Our Family Has Fallen

Chapter 1309: Chapter 712: Rendezvous_2

Although team collaboration was somewhat disjointed, in terms of strength, this wasn’t an issue. Balistan would rather partner with these legions than cooperate with those adventurers.

Rushing out of the street back onto the main road, however, this was just the beginning of true despair, because those skeletons also favored open areas. Now they had lost the cover of buildings, and there was only one way out.

On the other side, Reynard sent out several signal flares, receiving a response from the light pillar, along with information from the hawk. Both sides unified their retreat plan.

Then he led his people back to the main road, where some were being evacuated while a portion of the cavalry was fighting against the skeletons.

”Quickly! Get out of here!”

”Go this way.”

Fortunately, this was the outskirts. Apart from some special locations, the skeletons hadn’t spread here yet, allowing them to move without much resistance.

Mainly, those adventurers didn’t need any urging; they ran swiftly on their own, soon emptying the main road.

Originally, although the situation was difficult, there was also a direction for effort.

However, it was at this moment that the second altar was activated. A faint red mist began to spread, and after the last light pillar rose, it completely obscured their view, directly losing both sides’ positions.

This situation made Reynard hesitant for a moment.

They weren’t heavily armored cavalry, but light-armored lancers, with muskets as their main weapon and sabers as their secondary weapon. This setup focused on mobility, with limited assault capability.

That’s why Reynard previously chose to have someone draw the skeletons away, rather than charge directly.

Meanwhile, this mobility required movement, so there was a great emphasis on vision and reconnaissance. With the dark shroud already making things difficult, the spreading red mist further eliminated their greatest advantage. If they must advance, it would only be a blind charge.

Their muskets had minimal effect on the skeletons, meaning they could only rely on melee weapons to carve a bloody path.

Reynard felt increased pressure. He wanted to save people, but that didn’t mean sending the cavalry to take risks and court death; it was a very troubling dilemma.

A nearby aide urged, ”Milord! Their situation is even more difficult than ours. We can’t hesitate any longer; the number of skeletons will only increase.”

”We are ready.”

”Our cavalry is definitely not weaker than others.”

”After all, they are just bones.” ℯ

Reynard turned to look at the cavalry already assembled. Everyone seemed relaxed, but their beliefs were palpably strong.

At this moment, there was no need to hesitate any longer. He immediately drew his longsword and raised it high, letting out a roar.

”Cavalry Troop, attack!”

With that, he urged his horse to a trot, gradually speeding up into a charge, and the others unsheathed their sabers and followed suit.

”For Hamlet!”

Compared to those battles involving thousands upon thousands of cavalry, this cavalry of just about a hundred seemed laughably small.

Yet, when they charged, their true power could be felt, like a spear piercing through, leaving behind only crushed bones beneath the hooves.

Both sides were fighting desperately for unseen comrades, Balistan swinging his Morningstar Hammer to smash bones, Reynard wielding his longsword to sever countless skeleton heads.

However, Balistan’s Morningstar Hammer grew heavier, and Reynard’s longsword, known as the Champion’s Proof, began to show damage from countless strikes.

No matter how fine, it was but mundane iron. Colliding with bones controlled by evil force, it was no surprise if it got nicked.

But this also represented the cavalry’s performance. In an area where skeletons were sparse, they easily charged in, but as they advanced, the number of skeletons increased, and the cavalry squad’s pace gradually slowed.

For cavalry, once they lost speed, their greatest advantage was gone. Although the horses wore blankets to resist some skeleton scratches, there were skeletal warriors among these skeleton mobs wielding weapons.

The horses’ stamina was finite, and Reynard had to reserve energy for retreat, but under the red mist, their opponents’ location was unknown.

Anxiety and pressure almost suffocated him...

On the other side, it was the same. The desperate breakout came at a cost, and the team’s state hit another low point. More terrifying was the red mist obscuring their view.

They were like people hovering at the edge of hell, completely unaware of their location or how long they’d been advancing, how far they were from the evacuation point, only knowing they were already halfway into hell.

The unknown was the greatest fear; sometimes, psychological collapse was far more terrifying than physical breakdown.

Cowardice and weakness finally ensnared their prey.

”No, I want to go home.”

”Is this hell?”

”Ahhhhh...”

Minds unclear, breathing heavily, they stepped across the boundaries of reason into boundless madness!

Some directly broke from the team, rushing outside. Perhaps in their eyes, the path led to roads paved with flowers of hope. But regrettably, the illusion couldn’t breach reality; they were engulfed by skeletons instantly.

No way out! Deep in enemy lines, forced to keep fighting...

Under such circumstances, several others went mad, howling like ghosts, as if they would disintegrate before the skeletons broke through.

In this hell, there was no hope, not even a sliver of hope.

Even Martin couldn’t help but waver, fear tormenting his mind. He prayed to the Holy Light, receiving no response.

Had he truly been forsaken by the Holy Light?

The lifelong wish to make the Holy Light great again seemed so out of reach...

Interestingly, the Candlelight Priest, also of the Church, showed no wavering, steadfastly wielding shield and Warhammer in defense, as if determined to fight evil to the death. Compared to the Church’s very concept, the priest sought a pure form of belief.

Even the legions acted like robots, though damaged, still holding up a space.

Similarly, the Honor Guard fought continuously, undeterred by fear. As the Lord’s Honor Guard, Hamlet’s pride, they had disregarded death since selection.

”Body as firm as iron, my heart as steel” was no mere slogan for them.

Dismas and Balistan were staunchly loyal to the Lord. Tadiff and Laura, though joining later, inexplicably believed in something too.

This was the charm of conviction, as exquisite as a gemstone. But even the sturdiest gemstone could shatter, and willpower had limits. Could they see hope?

Suddenly!

The red mist carried noises of slashing and trampling hooves and neighs. A cavalry squad, torches aloft, shattered the red mist, appearing in front like a fiery dragon tearing through the darkness.

The two sides met on the main road, a scene that directly relieved the pressure on both sides.

Nothing could give them more confidence than the charging cavalry squad, and at the same time, Reynard and his men finally found their target.

”Hahahaha!”

”Yay!”

”Save me! Save me!”

The previously faltering team was rapidly invigorated with a powerful will to survive. Even the surging skeletons couldn’t shake them. Had they been like this earlier, they wouldn’t have collapsed; truly amusing.

The retreat plan had been prepared long ago. Reynard shouted loudly.

”Take action!”

With the words just spoken, everyone seemed ready. Countless objects were thrown by the cavalry, accompanied by a shout of warning.

”Watch out for the explosion!”

The adventurers hadn’t reacted, but Hamlet’s people did, quickly pulling back, abandoning the hard-won living space.

While others were still perplexed, explosions occurred, with a series of blasts erupting among the skeletons.

Such an exaggerated density made the bombs’ power even more spectacular, bones flying everywhere.

In the firelight, a portion around was cleared, leaving chaos like a dog’s bite.

Human art is the explosion!
