Urban God of Rebate: Infinite Returns Of Women And Powers

He woke Friday at six with the decision already made.

Not that he’d been undecided going to sleep. He’d been thinking it through since the atrium, since James had confirmed the sedan, since Max had sent the name and the case record and the specific information about two returned retainers that told Sean more about Isabelle Crane than fourteen years of professional history could.

The decision was this: he was going to let her get closer.

Not because he didn’t have options. He had options. Max could build a counter-profile that made Isabelle’s investigation significantly harder. Elena could identify legal frameworks that would complicate any findings being published. Sean could simply move his money in ways that obscured the pattern further, not perfectly, but well enough to make the picture she was building less clear.

All of those things would work.

None of them were right.

Because the problem wasn’t Isabelle Crane.

The problem was who hired her. And the only way to understand what the person who hired her actually wanted was to let the investigation run far enough that the shape of the wanting became visible.

Isabelle was going to find things. He couldn’t fully prevent that. But what she did with what she found was the variable that actually mattered.

He made coffee.

He texted Max.

Don’t interfere with her investigation. Don’t obscure the financial channels further. Let her look.

Max replied in six minutes. Not immediately, which meant he’d been awake but had sat with the message before responding.

You’re sure.

Yes, said Sean.

She’s very good, said Max. If we let her look she’s going to find the pattern properly.

I know, said Sean.

And you’re okay with that.

I’m okay with that.

A longer pause.

You have a plan, said Max.

I have the beginning of one.

Is the beginning good.

Sean looked at the city outside.

The beginning is always good, he typed. It’s the middle that requires work.

He bought coffee at the corner café at seven forty because he was going to Clara’s office at eight and Clara’s building had a coffee machine that worked technically and tasted like it worked technically and nothing else.

[8 dollars spent]

[Balance: $68,760,619]

[16 dollars received — 2x baseline]

[New Balance: $68,760,635]

The woman behind the counter, whose name was Sophie and who had been making Sean’s order without being asked for three months, set it down and looked at him.

”You look like someone who made a decision overnight,” she said.

He looked at her. ”How can you tell.”

”People who’ve made decisions have a specific quality in the morning,” she said. ”Less weight. Like they put something down.” She went back to the machine. ”People who haven’t made decisions yet have a different one.”

”What quality,” he said.

”Like they’re still carrying the thing,” she said. ”You’re not carrying it.”

He picked up the coffee.

”Thank you Sophie,” he said.

”Don’t thank me,” she said. ”Come back tomorrow.”

He walked to Clara’s building thinking about the specific quality of someone who had made a decision and what it looked like from the outside.

Business Insight without the name for it.

Sophie had it too.

Clara was at her desk when he arrived.

She looked at him and said immediately: ”You decided something.”

”Sophie said the same thing,” he said.

”Who’s Sophie,” she said.

”The corner café,” he said.

”You’re on first name terms with the corner café,” she said.

”I’m a regular customer,” he said.

”Most regular customers don’t know the barista’s name,” she said.

”I pay attention,” he said.

She held his gaze for a moment. Then she gestured at the chair across from her desk. ”Tell me.”

He told her the decision. Not the full context. The relevant parts. That the investigation was real, that the person behind it was someone he’d identified, and that his approach was going to be to let it run rather than block it.

Clara listened the way she always listened when something mattered. Still and present and processing rather than reacting.

When he finished she looked at the desk.

Then at him.

”You’re going to let someone investigate your finances,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

”While you’re in the middle of a funding round,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

”Sean,” she said.

”I know how it sounds,” he said.

”It sounds like something with a very specific logic that I’m going to need you to walk me through,” she said. ”Because from the outside it sounds like deliberately walking into something.”

”It is deliberately walking into something,” he said. ”The question is whether the something is what I think it is or something different.”

She held his gaze. ”And if it’s something different.”

”Then I’ll adjust,” he said.

She looked at him for a long moment with the evaluating attention that had been there since the first call, the specific quality of it that never fully went away.

”The person who hired her,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

”You know who it is,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

”Are you going to tell me,” she said.

He held her gaze.

”After the round closes,” he said. ”I don’t want it affecting how you run the next two weeks.”

She looked at him.

He looked back.

”That’s either very considerate or very frustrating,” she said.

”Both probably,” he said.

She exhaled. Not dramatically. The specific exhale of someone who had decided to trust a judgment call they couldn’t fully evaluate. ”Eight days.”

”Eight days,” he said.

”The Reeve terms,” she said, moving back to the desk. ”I sent my response last night. He replied this morning at six forty-seven which means he was working before seven AM which means he’s serious.”

”What did he say,” said Sean.

”He accepted the modified timeline,” she said. ”Three weeks to close, which lines up with Fischer’s parameters exactly.” She paused. ”I think Fischer talked to him before I sent the response. The acceptance came too fast for him to have thought about it overnight.”
