This Doctor Is Too Wealthy

”Very familiar?”

”Well, not really. It’s just that this woman’s family lives in the apartment above ours, so I’ve seen her a few times over the days.”

Wei Kaida shook his head with a wry smile, while Du Heng asked with interest, ”Wow, you live in the same building? She must be very bold then. Isn’t she afraid you’ll tell her husband?”

”Sigh, let me put it this way, Du,” Wei Kaida said, affecting a profound tone. ”Before I started working at the clinic, I just thought it was a way to earn a living. But after I really got into it, I realized this place isn’t just for seeing patients and making money; it’s an intelligence hub.”

Wei Kaida glanced sideways at Du Heng. ”After these past few months of experience, there’s nothing that happens in the residential areas around our clinic that I don’t know about.”

Du Heng looked at the somewhat smug Wei Kaida and laughed. ”Heh, not bad. You’ve skipped many years of groundwork and gone straight to being the director of an intelligence station. But seriously, isn’t she afraid you’ll spill the beans?”

”Pfft, spill the beans? Am I sick in the head? I’m not a gossip; I don’t have a hobby of stirring up trouble about others.” Wei Kaida expressed strong disdain for Du Heng’s idea. ”Besides, patients have a right to privacy. If I were to blab that so-and-so is messing around with so-and-so and caught some disease, believe it or not, they’d sue me in minutes. If something like that happened even once, do you think the ordinary people around here would still come to my clinic for treatment and medicine? Who the hell wants to admit they’re sick?”

Du Heng nodded in understanding. ”That’s true. A clinic relies on repeat business, on serving regular customers. Confidentiality is indeed very important.”

With that, Du Heng slapped his thighs, stood up directly, and said, ”Let’s go. I’ll treat you to a meal.”

But Wei Kaida, unexpectedly, waved his hand. ”Forget it, I’ll pass. My Dad went to visit relatives today, and the nurse took leave for some family matters. I should stay a bit longer, just in case someone comes to the door for medicine, so things aren’t delayed.”

”Are you sure you don’t want to go?” Du Heng looked at Wei Kaida in surprise. ”You’ve worked hard these past two months. On behalf of Xiao Yi, I want to thank you, his Master. Come on, being dedicated doesn’t mean you can’t take a short break.”

As Du Heng spoke, he started to pull Wei Kaida towards the door. He had thought that given Wei Kaida’s personality, he would reluctantly get up with a little coaxing.

However, Wei Kaida’s choice once again exceeded Du Heng’s expectations. ”Alright, we’re brothers, so let’s not be so formal. Xiao Yi is your nephew, and now he’s my disciple too. There’s no need for such sentimentality. Besides, from now on, you have to send him here every weekend. I need to supervise Xiao Yi’s review of his lessons; otherwise, these two months of effort will have been for nothing.”

Du Heng looked Wei Kaida up and down. ”Are you really taking this seriously?”

Wei Kaida chuckled softly. ”Of course, I have to. Xiao Yi is a good seedling, and most importantly, the child is willing to learn. Recognizing Medicine Ingredients, memorizing primers—it’s all tedious and time-consuming, but he can sit still and remember it. If I don’t take it seriously, I’d be letting him down.”

He sighed softly before continuing, ”I guess this is how my life will be. I understood things too late. No matter how hard I study now, I’ll never be able to catch up to you and Jin in this lifetime.”

He then looked around the clinic. ”You’ve seen it; the clinic’s conditions are what they are. In the future, I’m destined to deal with colds, fevers, and diarrhea for the rest of my life. However, this kind of work and life is actually best for someone restless like me—it’s free and comfortable. So, if I’m not capable myself, so be it. But I must train a brilliant disciple. A master gains honor through their disciple. Those outstanding people whom I can’t catch up to now, when I’m seventy or eighty years old, they’ll have to address me as Elder Wei and Brother Kaida.”

Wei Kaida suddenly winked at Du Heng, teasing, ”Take your current teacher, for example. Riding on your reputation, Du Heng, who dares to call your teacher just ’Li’ anymore? Everyone respectfully addresses him as Professor Li now. Of course, he benefited from a ready-made situation, while I have to cultivate my talent from scratch. So, when Xiao Yi makes a name for himself, I’ll stand even taller—straighter than your teacher.”

There was a mix of truth and exaggeration in these words, but they also reflected Wei Kaida’s genuine thoughts. Hearing Wei Kaida meander his way to Li Jianwei, Du Heng was utterly speechless.

”That’s enough out of you. Although my teacher hasn’t taught me much directly, he has provided me with incredible resources.”

Du Heng rolled his eyes and said, ”Otherwise, do you really think I was selected as a Famous Traditional Chinese Medicine Doctor and got into the Health Group at such a young age solely because of my high skill level?”

”Isn’t that it?”

”Bullshit. There are plenty of people in this world more skilled than I am,” Du Heng said, a bit helplessly. ”Let me tell you about one I know. There’s a senior doctor in Lin County Town. His skill in feeling the pulse and diagnosing is exceptional, not to mention his prescribing and preparing of medicine—I’ve learned a lot from him. He’s highly skilled and has a good reputation locally. But can he be selected as a Famous Traditional Chinese Medicine Doctor? Can he apply for the research projects I currently have?”

As soon as Du Heng finished speaking, Wei Kaida immediately became displeased and said sarcastically, ”Du, what are you trying to say? Are you suggesting I won’t be of any help to Xiao Yi’s future development?”
