The Scumbags Guide to Enslaving Demon's

The teeth opened.

The neutral vessel sailed toward the gate of pale teeth rising from the black fog. Each tooth was taller than a tower, wet with seawater and marked by thin red veins. Between them lay darkness, not a passage so much as a throat waiting to decide whether to close.

Orena gripped the tiller. ”This is where my maps end,” she said.

The black fog brushed the deck, and every traveler heard a different voice. Austin Veyron heard the Hunger Emperor.

YOU HAVE BEEN HUNGRY SINCE THE FIRST BITE. STOP PRETENDING YOU ARE NOT.

Veyra heard something else. Her face tightened, and her hand went to the rail. Rin’s arrow came halfway out of its sheath before she stopped herself. Sable’s broken crown shard darkened in her palm. Vessa stared at her black market token as though it had begun whispering a price.

The teeth spoke together.

STATE WHAT YOU WANT. WE WILL GIVE IT A ROAD.

Ceryn opened the record sheet. ”Gate term: private appetite offered in exchange for passage. No stated price,” they said. ”Which means the price is the part it is not saying,” Vessa murmured.

The gate’s fog shaped itself into figures across the deck. Before Austin Veyron stood a version of Grand Meridian under a single white crown. The city was safe. The walls were unbroken. Every route ran cleanly because everyone followed the same will. Before Veyra stood a fortress where no ally could be harmed. Before Sable stood a restored crown that had never served the Emperor. Before Rin stood over a map of every enemy trail. Before Nyra stood in a quiet room where the heart shard could never call her again.

The visions were precise. That made them dangerous. None of them offered anything Austin Veyron had not already wished for at some quiet hour on the road — a city that never argued with him, allies who never bled, an enemy trail with no dead ends. The gate had not invented these wants. It had only found them already sitting in each traveler, waiting for someone to say yes on their behalf.

Orena’s lantern went out, and the vessel slowed as the fog grabbed at the sails.

”Present roles,” Austin Veyron said.

Veyra looked at her unbreakable fortress. ”Shield. Not owner,” she said, and the vision flickered. Sable held up the broken crown shard. ”Witness. Not forgiven,” she said, and her restored crown cracked. Rin lowered her hand from the impossible map. ”Scout. Not hunter of every path,” she said, and the fog tore around her. Nyra pressed the heart shard against her chest. ”Attuned. Not a key,” she said, and the quiet room vanished. Vessa looked at the black token in her palm. ”Courier. Not debt,” she said, and the silver writing on the token went blank.

Ceryn wrote each answer down, not as a binding list, but as proof that the gate had been answered in the present.

The fog turned toward Austin Veyron. His white-crowned city waited. The people in it smiled when he walked past. They never argued. They never made a choice that slowed the route down. He could feel their safety, clean and absolute, waiting for him to take responsibility for it.

DEVOUR surged. The gate had found his oldest fear and dressed it as mercy.

”What is your role?” Veyra asked.

Austin Veyron could not answer immediately. The teeth moved closer. Water crashed against the hull. The neutral vessel creaked under the pressure.

STATE WHAT YOU WANT, DEVOURER.

He looked at the crown vision, then at his friends and allies on the real deck. ”I want power,” he said. The fog went still. Sable’s eyes narrowed, but she did not interrupt. ”I want enough power that no one can force the people I care about into chains again,” Austin Veyron continued. ”And I am afraid of what I would become if I used it without them.” The vision trembled.

”That is not a role,” the gate whispered.

”No,” Austin Veyron said. ”It is the truth. My role is choice.”

The white crown city shattered. The teeth opened wider, and a figure rose from the fog between the gate pillars. It wore armor made from black shell and had a mouth where its face should have been, filled with tiny pale teeth. A deep gatekeeper.

”Devourer identified,” it said. ”Eligible for lordship. The Maw accepts hunger without shame.”

A black mark appeared in the air over Austin Veyron’s chest.

DEVOURER-LORD.

The mark tried to settle into his skin. DEVOUR answered violently. The title carried power. It would give him authority over the gate, the fog, perhaps every hungry thing beyond it. The hunger in him wanted to take the title and make the Black Maw kneel before he ever entered.

”Target,” Austin Veyron said, his voice rough. ”Lordship-label clause. Not the gate, not its hunger, not any person here.” Veyra was at his right. Sable at his left. ”Witnessed,” they said together.

Austin Veyron grabbed the black mark. DEVOUR opened. The label tasted like a crown made of teeth.

DEVOURER-LORD.

He consumed the claim. The gatekeeper shrieked. The black mark broke into salt and fell through his fingers. The fog recoiled from the vessel, and the pale teeth scraped backward through the water.

The gatekeeper’s mouth widened in fury. ”You deny your hunger,” it said.

”No,” Austin Veyron answered. ”I deny your right to name it for me.”

The deep gatekeeper struck the ship with a wave shaped like a jaw. The deck tilted. Orena fought the tiller. Rin fired three arrows into the wave’s dark hinge. Nyra lifted the heart shard, and blue-black light formed a path through the water ahead. ”Follow the light!” she called. Veyra cut a fog tendril that tried to pull Ceryn overboard. Sable pressed the broken crown shard to the mast, keeping the sail cloth from turning into another contract. Vessa threw her courier chain around a tooth of the gate, using the tension to hold the ship steady as it crossed the final stretch.

The gatekeeper lunged one last time. Austin Veyron did not devour it. He swung the white root chain across its black shell armor. The chain caught the open mouth. Veyra seized the other end, and together they pulled the gatekeeper aside just long enough for the vessel to pass through the teeth.

The fog closed behind them.

Silence fell. In that quiet, no one moved right away — Rin kept her bow half-raised out of habit rather than need, and Ceryn’s hand hovered over the record sheet as though unsure whether what had just happened counted as an ending or only a pause. Then the Black Maw interior sea opened before the ship.

The water was darker than the sky, but it was not empty. Lights floated across the waves: small settlements built on living coral, demon fishing villages clinging to giant shells, lantern rafts moving between black islands. Some lights burned red. Others burned green or blue.

None looked safe. Even the settlements that burned a calm, steady blue had the look of places that had learned to keep their light low on purpose, the way a creature stays still when something larger swims past overhead.

A beacon rose from the nearest rocky outcrop, its face a circle of pale teeth. Red light blinked from its center.

Ceryn checked the bone map. ”Signal match,” they said. ”Vordessa’s fragment passed this way less than a day ago.”

Orena looked toward a distant shape on the horizon. A floating fortress drifted there, built from black reef stone and the skeleton of something enormous. Red light glowed from openings along its sides. ”The Hunger Reef,” she said.

A line of small boats detached from the fortress and began moving across the black water. Their crews wore pale tooth masks, and each craft dragged a net that glimmered with red hooks. ”Patrol boats,” Orena warned. ”They net hunger-scented creatures and sell the strongest ones to reef lords.”

”Can they see us?” Ceryn asked.

”Not yet,” Rin said. ”But they can smell the shard if they get close.” She kept her voice low even though the patrol boats were still far off, as though caution here was a habit worth building early rather than one she could pick up later once it mattered more.

Orena turned the neutral vessel toward a field of low coral lights. ”Then we enter the reef through the settlement lanes,” she said. ”Keep your roles. Keep your appetites quiet.”

Nyra held the heart shard tighter. ”The fragment is there,” she said. Her grip did not shake, though her voice carried the particular steadiness of someone choosing not to sound afraid rather than someone who genuinely wasn’t.

Austin Veyron looked at the fortress and felt DEVOUR wake in answer. The Black Maw had not named him a lord. It had simply given him something hungry to hunt, and somewhere beneath its red-lit skeleton, Vordessa was already trying to turn that hunger into her next crown. He meant to make sure it stayed only that — a hunt, not a coronation, and not hers either.
