The Scumbags Guide to Enslaving Demon's

The Ash War had come home.

Austin Veyron and the strike team ran down the last slope toward Grand Meridian as red furnace light pounded the south wall. The mobile forge column had formed a half circle before the gate: six iron wagons connected by command chains, masked soldiers behind them, and a furnace on black wheels at the center.

Every time the furnace pulsed, red lines crawled toward the city stone.

The common ledger answered in white.

Routes flashed across the streets behind the gate, herding civilians away from the impact zone. People moved in teams instead of panicked crowds. Water carriers ran to the battlements. Medics used the old tram tunnel as a treatment line. Fighters took positions where they had chosen to stand.

Marcus saw Austin Veyron from the wall and did not pause with relief.

”Mobile furnace is trying to make the gate an intake,” he shouted. ”If it completes the first line, it can turn everyone behind the wall into forge material.”

Elena leaned over the parapet, transfer book open against the wind. ”We can keep the evacuation routes open, but the red chains are learning the ledger pattern.”

Austin Veyron stared at the furnace.

”It is not learning,” Taryn said. ”It is being taught.”

A figure stepped out from behind the lead wagon.

The demon wore heavy ash armor and a red metal mask divided by a vertical line. A long chain-axe rested on one shoulder. When the figure saw Taryn, it stopped.

”Taryn of the fourth pit,” it said. ”You should have been melted down.”

Taryn’s face went still. ”Zareth.”

Veyra drew her blade. ”Friend?”

”Lieutenant,” Taryn replied. ”He trained the recoverers.”

Zareth raised the axe. ”The Matron offers Grand Meridian an honest exchange. Open the gate. Give her the Devourer and the splinter. In return, the city keeps its walls.”

Austin Veyron stepped forward into the open ground.

”No.”

The masked lieutenant laughed. ”You think refusal matters after a furnace has chosen your foundation?”

The red chains struck the south gate.

Stone groaned. A crack of red light opened between the old iron doors.

”Move!” Marcus called.

The battle began.

Rin and the north-gate archers fired from the wall, targeting the masked soldiers’ chain handles. Sarielle’s silver fire wrapped the impact points, keeping the red metal from biting into the gate. Maelis sent controlled ember bursts under the wagons, forcing the drivers to scatter.

Veyra charged Zareth.

Their blades met with a sound like a bell being struck. Zareth’s chain-axe was heavy enough to split stone, but Veyra did not try to match it. She turned each blow aside, using the broken road surface and the wagon wheels to change the fight’s shape.

Austin Veyron reached the nearest red chain and put both hands on it.

DEVOUR surged.

The chain carried an entire furnace line, hundreds of commands braided together. If he consumed it all, he could rip the mobile forge apart in seconds. He could also pull its coercion through every route in the city and into himself.

”Not all of it,” Veyra had warned him.

Austin Veyron closed his teeth on the first command knot only.

OPEN.

He consumed the word.

The chain lost tension. It recoiled from the south gate like a burned snake.

Calder sprinted past him toward the central wagon. His scar was bright gray now, almost white in the furnace light.

”I can see the command junction,” he said. ”It is under the wheel housing.”

”You do not go alone,” Austin Veyron said.

Kesra joined Calder without a word. Taryn followed, spear low. The three of them slipped between the wagons while Austin Veyron kept the chain line from reforming.

Zareth saw them and roared. He forced Veyra back with a two-handed axe strike, then turned toward the central furnace.

”No,” Taryn shouted.

The lieutenant threw a red nail toward her.

It struck her shoulder plate and exploded into a web of wire. The wires tried to wrap around her throat.

Sable appeared at Taryn’s side, broken crown shard blazing white. She severed the wire before it tightened.

”Witness,” Sable said.

Taryn looked at her, breathing hard. ”Witness.”

The old Herald and the former pit scout moved together, cutting a path to the central wagon.

Above them, the wall shook again.

Elena’s voice came through the relay. ”The red lines are testing the west side. We need a way to confuse their count.”

Austin Veyron looked at the common ledger spreading white through the city.

”Change the roles,” he told her. ”Every ten breaths. Make the chains chase actions, not people.”

Elena understood immediately.

The white network shifted.

Defender became water carrier. Water carrier became scout. Scout became medic. The routes did not lie; they recorded what people had chosen to do in the moment. But the shifting work made the forge’s red chains hesitate. They could not turn a moving choice into a fixed rank.

The southern gate held.

Then the mobile furnace opened.

Its front panel split apart, revealing a red core made from layered names. Austin Veyron saw letters crawling through the heat, names from Grand Meridian’s streets and shelters, collected through old route marks and stolen trade records.

The furnace was not attacking the gate.

It was trying to introduce itself to the city.

Zareth raised his chain-axe and shouted toward the wall. ”The Matron’s city begins under yours!”

Austin Veyron ran for the core.

The lieutenant moved to stop him. Veyra caught Zareth’s axe with the white root chain, but the impact threw her to one knee. Austin Veyron reached the furnace housing just as Calder tore away the outer wheel plate.

Under it, a red command wheel turned around a single black seed.

”Do not destroy the wheel,” Taryn warned. ”It will trigger the core.”

”Then what?” Calder asked.

Zareth struck Kesra across the ribs and sent her into the mud. Sable pulled her clear before the next blow. The lieutenant’s red mask had cracked, showing dark skin and a furious eye beneath it.

”You cannot free a city from the shape of power,” he said. ”Someone always holds the chain.”

Austin Veyron saw the seed pulse under the wheel.

He could devour it.

The hunger rose like a storm inside him. A single black seed. A controlled bite. The cleanest possible answer.

He knelt beside the furnace, opened DEVOUR, and took the command that fed the wheel—not the seed itself, but the order that called it master.

The wheel screamed as the word came apart.

OBEY.

Austin Veyron consumed it.

Every red chain on the field went slack.

The mobile furnace shuddered and died.

Zareth froze. The force went out of his axe. Veyra disarmed him, kicked the weapon away, and drove him to the ground.

Rin had an arrow at his throat. Kesra, bruised and breathing hard, raised her spear.

”Kill him,” she said.

Zareth looked at Taryn. ”You know what the Matron does to failed lieutenants.”

Taryn’s spear shook. ”Yes.”

Austin Veyron stepped between them.

”No one kills him for information.”

Zareth laughed bitterly. ”Then what? You offer mercy and call it freedom?”

”I offer a choice. Tell us what you know. Be held with witnesses until the city decides you are safe or dangerous. Or run back to Vordessa without your furnace.”

”You think I can run back?”

”I think you can choose not to be her weapon.”

The lieutenant stared at the dead mobile forge. After a long time, he spoke.

”The heart is moving east. Vordessa has three sites left. One sends a column here. One prepares the salt pits. One is buried under this gate.”

The black seed beneath the command wheel pulsed.

Too late, Austin Veyron understood.

The furnace had not died.

It had planted itself.

The ground under the south gate split open in a thin black line. Red script rose through the crack, forming Vordessa’s voice in the air.

”Your city is already entered from below,” the Ash Matron said.

The black seed sank into the earth.

Every white route in Grand Meridian flickered.
