. Their weapons were hooked poles designed to drag people toward the central well.

”Behind the wagons!” Neria shouted.

The caravan guards tried to form a line, but one raider flung a salt chain around a wagon wheel. The chain tightened, pulling the wagon toward the glowing water.

Maelis sent embers beneath the wheel, melting a path through the salt crust. Sarielle turned the red splash from the well into harmless steam. Rin’s arrows took two raiders through their mask seams before they reached the travelers.

Zareth moved without waiting for permission. He used the white root chain around his wrists to catch a hooked pole, then twisted the weapon away from a raider’s hands.

Kesra kept the chain tight, but she did not stop him.

”Left flank,” he said. ”They are driving them toward the well!”

Austin Veyron saw it too. The raiders did not need to kill anyone. They needed a desperate person to drink the marked water. One agreement would give the well a route into the caravan’s ledgers and memories.

One of Neria’s guards slipped on the salt and fell near the pool. A raider dragged the man by the ankle. He reached toward the water in blind panic.

Austin Veyron threw the white root chain around the raider’s chest and yanked. Veyra took the opening, cutting the hooked pole in half. Neria pulled her guard back from the pool.

”Do not drink!” she shouted.

The raiders turned toward Austin Veyron together.

Their masks opened.

SAFE PASSAGE. CLEAN WATER. ONE SMALL MARK.

The offer hid a command beneath it. Austin Veyron felt it immediately, bright and tempting. The well could show him every trade route through the salt basin. It could tell him where Vordessa’s caravans were moving, which settlements had already been bound, and how the road reached the southern slag fields.

All he had to do was consume the core of the command well.

The hunger urged him to take it.

Austin Veyron spoke before moving.

”Command well. I want the route intelligence, but I will take no more than its path memory.”

Veyra’s blade flashed as she cut down another raider. ”Witnessed.”

Sable raised her broken crown shard. ”Witnessed.”

Austin Veyron ran for the well.

The water was not water. It was liquid salt lit from within by red script. Raiders threw themselves between him and the basin. Kesra and Zareth broke the first pair apart, fighting back to back despite the chain between them. Taryn used her spear to pin a third raider’s foot. Eshra rushed past with a set of forge tools.

”The intake valves are underneath!” she called. ”If I close them, the well stops pulling!”

”Can you reach them?” Austin Veyron asked.

”Can you keep the salt from swallowing me?”

”Probably.”

”Not reassuring.”

He grinned despite himself. ”Go.”

Eshra crawled under the stilt platform. Maelis followed, sending small flames into the mineral crust to keep it from hardening around her legs. Above, Austin Veyron placed both hands on the well rim.

DEVOUR opened.

The command struck him with a rush of maps.

Salt roads. Hidden wells. Caravan contracts. Red markers beneath old trade stones. He saw a long line leading south toward a field of black slag where a deeper forge site pulsed under the ground.

He stopped at the path memory.

The well tried to offer more.

TAKE THE TRADERS. TAKE THEIR THIRST. MAKE THEM YOUR ROUTE.

Austin Veyron pulled away.

The hunger snarled inside him, furious at the refusal.

Eshra slammed a valve shut beneath the platform.

The well’s red glow faltered.

Neria saw the change and shouted to the caravan. ”Move the wagons north! Do not wait for us!”

Her people obeyed—not because the command had taken them, but because they trusted her warning.

The raiders began to collapse as their well lost pressure. Their salt armor cracked. Red metal skeletons showed beneath. One reached for Austin Veyron’s ankle with shaking fingers.

”Matron gives purpose,” it hissed.

Austin Veyron looked at the creature’s cracked mask. ”She gives tasks. That is not the same thing.”

He kicked the hooked pole away and let the raider fall back into the dry salt.

The command well began to split.

Zareth stared at the opening seam. ”There is a seed line beneath it. If it survives, the buried road stays fed.”

Sable stepped close. ”Then we seal it, not swallow it.”

Neria approached with her blade lowered. ”What are you doing to my well?”

”Removing the part that turns water into a contract,” Austin Veyron said.

The caravan leader looked at the red light, the broken raiders, and the people working under the platform.

”That well has kept this route alive for ten years.”

”It has also been collecting your routes for Vordessa.”

She understood faster than he expected. ”Then tell me what you need.”

”We need witnesses,” Sable said. ”People who know this road and choose to close the old terms.”

Neria turned to her caravan crew. ”You heard her. This is your choice.”

One by one, the adults stepped forward.

They did not offer their names. They offered the present truth: caravan leader, guard, driver, trader, traveler. The white relay token carried each role into the sealing pattern. Eshra closed the final valve. Sable pressed the crown shard into the salt seam.

Austin Veyron took the last command phrase from the water.

OWED.

The word melted away.

The well went dark.

For a moment, the salt basin held only wind and the creak of wagons.

Then a red line lit on the horizon to the south.

It ran across the white flats, over the black hills and toward the slag fields where the next forge site waited.

Vordessa’s voice traveled through the dead well.

”You call consent freedom because you have never led people who could not afford to choose,” she said. ”War will teach you the price of hesitation.”

The voice faded.

Neria sheathed her blade. ”The southern road is worse than anything in these pits. If you are heading there, you need guides who know the wells.”

”You do not owe us for this,” Austin Veyron said.

”I know.” She looked at her caravan, then toward the red line. ”I choose to help anyway.”

The salt road behind them went dark.

The slag fields ahead began to glow.
