This Doctor Is Too Wealthy

Moreover, according to the *Jingyue Quanshu*, long-term illness inevitably leads to kidney damage. This child had received treatment for a long time before coming under our care. Not only did the disease damage his kidneys, but the chemotherapy process also harmed them.

So, the child’s current situation, with ailments like a cold, is merely superficial. The real cause is long-term illness damaging his kidneys. This has led to kidney yin deficiency, instability in his original yang, and the emergence of premonitory signs of syncope.”

Doctor Ma began to understand, but when he thought about the previous treatment, he immediately asked, ”What about our previous treatment?”

Du Heng admitted the mistake generously, ”My thinking was incomplete; I didn’t consider this point. It was treating the symptoms but not the root cause, leaving a minor loose end.

But it’s not a major issue. The child’s overall condition has stabilized. So, we now only need to add a potent, flesh-and-blood product like velvet antler to the original formula. This will warm and nourish the kidney governor and promote blood production, easily resolving the issue.”

Hearing Du Heng’s solution, Doctor Ma didn’t relax. Instead, his eyebrows furrowed more deeply. He asked cautiously, ”Dean, the treatment cost for this child is now being covered by our department. Is adding velvet antler too expensive?”

Velvet antler is an excellent product for tonifying kidney yang and nourishing essence and blood, but it is expensive. Prices vary from several thousand yuan per kilogram.

Considering the child’s current situation and Du Heng’s habit of using large doses of medication, the dosage might exceed one kilogram.

As the person in charge of the Chinese Medicine Department, Doctor Ma would try to save money whenever possible, but if it couldn’t be saved, there was no other way.

Du Heng was a bit surprised to hear this, but he immediately said, ”It doesn’t matter if we don’t use velvet antler. We can use the Kidney Four Agents to nourish the kidney and tonify qi and blood; the effect will be the same.”

The Kidney Four Agents are medlar, cuscuta seeds, psoralen, and epimedium.

Hearing that Du Heng changed the prescription, Doctor Ma immediately breathed a sigh of relief; he could definitely accept this new formula.

Back in the office, looking at the new prescription Du Heng had written, Doctor Ma felt grateful for his foresight, especially when he saw the sixty-gram dosage for the Kidney Four Agents.

When he ventured to ask, ”Dean, how long should the child take this prescription?” Du Heng’s answer made him inwardly applaud himself.

Because Du Heng, after looking at the prescription and considering it, said, ”Don’t worry about that for now. Just have him continue taking it. We’ll adjust based on the specific situation.”

Du Heng only said it depended on the specific situation, but in practice, the child ended up taking ten doses in total.

Was it effective?

Of course, it was.

After the second dose, the child’s vomiting and diarrhea completely stopped. After the fifth dose, his appetite increased significantly, he became more energetic, and he could finally get out of bed to play.

By the tenth dose, during the day, he was indistinguishable from a normal child. He even asked the nurses for some books and paper so he could write and draw, as his head no longer felt dizzy.

Doctor Ma had been wearing a genuine, happy smile these past few days, a joy that came from the bottom of his heart.

First, the two students he had taken on out of consideration for Du Heng had finally left, and he had completed the task Du Heng had assigned.

Second, his hard work hadn’t been in vain. The two students had given him gifts and treated him and his colleagues to a meal. Although the gifts were inexpensive and he had reciprocated, the respect he received made him feel his efforts over the past month or so had been worthwhile.

Third, the child with leukemia he had admitted was improving daily. As a doctor, this brought him great joy and a sense of responsibility and honor.

Fourth, Du Heng had said today that since the current formula was effective, they shouldn’t alter it. They would continue using the previous prescription, merely adding Deer Cream. This made him even more satisfied with his earlier suggestion; otherwise, he couldn’t imagine how much would have been spent on velvet antler alone.

As for Deer Cream, it’s a product made from deer fetus. It has the effects of tonifying qi and nourishing blood, dispelling cold and clearing the meridians, and tonifying the kidney and strengthening yang. However, when used for this child, they were primarily interested in its effect of tonifying qi and nourishing blood; the other two effects weren’t a major consideration.

The key point was that a bottle only cost tens to a hundred yuan, and one bottle could be used several times, so it wasn’t a significant expense.

Doctor Ma was happy. However, Ge Long and the others, who received Li Jianwei’s materials, were dumbfounded as they reviewed the data sent to them daily.

Their reaction was just as Li Jianwei had initially predicted. They could only partially comprehend Du Heng’s treatment approach and choice of medication. Unable to grasp it fully, they would turn to Li Jianwei for a detailed explanation each day after receiving the materials.

Although Li Jianwei’s clinical approach and prescription methods were somewhat rigid and inflexible, as a professor of Chinese Medicine, his teaching skills were exceptional.

Although he couldn’t have formulated Du Heng’s prescription himself, he could dissect, analyze, and articulate the reasoning behind it flawlessly. His explanations were often clearer than those of Du Heng, the originator of the formula.

This was his particular expertise, a skill that commanded respect from others.

Of course, despite his excellent explanations, only Deputy Director Cai, who had a foundation in the basics of traditional Chinese medicine and held the title of Deputy Chief Physician in the integration of traditional Chinese medicine and Western medicine, could truly understand them. As for Ge Long and the others, it was like listening to an arcane text; the words went in one ear and out the other, having little real effect.
