The Scumbags Guide to Enslaving Demon's

The last root had learned to move.

It did not crawl like an animal. It flowed through the hotel’s foundations with the ugly speed of spilled ink, tearing boards from the old ballroom floor as it passed. The ceiling above the boiler room cracked. Dust poured down in gray sheets.

”Upstairs,” Kesra said.

Austin Veyron looked at the copper-horned demon. She was pale from blood loss, but her grip on Veyra’s short sword was steady. The broken collar still hung in two pieces around her neck.

”You know its route?”

”I know what it wants.” Kesra pointed toward the stairwell. ”The old district. There is a shrine path beyond the west gate. It can use the dead route markers there to spread past the city.”

Sable’s expression tightened. ”The Emperor trained you on urban relays.”

”He trained all of us on something,” Kesra answered. ”Some of us survived long enough to hate what we learned.”

The ballroom groaned overhead.

Austin Veyron drew the white root chain. ”Then hate it while running.”

They hit the stairs together. Veyra took the lead. Rin was already calling targets through the common ledger, her voice traveling between volunteer runners and rooftop scouts. The lobby was a field of broken marble, injured fighters, and hurried medics, but the white routes still held. Every route was marked with a name, an intention, and a place to report danger.

The black root burst through the ballroom doors just as Austin Veyron reached the landing.

It was thicker now. It had ripped half the old dance floor free and wrapped the splintered boards around itself like armor. Mouths opened along its length. Some whispered offers. Others screamed in the voices of people it had watched during the siege.

’I CAN TAKE THE PAIN.’

’I CAN MAKE YOU SAFE.’

’I CAN GIVE YOU A CROWN THAT FITS.’

Maelis stepped forward, ember-light burning in her palms. ”It sounds desperate.”

”It is,” Austin Veyron said. ”Do not confuse that with harmless.”

The root smashed through a window and dropped into the street below.

Rin swore over the relay. ”It is heading west. Market district is still evacuating.”

Austin Veyron turned to Elena, who had appeared at the ballroom entrance with the transfer book tucked under one arm. ”Can you clear the street?”

”I can show them routes,” she said. ”I cannot make them take them.”

”That is enough.”

Elena opened the book. White script raced across the page, then leapt outward through the city. Shopkeepers saw safe streets in their route tokens. Parents saw where the medics were gathering children. The market guards saw which alleys had already been claimed by black sap.

The evacuation moved because people chose to move.

Austin Veyron chased the root through the broken window.

The street market had been lively less than an hour earlier. Now stalls stood abandoned beneath torn awnings. Fruit rolled through black rainwater. A spice cart burned near the curb, its smoke made bitter by demon sap. The root slid between the stalls, smashing whatever stood in its path.

Veyra landed beside Austin Veyron. ”It is trying to stay near civilians.”

”So we cannot use wide fire.”

Sarielle arrived on the opposite side of the street, silver flame coiling around one arm. ”I can make a narrow corridor.”

”Wait for Rin’s signal.”

The copper-horned demon came through the window last. Kesra staggered once, then straightened when she saw the root circle back toward a shelter entrance.

”It is baiting you,” she told Austin Veyron.

”I know.”

”Then why are you looking at it like you want to swallow it?”

The question struck too close.

DEVOUR had been restless since the relay in the basement. The remaining root carried the same command-seed flavor, a bitterness promising that one more mouthful would make everything simpler. If he took the whole thing, there would be no chance it reached the shrine path. There would also be no way to know what else it carried until it was inside him.

”I am deciding what I can live with,” he said.

Kesra’s eyes narrowed. ”That is not the same as deciding what you should do.”

Before he could answer, the root punched through the shelter wall.

Rin’s signal flashed on the white route.

”Now!”

Sarielle raised a thin wall of silver fire along the market lane. Maelis drove hot embers under the root’s armored boards. Veyra and Kesra attacked from opposite sides, blades cutting through the thorn knots that steered the mass. The root twisted violently, breaking stalls and throwing black spines into the smoke.

Austin Veyron caught one spine barehanded.

It tried to become a crown around his wrist.

He crushed it, then ran straight into the firelit corridor.

The root struck him across the chest. His ribs complained. He grabbed a low-hanging mouth before it could pull away and drove DEVOUR into the core of its command line.

This time he did not take everything.

He took the direction.

The root convulsed. Images poured through him: a black line leading west, an abandoned shrine, a hidden furnace beneath the hills, and a shard of dark metal stamped with a crown that had never been worn by a living person.

Ash Meridian.

The vision lasted a heartbeat. It was enough.

Austin Veyron released the root.

”It is carrying a beacon,” he called. ”Cut the outer layers. Leave the center to me.”

Veyra did not question him. Rin put two arrows through the central mouth, pinning it to a collapsed cart. Kesra stepped over the writhing thorn mass and drove her sword down where Sable pointed.

”Here,” Sable said. ”The relay nerve.”

Kesra hesitated at the sound of Sable’s voice. Then she cut.

The black root screamed with every throat it had borrowed.

The center split open.

A jagged splinter rolled onto the wet street. It was no larger than Austin Veyron’s hand, forged from dull black metal and etched with a broken crown. The root around it began to die.

Austin Veyron reached for the splinter, but Sable caught his sleeve.

”Do not consume that,” she said. ”Not yet.”

The old instinct rose in him—take it before it takes him, make the threat part of his strength. Veyra stood at his shoulder. Kesra stood across from him, breathing hard, waiting to see whether his words in the basement had meant anything.

Austin Veyron closed his hand without touching the shard.

”Fine,” he said. ”We study it first.”

The root collapsed into ash.

Across the market, the civilians began to emerge from the safe route lanes. They looked at the burned stalls, the armed demons, and the stranger with copper horns holding a borrowed sword. No one cheered. They were too tired for that.

Elena arrived with Marcus and the route runners. ”The city relays are quiet,” Marcus said. ”For now.”

”For now is enough for a rebuild,” Elena replied.

Kesra looked toward the black splinter. ”That beacon will lead back to a Crownforge in the Ash Meridian. The Emperor will rebuild around it if we leave it alone.”

Austin Veyron looked north, beyond Grand Meridian’s damaged walls.

He could still feel the splinter calling to DEVOUR.

This time he chose not to answer.

”We do not chase it tonight,” he said. ”We secure the city. We learn its road. Then we go to the Ash Meridian on our terms.”

The broken crown on the splinter caught the first weak light of morning.

It pointed north.
