Urban God of Rebate: Infinite Returns Of Women And Powers

Sean’s Thursday economics lecture started at nine.

Dr. Alan Marsh was already at the front of the room when Sean arrived at eight fifty-eight. This was normal. Marsh operated on his own clock and his own clock ran early.

Sean took his usual seat. Third row, right of center. The position he’d settled on the second week of semester and had not adjusted since. Close enough to see everything on the board. Far enough from the front that nothing required performance.

Marcus Webb arrived at nine exactly and dropped into the seat beside him.

Marcus was nineteen. Broad face, easy grin, the specific unhurried energy of someone who had figured out early that being genuinely friendly cost less than managing how you came across. He was the only person in the cohort who spoke to Sean consistently without adjusting for the gap between them. Not because he didn’t notice the gap. Because he’d decided it wasn’t the point.

”Finished the Fischer analysis,” Marcus said, settling his bag.

”I read it,” said Sean.

”And,” said Marcus.

”The second scenario modeling is solid,” said Sean. ”The assumption on the rate compression in paragraph four is slightly optimistic.”

”I know,” said Marcus. ”I flagged it to myself and then left it in anyway because the optimistic version made the conclusion cleaner.”

”That’s the wrong reason to leave an assumption in,” said Sean.

”I know,” said Marcus. ”That’s why I’m telling you so you can tell me I’m wrong officially.” He pulled out his notebook. ”Consider it officially flagged.”

Sean looked at the front of the room.

Marsh was not starting the lecture.

He was standing at the podium looking at the room with the specific quality of someone who has something to say that is not on the syllabus.

The class settled.

”Before we begin,” said Marsh. ”Administrative item.”

He let the room go quiet completely before continuing. The particular patience of someone who understood that silence was a tool.

”The inter-university outdoor strategy program runs its annual session in three weeks,” said Marsh. ”Four universities. Three days. The retreat property in the hill country. The faculty nominates one student per school per year based on a set of criteria that I won’t enumerate because the criteria are the kind of thing that sounds worse when it’s listed than when it’s simply applied.”

He looked at the room.

”This year’s nomination from our faculty is Sean Miller.”

The room did what rooms did when a name was said in front of thirty people. A specific quality of attention shifting, the kind Sean had been navigating since the Vertex disclosure had made his name something people recognized.

He didn’t react.

Marsh was already continuing.

”The program runs Thursday to Sunday of week nine. Attendance is not optional once nominated. The retreat property is two hours out. Faculty contact for logistics is in your student portal by end of day.” He looked at Sean for exactly one second. Not approval. Just acknowledgment. ”Now. Fischer model. Page twelve. Who wants to start with what they got wrong.”

The lecture moved on.

Marcus leaned over.

”Congratulations,” he said quietly.

”It’s a trip,” said Sean.

”It’s a nomination,” said Marcus. ”Marsh has been doing this for eleven years. He nominates one freshman per year. I looked it up.”

Sean looked at the board.

”How do you know I’m the first freshman he’s nominated,” he said.

”I looked that up too,” said Marcus.

After the lecture Sean walked across the quad toward the library.

His phone buzzed.

Clara.

Vertex final disbursement confirmed. Everything closed correctly. A pause. The round is done Sean. Everything that needed to happen happened.

He looked at that message.

He thought about a cap table on a laptop screen and a year eight review clause and a conference suite and a corridor and a restaurant with no sign.

It’s done, he said.

Yes, she said. Dinner this week. You choose the night.

Saturday, he said.

Saturday, she said. And then: I’ll make a reservation.

You’re going to plan the restaurant aren’t you, he said.

I plan everything, she said.

I know, he said.

He put his phone in his pocket and kept walking.

He passed the economics building entrance.

Marsh was standing outside it with his coffee.

Not waiting for Sean. Just existing in the specific way Marsh existed in outdoor spaces, which was the same way he existed in lecture rooms, fully present and without particular concern about what was expected of him.

He looked at Sean when he passed.

”Miller,” he said.

Sean stopped. ”Dr. Marsh.”

”Questions about the trip,” said Marsh. Not asking if he had them. Just opening the space.

”No questions,” said Sean.

Marsh held his coffee. ”I’ve nominated fourteen freshmen over eleven years,” he said. ”Eight of them had questions. Six of them didn’t.” He looked at Sean. ”You want to know which group did better.”

”The ones who didn’t,” said Sean.

Marsh almost did something with his expression. Not quite a smile. The thing that existed in the territory adjacent to a smile for someone who had decided long ago that smiling communicated things he didn’t always intend.

”The ones who asked good questions,” he said. ”That was four of the eight. The other four asked the wrong questions.” He drank his coffee. ”You not having questions at all is a different category.”

”What category,” said Sean.

”I don’t know yet,” said Marsh. ”That’s why I nominated you.”

He went back inside.

Sean stood for a moment in the space Marsh had been occupying.

Then he kept walking.

He called Olivia at noon.

She picked up between a session and a callback, which he could tell from the specific ambient sound on her end. Studio corridor. The distant noise of something playing back through a wall.

”You’re calling instead of texting,” she said. ”Either something good or something administrative.”

”Administrative,” he said.

”Tell me,” she said.

”Faculty trip in three weeks,” he said. ”Thursday to Sunday. Hill country. Inter-university outdoor program.”

A pause.

”Outdoor,” she said.

”Hill country retreat property,” he said.
