The Scumbags Guide to Enslaving Demon's

For now.

The core chamber shook around the silence of the third bell. Hundreds of freed demons stood in the red-lit water, no longer bound to the Maw Regent’s command but still carrying the hunger it had cultivated inside them.

Some cried. Some clutched their heads. Some stared at the food stores along the walls with the desperate focus of people who’d been taught that eating required permission.

Kessa stepped into the center of the chamber.

”Water first,” she said. ”Anyone who can walk helps someone who cannot. No one takes more than they need until everyone has something.”

She didn’t sound like a sovereign. She sounded like someone who’d been hungry and remembered what mattered.

Selka joined her. ”North gallery has supplies,” she said. ”The maintenance tunnel is clear for now. Fighters, escort groups. Healers, check the people with red muzzle burns.”

The freed demons began moving.

Not perfectly. Not all at once. But they moved, because the instructions described work they could choose, not identities they had to become.

Veyra watched them, then looked at Austin Veyron. ”Breaking the chain creates responsibility,” she said. ”It does not make them yours.”

”I know.”

”Do you?”

Austin Veyron almost answered too fast. The chamber was full of hunger, and DEVOUR felt every one of them like a needle against his nerves. It could feel their need for food, their fear, their confusion, all of it pressing in at once. A part of him wanted to reach out and make the movement orderly, efficient and safe.

He kept his hands open.

”I am trying to,” he said.

Nyra stood at the edge of the red pool, heart shard held in both hands. Blue-black light pulsed unevenly through her throat markings, flickering like something struggling to hold its shape.

”The Regent did not leave because it failed,” she said. ”It went below to the Maw Core.”

Ceryn looked up from the record sheet. ”What is that?” the record keeper asked.

”The oldest hunger in this reef. Not a creature. A source. The Regent feeds it and uses its pulse to shape everything above.”

Sable’s expression tightened. ”If Vordessa adds her shard to that source, the third bell will not need muzzles. It will make hunger itself feel like an order.”

A scream cut across the chamber.

One of the freed fighters had fallen beside a food crate. His black muzzle was gone, but red residue still crawled across his jaw. He grabbed another adult demon by the throat, trying to pull a ration bag away by force.

”Mine,” he snarled. ”Mine or I die.”

The word spread through the chamber like something contagious.

Other red residues lit up, one after another.

The frenzy command had been left behind, still active, still hungry.

Veyra moved first, but three more former captives surged between her and the fighter. She didn’t cut them. She turned her blade flat and knocked them away from each other without drawing blood, clearing space instead of enemies.

Kessa shouted from the water line. ”Food is coming! No one is being left without it!”

The words helped some. They didn’t reach everyone.

Austin Veyron saw the red residue connecting the frenzy cases. Not hunger itself. A final feeder command embedded beneath the broken bind phrase, still humming with purpose.

HUNGER MEANS TAKE.

DEVOUR wanted it badly. The command was small enough to consume cleanly. He could remove it before it turned the chamber into a slaughterhouse.

He still said the target out loud, forcing the discipline of it.

”Frenzy claim only,” he said. ”Not hunger. Not fear. Not any person here.”

Veyra held the struggling fighter at bay with the flat of her blade.

”Witnessed,” she said.

Sable stepped beside Austin Veyron. ”Witnessed.”

Austin Veyron pressed the white root chain into the red water.

DEVOUR opened.

The frenzy claim tasted like empty bowls and clenched teeth.

HUNGER MEANS TAKE.

He consumed it, and nothing else.

The red residue lifted from the freed demons in a thin smoke, drifting up and away. The fighter released the ration bag and stared down at his own hands like he didn’t recognize them.

”I was going to hurt him,” he whispered.

”You stopped,” Kessa said.

The fighter sank to the floor. A healer from the freed group knelt beside him with water, unhurried, steady.

The chamber exhaled.

Ceryn climbed onto a broken coral block and read the escape routes aloud, voice carrying over the water. North tunnel to the settlement lanes. East shelf to the dock sheds. West passage only for people who could swim the tide channel. The freed demons chose in small groups, checking on one another before moving, no one left to decide alone.

Kessa assigned no ranks. She asked who knew healing, who knew the dock gates, who could carry injured people. Answers came up from the crowd freely. A horned medic took two helpers. The former fighter who’d dropped the ration bag chose to carry water instead of a weapon. Selka handed the sleeping feeding hound to a pair of workers who said they could lead it safely through the upper galleries.

Austin Veyron watched the ad hoc order take shape. It was slower than a command. It was also real, in a way commands never quite managed to be. No one waited to be told which direction to move. No one froze, hoping someone else would decide for them. They argued, adjusted, corrected each other, and kept going anyway, which was its own kind of proof.

Above them, the Hunger Reef groaned. The Maw Regent’s descent had weakened the core supports. Black coral broke loose from the ceiling and crashed into the red pool, sending up sheets of spray.

Orena pointed toward a newly opened fissure beneath the throne platform.

”That is a deep route,” she said. ”The current is pulling down.”

Nyra looked into the darkness. ”The Maw Core is below,” she said.

Ceryn wrote quickly, pen scratching fast against the bone paper. ”The surface escape is still open. The freed people can move through the north gallery. But if the third bell starts, they may not get far enough.”

Kessa came over, soaked to the knees and breathing hard. ”We can handle the evacuation,” she said. ”Selka knows the tunnels. I will not promise everyone will be safe, but we will choose the routes and keep moving.”

Austin Veyron looked at the hundreds of people who had been turned into an army. He wanted to stay. He wanted to make sure no one was lost in the maintenance tunnels. He wanted the impossible certainty that every single person would reach the settlement lanes alive, whatever it cost him to guarantee it.

Veyra read the hesitation on his face immediately.

”You cannot become the rope that holds every person up,” she said. ”They have each other. We have the source.”

Kessa met Austin Veyron’s eyes. ”Go stop the thing that made us hungry for someone else’s purpose,” she said.

The words weren’t permission. They were a decision made by someone who had every right to make it herself.

Austin Veyron nodded.

He looked once more at the chamber before he turned toward the fissure — at Kessa directing traffic with her sleeves still soaked to the elbow, at the fighter who’d nearly killed someone now carrying water buckets instead, at the whole ragged, unglamorous machinery of people choosing to take care of each other without being told how. It wasn’t clean. It wasn’t fast. It was, he thought, probably the only version of safety that meant anything.

The third bell pulsed.

It didn’t ring aloud. It beat under the reef like a second heart, steady and patient.

Every black coral tube in the chamber lit from below, all at once.

Nyra’s shard flared blue-black in answer. She almost dropped it from the force of it.

”It started,” she said. ”Vordessa is feeding the Maw Core.”

Selka gathered the freed fighters near the north tunnel, quick and efficient. Ceryn gave Kessa the updated route record. Orena tested the edge of the fissure with her spear, watching the black water churn below.

”The current is strong,” she said. ”Once we jump, there is no climbing back.”

Sable held the broken crown shard over the darkness, solemn. ”No promises to the deep,” she said. ”No names into the water.”

Rin drew two salt arrows and tucked them between her fingers, already braced.

Veyra looked at Austin Veyron. ”Role?” she asked.

He listened to DEVOUR screaming toward the Maw Core, a pull he could feel in his teeth. It wanted the ancient source. It wanted every hungry thing under the reef to know his name.

”Choice,” he said.

The team jumped.

Behind them, the freed survivors moved north toward the maintenance tunnels, unhurried but unstoppable.

Below, the dark current pulled Austin Veyron toward the second hunger waiting under the reef, cold water closing over his head, the reef’s dying light narrowing to a single red thread far beneath him.
