The Scumbags Guide to Enslaving Demon's

The market would not let him save anyone else until it knew Austin Veyron’s price.

The auction hall held its breath beneath the clock with no hands. Buyers in masks leaned forward around the circular platform. The forge agent raised the silver hammer above the Crownforge heart shard.

No one spoke until the hammer moved. The silence itself felt like part of the auction, all waiting to see who would give the market something first.

”Bidding begins with names,” it announced.

Black tokens warmed in every buyer’s hand.

Austin Veyron’s token burned.

OPEN ME, it whispered. KNOW WHAT YOU OWE.

Veyra kept one hand on his wrist. Not restraining. Reminding.

”Your choice,” she said.

Austin Veyron kept his fingers closed. The token wanted urgency. It wanted him to believe that hesitation would cost the woman on the platform whatever chance she still had.

Sable watched the heart shard in its glass case. ”If the auction opens with names, then it is trying to make the first bidder a point of authority. The shard will recognize whoever takes that role.”

”Can we bid without names?” Rin asked.

Vessa scanned the silver marks carved around the platform. ”Maybe. Kharos allows equivalent value if the auction item is classified as non-personal property. But the witness beside it makes the lots entangled. They want someone to bid on both.”

The collared woman looked toward them from the platform. Her eyes had not stopped moving since they arrived. When the auctioneer called for a first bid, she lifted her chin.

”I refuse sale,” she said.

A hush moved through the hall. Several buyers shifted in their seats. The refusal had changed the room, even if the rules had not yet admitted it.

The forge agent turned its helmet toward her. ”Refusal is not a recognized value.”

”It is mine.”

The silver collar at her throat brightened. Red light crawled down its chain toward the heart shard case.

Vessa cursed under her breath. ”They linked her refusal to the item. If the room treats her as a bidder, the market will call it participation.”

Austin Veyron looked around the auction hall. Masks. Titles. Hands holding tokens. No one would see the woman as a person unless it cost them something.

The system did not need anyone to deny she was a person. It only needed everyone to behave as though that fact mattered less than the lot.

”Then we change what is being auctioned,” he said.

The forge agent struck the hammer once.

”Opening bid,” it called.

A buyer in a feathered black mask raised a hand. ”I offer the memory of my first betrayal.”

The market lights dimmed thoughtfully.

Another buyer offered a ship route through a drowned court. A third offered the voice of a dead lover, stored in a bottle. The offerings drifted above the platform as pale shapes, weighed by the silver hammer.

Each offer made the hall feel more certain that a sale would happen. The market did not care what changed hands, only that something eventually did.

The woman in the collar remained still.

Austin Veyron’s token whispered louder.

YOUR PRICE IS USEFUL. OPEN ME.

Veyra leaned close. ”If you open it, do it on your terms. State the boundary first.”

Sable nodded. ”We witness. You do not owe the market silence about what it asks.”

Austin Veyron looked at the platform. The heart shard reflected his face in broken red angles. He had come to destroy crowns, not bargain with one in front of a room full of people who thought ownership was entertainment.

But the black token was not going to let him ignore it forever. The longer he carried it unopened, the more it could pretend that curiosity was inevitable instead of chosen.

”Target,” he said softly. ”My token’s price clause. I will read it, not accept it. Nothing it shows can become a contract without my spoken choice.”

”Witnessed,” Veyra said.

”Witnessed,” Sable replied.

Rin shifted to cover the platform route.

Austin Veyron opened his hand.

The black token split along a hidden seam. Inside was a line of white-red text.

ONE FUTURE COMMAND. WHEN ASKED, YOU WILL GIVE IT.

The words tried to enter his mind as a certainty. A future moment appeared before him: Grand Meridian under attack, allies dying, and a crowd begging him for an order only he could give. The token promised that when the moment came, he would command without question.

The vision did not show what happened afterward. It only showed the part where obedience looked necessary.

The price was not his name. It was his right to refuse becoming a sovereign.

The hunger inside him reacted with terrible interest. One command. One exception. It could save lives.

It could also become the first permanent crown.

”No,” Austin Veyron said.

The token tightened in his palm.

Across the hall, the forge agent raised the hammer again. ”The bidder rejects their price. Market procedure requires forfeiture.”

Vessa stepped forward. ”Procedure allows substitute value if the price is coercive by undisclosed future condition.”

The agent turned toward her. ”Courier, you have no standing in this room.”

”I have a permit. That is standing enough.”

The masked buyers murmured. Some laughed. Others seemed interested. Interest was useful. The market cared about value, and uncertainty could become leverage if enough buyers believed the lot had been misrepresented.

Vessa pointed to the auction circle. ”The token asked for a command without identifying the subject, scale, or consequence. That is not a price. That is an open claim.”

The forge agent’s red seams brightened. ”The market determines disclosure.”

”Not if the lot is fraudulent,” Sable said.

She held up her broken crown shard.

”This heart fragment is being sold as command architecture. It is not disclosed that it tries to make the winning bid a sovereign link. The attuned witness is not disclosed as a person with refusal.”

The hall grew quieter.

The feather-masked buyer lowered its hand. ”If the item changes the buyer, that affects value.”

Another mask spoke. ”If the witness rejects the lot, the lot may be impaired.”

The forge agent’s grip tightened around the hammer.

The auction had not stopped, but the room had shifted. Buyers who had been ready to spend were now measuring whether they were being sold something different from what had been announced.

Austin Veyron looked at the token in his palm. The market’s hidden clause pulsed like a wound.

DEVOUR wanted to take it. It wanted to consume the future command, make the temptation part of his strength, and leave nothing behind for the market to use.

He named the target.

”Coercive future-command clause. Not the whole token. Not any possible future choice.”

Veyra and Sable answered without hesitation. ”Witnessed.”

Austin Veyron pressed the opened token against his palm.

DEVOUR opened. The clause tasted like fear dressed in responsibility. It carried every moment someone might beg him to take control, every disaster that might make power feel like mercy.

YOU WILL COMMAND.

He consumed the claim.

The token went cold. A crack raced through it, then the black surface peeled away in ash. The future vision vanished. Austin Veyron was still standing in the auction hall, still able to choose what he would do when the next crisis came.

Nothing outside him had been solved. That was the point. The market had tried to sell certainty by taking away a future decision.

The forge agent stepped back.

”You have broken a price.”

”No,” Austin Veyron replied. ”I refused a trap.”

The collared woman spoke again, louder this time.

”I refuse sale.”

Her collar sparked.

Rin loosed an arrow. It struck the chain link just below the silver band, not cutting it, but pinning it to the platform rail. Veyra moved through the aisle, blade low, forcing the nearest buyers to choose whether they wanted to make a scene.

Sable walked into the auction circle with the crown shard raised.

”This lot contains a person who has declined the terms,” she said. ”Anyone who bids on her bids on a refusal.”

The market lights flickered. For several heartbeats, no one raised a hand.

The silence was different now. Before, the buyers had been waiting for value. Now they were waiting to see whether the auction could still pretend the refusal did not matter.

Then the forge agent slammed the silver hammer down.

The Crownforge heart shard’s case exploded.

Red light surged through the auction hall. The shard rose from its broken glass and released command threads into the ceiling, the floor, and every price mark around the room. The black clock overhead began to turn backward.

Vessa’s face drained of color. ”It is fusing with the price network.”

The forge agent’s armor began to melt into the platform. ”The auction is void,” it said. ”The market will become the bid.”

The attuned woman’s collar pulled her toward the floating shard.

Austin Veyron moved, but the floor beneath him opened into a web of black price lines. Each one whispered a different cost for crossing.

Every route toward the platform now demanded something different, as though the market were trying to rebuild the auction beneath their feet.

Veyra grabbed his arm.

”We get her first,” she said.

The hall shook as the Crownforge shard grew brighter.

The auction had become a convergence.
