The Scumbags Guide to Enslaving Demon's

The high tide entered the chamber.

Black water surged across the bone floor, lifting shards of reef stone and broken oath bells. Austin Veyron hit the open cathedral door hard enough to lose his breath. Veyra caught the frame beside him. Sable went under for a moment, then surfaced with the broken crown shard still clenched in one hand.

At the far end, Vordessa stood untouched on the raised throne platform.

The adult court clerk remained bound in the shell frame, arms covered in silver script. Red lines ran from the clerk to the floating shard, then from the shard into the throne’s crown-like arch. The chamber’s flooding water carried those lines outward, turning every wave into a possible oath.

”High tide confirms the claim,” Vordessa called. ”The cathedral recognizes a sovereign who can make the water obey.”

The Court’s Speaker forced itself upright beside Austin Veyron. Its shell mask was cracked, and its ruined hand bled pale seawater.

”The court does not recognize her,” it said.

Vordessa smiled. ”You said that above. Then your harbor listened to my hammer anyway.”

The Speaker looked at the clerk. ”I revoke all court recognition obtained through coercion.”

Its voice carried through the chamber.

The red lines flickered.

Vordessa’s expression sharpened. ”You cannot revoke what fear has already accepted.”

The flood rose to Austin Veyron’s waist.

Reef-bone guardians climbed from the water around the throne, each carrying a spear made from a rib and a strip of written shell. Orena moved along the left wall, using the tide channels like footholds.

”I can open the lower drain,” she called. ”But someone has to hold the guardians off.”

”Rin, cover her,” Veyra said.

Rin’s arrows struck the first guardian’s shell strip. The words on it flared red. The creature kept moving, spear aimed at Orena’s back.

Austin Veyron caught the spear shaft with the white root chain. The guardian pulled him deeper into the water. DEVOUR flared, offering the simple answer: consume the whole oath-keeper, take its strength, clear the path.

”Target?” Veyra called.

Austin Veyron gritted his teeth. ”Guardian command. Only the claim it is enforcing.”

”Witnessed.”

”Witnessed,” Sable said.

He opened DEVOUR through the chain.

The guardian’s oath tasted like salt and submission.

PROTECT THE SOVEREIGN.

Austin Veyron consumed the coercion in the phrase.

The guardian went still. Its spear dropped. The other reef-bone figures hesitated as their shared command stumbled.

Veyra used the opening to cut through two more shell strips. Rin’s arrows broke the masks of the others. Orena reached the lower drain and forced her spear into a wheel buried under the water.

The wheel did not turn.

”It is sealed by a vow!” she shouted.

Nyra stood in the center of the flooded chamber, heart shard raised. Blue-black light rippled across the water toward Vordessa’s red fragment.

”It is using the cathedral’s oath reservoir,” she said. ”If I separate the shards, I can weaken the throne. But the clerk is still part of the circuit.”

The bound clerk lifted their head. ”Tell me what to do.”

Vordessa pulled the red lines tighter.

”Say you accept,” she commanded. ”Say the court needs a ruler. Say the tide must have one hand.”

The clerk’s face twisted in pain, but their eyes remained clear.

”I refuse,” they said.

The shell frame cracked.

For the first time, Vordessa looked uncertain.

Sable waded forward, crown shard held high. ”Refusal is not noise. It is the part of a person you cannot turn into proof.”

She drove the shard into the water between the clerk and the throne.

White light cut through the red lines.

Nyra cried out as both heart fragments answered. Blue-black power rose around her, pushing against the forge red. The two shards began to pull apart across the chamber, each trying to claim the other’s resonance.

Austin Veyron saw the central claim at last.

It was not in Vordessa’s shard. It was not in the throne. It ran through the flooded water itself, an old abyssal promise that a territory needed a single recognized will.

DEVOUR wanted it desperately.

Consume the claim, and he could hold the whole Bone Coast command network in his body. He could make the tide obey. He could protect Grand Meridian from every court that might ever sail inland.

He could become exactly what Vordessa had offered him.

The red water rose around him, forming the shape of a crown above his head.

”Take it,” Vordessa said. ”You understand now. People do not want freedom when waves are rising. They want someone who can promise the water will stop.”

Austin Veyron thought of the Freehold’s white routes. Of people carrying water, holding gates, choosing roles without waiting for him. He thought of the storm road, where he had left an old grief alone instead of devouring it simply because he could. Every crown he had broken since the glass crater had offered the same trade in a different shape — safety in exchange for one person’s word replacing everyone else’s choice — and every time, the safety had turned out to be a story told by whoever wore the crown, not a thing the people underneath it had actually been given.

”Target,” he said.

Veyra stood at his right. Sable stood at his left. Both were soaked, bloodied, and still present.

”The single-will claim. Not the tide. Not the territory. Not the court.”

”Witnessed,” Veyra said.

”Witnessed,” Sable answered.

Austin Veyron stepped under the crown of red water.

DEVOUR opened.

The claim struck him with every fear a coastline had ever known: storms, raiders, hunger, drowned children, ships vanishing beyond the horizon. It offered one answer to all of it.

ONE WILL MUST RULE.

The hunger inside him begged for more. It wanted the court’s history, the tide’s force, Vordessa’s shard, the entire cathedral.

Austin Veyron took only the claim.

He consumed one will must rule.

The red crown broke.

Every oath line in the chamber snapped white, then went dark. The throne platform split down the middle. The shell frame around the clerk shattered completely.

Veyra crossed the water and caught the clerk before they fell. The clerk’s silver script faded from their arms.

Orena drove her spear into the vow wheel again.

This time it turned.

The lower drain opened. Water began to pull toward the floor grate, dragging broken bone and red fragments with it.

Vordessa screamed as the throne’s claim collapsed around her.

”You destroy every structure and call the rubble freedom!” she shouted.

”No,” Austin Veyron said. ”I destroy the part that makes people yours.”

Nyra pulled the blue-black shard back to her chest. Vordessa’s red fragment, weakened and flickering, spun toward the open drain.

Vordessa caught it, but the current tore at her forge body. Cracks spread across her metal arms and face.

The Court’s Speaker raised the broken half of the shell hammer.

”Your claim is denied,” it said.

For a heartbeat, the court’s old authority pressed down on Vordessa. Not as a crown. Not as ownership. As a public refusal from the institution she had tried to take.

Vordessa smiled through the cracks.

”Denied claims still leave marks,” she said.

Then she let the current take her.

The red shard flashed once and pulled her forge body through a deep channel beneath the drain. The water swallowed her.

The cathedral began to collapse.

Bone pillars snapped. The ceiling groaned. Orena shouted directions through the draining water.

”North stair! Before the tide changes!”

The group ran.

Veyra carried the freed clerk over one shoulder. Rin led through the falling debris. Sable kept the broken crown shard between them and the remaining oath lights. Nyra held the heart shard close, blue-black glow guiding them through the dark.

At the final stair, the Speaker stopped.

A bone map had broken loose from the cathedral wall. Pale lines glowed across it, showing coast routes, drowned courts, and a deep red path leading beyond the Bone Coast into a region marked only by a clawed symbol.

”Vordessa’s next route,” the Speaker said. ”The Black Maw. Deep demon territory.”

Austin Veyron tore the map free and followed the others upward.

They burst onto the harbor platform as the cathedral door slammed shut beneath the tide. Ossuary Harbor was still standing. The root seed on the false envoy ship remained contained. Court delegates were reorganizing their banners without the Speaker’s hammer.

Elena’s relay token flared in Austin Veyron’s hand.

COURT ENVOY INTERCEPTED. SEAL UNOPENED. CITY SAFE FOR NOW.

Austin Veyron closed his eyes for one breath.

Grand Meridian had held again. It was becoming a strange kind of comfort, hearing that line instead of dreading it, and he let himself feel that small relief fully before the next problem could crowd it out.

The freed clerk looked at the bone map, then at the distant black sea.

”Vordessa will not stop,” they said.

”I know,” Austin Veyron replied.

Around them, the harbor was already beginning to sort itself back into something resembling order — delegates comparing damaged banners, dockworkers hauling salvage from the flooded pier, the Speaker’s remaining staff arguing in low voices about what came next now that the hammer no longer decided anything. No one thanked the team outright. No one needed to. The proof was in how quickly the harbor went back to arguing with itself instead of with a single voice.

Beyond the harbor, storm clouds gathered over the route to the Black Maw.

The next road was waiting.
