This Doctor Is Too Wealthy

The girl’s words greatly pleased Du Heng. He chuckled and said, ”There’s no need for your father to come over. We are all incredibly busy with work; he doesn’t need to make such a long trip.”

This was followed by another round of polite insistence and refusal, which only ended when they arrived home, and Du Heng firmly had his way.

When Wu Shengnan returned, it was almost twelve o’clock. However, Du Heng hadn’t fallen asleep as usual; instead, he was tossing and turning in bed.

He had been sitting all day and had also gotten himself worked up and a bit angry, causing the ache in his strained waist to flare up again. It wasn’t a sharp pain, but a dull, stifling discomfort that kept him awake. To make matters worse, he had used up all the medicine he had prepared for himself today.

After Wu Shengnan learned about the situation, her anger towards Du Heng dissipated. When she heard that he had saved a child, she couldn’t bring herself to blame him. She could only quietly and skillfully lift Du Heng’s clothes and give him a massage.

「The next morning.」

Their usual routine was reversed. Normally, Du Heng would take Wu Shengnan to and from work, but today, Wu Shengnan was taking Du Heng to work.

After dropping the three of them—Du Heng, Du Xuejing, and presumably another person from the hospital—off at the hospital, Wu Shengnan instructed Du Xuejing to keep a close eye on Du Heng, then rushed to work in his car.

As for Du Heng, the first thing he did upon arriving at the hospital was to hurry to the child’s hospital room.

In the ward at this time, the nurses had just completed their shift change. The morning shift nurses were beginning their ward rounds, while the doctor who had been on the night shift wasn’t sleeping in the duty room but was quietly watching over the child.

As Du Heng approached, he gently examined the child’s condition and asked softly, ”Has there been any improvement?”

The on-duty doctor replied in a low voice, ”He finished three doses of medicine by dawn. The child was more awake for a while and even sat up by himself for a bit. However, he said he felt dizzy and couldn’t sit up for long, so he lay down again after a short while.”

”Has he eaten anything?”

”He had some porridge earlier, but not much.”

After completing his gentle examination, Du Heng carefully placed the child’s hand back under the quilt. ”Being able to eat is the best news. Tell Doctor Ma that the child’s medicine doesn’t need to be changed and must not be stopped. We’ll focus on thoroughly stabilizing his original yang before discussing further treatment.”

”Yes, Dean,” the on-duty doctor responded softly. He then took out several report forms from the drawer and handed them to Du Heng. ”These are from the laboratory tests Doctor Ma urgently ordered for the child after work yesterday. Please take a look.”

Du Heng frowned slightly; he hadn’t expected Doctor Ma to actually run more tests on the child.

He took the reports and looked: hemoglobin was 5.5 grams, a slight increase; the white blood cell count was over 290,000. Although still frighteningly high, it had also started to decrease.

Du Heng sighed softly and handed the inspection sheet back to the on-duty doctor.

Actually, he didn’t even need to look at the report. Just by observing the child’s own reactions, he knew what those values would be: the low ones would surely rise, and the high ones would surely fall. However, Doctor Ma’s decision to run the test was a sound one, so Du Heng didn’t comment on it. He simply instructed the on-duty doctor again, ”Three doses a day for another three days. Once the child is completely stabilized, we’ll proceed with the follow-up treatment.”

After speaking, Du Heng left the hospital room and hurried back to his office to attend to his own matters.

In the following days, Du Heng focused most of his energy on this child. Meanwhile, his teacher, Li Jianwei, focused most of his energy on him.

「Meanwhile.」

In a large conference room, Li Jianwei was taking a break, quite satisfied as he sipped his tea. The two-day conference had been a bit tiring, but the rewards were significant.

As he was quite satisfied enjoying his tea alone, Ge Long, the Director of the Hematology Department from the same workplace and also attending the conference, came over. ”Li, congratulations!”

Li Jianwei smiled modestly. ”What is there to congratulate me for?”

”Li, I heard that in the recent voting for Provincial Famous Chinese Medicine, President Du was among the nominees, and his vote count was quite high!” Ge Long said with a broad smile. ”His selection should be a sure thing this time, right?”

”That boy has made some achievements, and it’s thanks to the high regard of our seniors and peers that he received some votes. As for whether his selection is certain, I wouldn’t dare say. But he’s still young. If it doesn’t happen this time, there will be plenty of opportunities in the future.”

Although Li Jianwei’s words were very modest, inwardly he was incredibly gratified—a feeling beyond words. Especially when he recalled the scene from the meeting a few days ago, the smile on his lips became even wider. A unanimous vote! That was something that would make him grin even in his dreams. As for today’s meeting and whether Du Heng would ultimately be selected for the Provincial Expert Database, he wasn’t too concerned about the final outcome anymore.

Seeing Li Jianwei’s increasingly unrestrained smile, Ge Long felt a pang of envy and jealousy. But what could he do? Li Jianwei had lucked into finding such an outstanding disciple! If he had such an impressive student who brought him so much honor, his own smile might be even more unrestrained and exaggerated than Li Jianwei’s. Ah, fate! It’s just how things are, he thought.

”I also heard President Du has been recommended to join the Health Group?”

Instantly, Li Jianwei’s wrinkled face bloomed like a multi-layered chrysanthemum, each crease seeming to radiate joy. ”Ah, that boy... I don’t even know how he managed it, but he somehow got recommended. I heard some higher-ups nominated him as well.

”Sigh, although it’s a good thing, the pressure will be immense. The risks involved are not something a young man his age can easily manage.

”I’m truly worried that his youthful impetuosity might lead him to do something rash at times.”

This time, Ge Long couldn’t hold back anymore when he saw the contrast between Li Jianwei’s modest words and his utterly smug expression. He couldn’t help but tease, ”Li, wipe that gloating smile off your face! President Du, a doctor from a second-level hospital, has been selected as a Famous Traditional Chinese Medicine Doctor and is joining the Health Group. These are heights that even you, his teacher from a Grade 3A hospital, haven’t reached! How can you have the nerve to grin so widely in front of us all?”

Li Jianwei didn’t blush in the slightest, saying proudly, ”The student surpasses the master! This just proves what a good teacher I am.”

Ge Long rolled his eyes. ”You’re truly shameless.”

Li Jianwei chose to take this as a compliment and continued to chuckle gleefully, leaving Ge Long utterly exasperated.

Remembering why he had approached him, Ge Long mentally held his nose and endured Li Jianwei’s insufferably smug demeanor. ”Li, President Du has been treating a child with leukemia recently, hasn’t he?”

Li Jianwei gave him a sidelong glance. ”Yes, that’s right. That boy of mine reports the child’s treatment process and current condition to me every day, asking for my input. By the way, why are you asking about this?”
