The Scumbags Guide to Enslaving Demon's

Somewhere, on the other side of the Ash Meridian, a listening ear in the Night Market heard and responded.

The answer was returned, and it came west.

By the time Austin Veyron’s entourage made it back to Grand Meridian, the Freehold’s lobby was a waystation for three kinds of refugees. Route maps for the refugee camps were pinned to the old reception desk. Blackhook traders were comparing their water tallies to Cinder Hollow wardens. Former forge prisoners were rebuilding the south-gate walls in the same open public work camps as everyone else.

Vessa stood at a window with the black auction notice spread out in front of her.

”Kharos already registered the heart shard,” she said. ”The market does not have to hold an object to claim a sale. It only has to have enough people who believe the object will be sold.”

Elena looked up from the transfer book. ”And how does the market price that?”

”A true name, a future favor, a route, a memory, or something the market considers equivalent.”

”Not people,” Austin Veyron said.

Vessa met his eyes. ”The market considers people the easiest currency. That does not mean you have to use it.”

On the table between them was a shard from one of the broken heart-born shells. It was a black glass object, empty of command as it was, but still it formed the crown shape.

Austin Veyron had been thinking about it the whole way home. He had turned the problem over more than once in his head on the road, tried every angle he could think of, and none of them had left him satisfied. A market that priced silence as agreement was a market he was not going to bargain with in good faith.

”If we offer a Crownforge fragment, would that be enough?”

Vessa’s face changed. ”Possibly. But the market will ask if you have the right to sell it. Kharos hates stolen goods unless it profits from proving that they were stolen.”

Sable touched the broken crown shard at her sleeve. ”I will not sell my past.”

”No one is making you,” Austin Veyron said.

”I know. I am just saying it before the market gets a chance to make it sound reasonable.”

Veyra nodded once. ”Good boundary.”

The common ledger in the center of the table pulsed under Elena’s fingers. A new message blinked into white script on the page.

OUTER GATE. VISITOR WITH A MARKET SEAL.

Everyone in the lobby went still.

Marcus’s voice came over the relay from the gatehouse. ”One figure. No visible weapon. Claims it is here to reclaim a courier and issue terms.”

Vessa went pale.

”They found me faster than they should have.”

”Can they enter?” Austin Veyron asked.

”Only if someone grants audience. Kharos respects thresholds. It just makes the cost of refusing unpleasant.”

Hessa leaned over the table. ”We do not open the gate to a collector.”

”We do not have to,” Vessa said. ”But if it remains outside, it can file a claim against every route that trades with Grand Meridian. The market’s threats travel farther than its bodies.”

Austin Veyron felt the old instinct to decide alone begin to rumble in him. The threat was clear. The answer could be clear, too: take the market envoy, devour whatever contract had given it authority, and throw the rest in the road. He put that thought aside before it could take root. He had paid for that kind of certainty before. This was not the room for that kind of mistake again.

He looked at Veyra and Sable.

”Meeting in the outer court,” he said. ”Witnesses present. No one says a true name.”

They went together.

The envoy waited beyond the south gate’s temporary barricade. It wore a long coat of layered black paper, each sheet stamped with a silver price. Its face was hidden behind a polished mirror mask. In one gloved hand, it held a narrow scale with two empty pans.

”Grand Meridian,” it said. ”You hold an unreturned market delivery and possess an auctioned object without a seller’s permit.”

Marcus stayed on the wall with the city guard. Nysara was at the gate with Hessa, Neria, and several adult caravan leaders. The entire meeting was visible. No private contracts. No hidden rooms.

Vessa stood next to Austin Veyron, not behind him.

”The market did not own me,” she said.

The mirror mask reflected her face. ”The market owned the delivery conditions.”

”You wrote those conditions while I was dying in a ditch.”

”Conditions do not require comfort.”

Sable stepped forward. ”Neither does coercion.”

The envoy turned its mirror toward her broken crown shard. ”A discontinued sovereign artifact. Valuable. Offer it, and the courier’s claim may be reduced.”

Sable’s hand closed over the shard.

”No.”

The envoy’s voice remained polite. ”Then choose another price.”

Austin Veyron placed the empty heart-born glass fragment on the nearer scale pan.

”This is a broken command shell. No person owns it. It has no live route. Take it as equivalent value for a one-night courier permit.”

The envoy examined the fragment without touching it.

”Not sufficient.”

”What would make it sufficient?” Elena called from the gate.

The mirror mask turned toward the transfer book in her hands.

”The common ledger’s first route.”

Silence spread through the court.

The first route was the first shared path that had made the Freehold more than a hotel: the line that had proven people could witness one another without a crown. It was not a weapon. That made it more valuable.

”No,” Austin Veyron said.

The envoy raised a finger.

A black paper tag unfolded from its coat and flew toward Vessa’s throat. The open-eye stamp began to reform in the air.

Rin’s arrow pierced the tag before it could touch her.

The envoy did not flinch. ”A breach of market etiquette.”

The paper coat opened.

A contract construct crawled out of it, made of tags, ribbons, and ink-black hands. Its body carried no face, only an empty ledger page. Every hand reached toward a different person in the court.

STATE VALUE. STATE PRICE. STATE NAME.

The city guards held their ground, but some of the traders took a step back. The construct did not need to strike. It needed someone to answer the questions in fear.

Nysara raised her iron bar. ”No one answers it.”

The construct rushed Vessa.

Veyra intercepted, slicing through three black hands. The ribbons re-formed around her blade, trying to write a price across the steel. Maelis burned them away. Sarielle’s silver fire pinned the creature’s shadow to the ground.

Austin Veyron saw the construct’s core: a simple market claim that defined every silence as agreement.

DEVOUR wanted to swallow the whole thing.

”Target,” he said. ”Silence-as-consent clause. Nothing attached to anyone’s identity.”

”Witnessed,” Veyra called without looking away from the fight.

”Witnessed,” Sable said.

Austin Veyron stepped through the writhing ribbons and placed his hand on the blank ledger page.

DEVOUR opened.

The clause tasted like cold ink and closed doors.

UNSPOKEN IS ACCEPTED.

He consumed it.

The construct screamed. Every tag on its body went blank. The black hands lost shape, falling to the ground as ordinary paper scraps.

The envoy’s mirror mask cracked.

For the first time, anger entered its careful voice. ”You cannot revise market law.”

”I did not,” Austin Veyron said. ”I removed the lie hiding inside it.”

The envoy looked at the broken heart-born fragment on the scale. Then, slowly, it placed a silver seal beside it.

”One-night courier permit,” it said. ”Temporary identities only. No true names. Entry after moonrise. Departure price to be determined at the market’s discretion.”

Vessa took a breath. ”That last part is how they trap you.”

”We know,” Hessa said.

The envoy continued as though she had not spoken. ”The permit allows four holders and one courier. More than that becomes a delegation. Kharos taxes delegations differently.”

”Four and one,” Austin Veyron said.

The mirror mask turned toward him. ”The price of departure may exceed the price of entry.”

”Then we will decide when we get there.”

The envoy collected the empty glass fragment. For a moment, the fragment turned black in its hand. Then the envoy folded it into its paper coat.

”Market opens at moonrise,” it said.

The gate guards did not move aside. The envoy simply stepped backward into its own shadow and disappeared.

The outer court remained quiet for several breaths. No one spoke first. It was the kind of silence that felt earned rather than empty, the sort that came after a fight no one had wanted but everyone had been ready for.

Then Vessa picked up the silver seal.

”Four holders,” she said. ”You need people who can pass as courier assets without forgetting who they are.”

Veyra looked at Austin Veyron. ”You are not choosing alone.”

”I know.”

Sable set the broken crown shard on the table in the open court, not as payment but as a reminder.

”We choose the team together,” she said. ”And we decide what we will not sell before the market asks.”

The silver permit reflected the first rising moon.

Kharos was waiting.
