Urban God of Rebate: Infinite Returns Of Women And Powers

”Yes,” said Vanessa quietly.

”Yes,” said Makima.

Something settled between them that had been approaching since Saturday morning in the garden. Sean saw it land and said nothing about it.

==========

The afternoon had the quality he’d hoped for when he’d planned the weekend without planning the specifics.

The four of them walked in the early afternoon, which happened the way the Olivia and Vanessa walk on Friday had happened, through a convergence of people moving toward the same door at the same time rather than through any arrangement.

The valley paths behind the property went further than they’d explored. They found this out because Olivia kept going when the path seemed to end, found where it continued past a stile, and called back for the others.

They walked for an hour.

It was easy in the specific way that things were easy when the ground had been properly prepared. Thursday and Friday and Saturday had been the preparation. Sunday was what grew in it.

Makima walked with the pace of someone who had covered a great deal of ground in her life and had stopped needing to announce it. Vanessa walked with the structural attention she gave all spaces, occasionally noting something about the way the path was built into the hillside or how the stone walls ran.

Olivia walked beside Sean and talked about things that had nothing to do with the debut or the formation or anything that required her to be a specific version of herself. She talked about a book she’d been reading. About something Yuna had said before the weekend that had been funny in the specific way Yuna things were funny. About a restaurant she’d been to years ago with her mother that she’d been thinking about for no particular reason.

He listened and said things back.

At one point she took his hand without making it into anything and they walked like that for a while.

At another point Makima and Vanessa were walking slightly ahead of them and Olivia watched them and was quiet for a moment.

”They’re the same person,” she said. Quietly.

”No,” said Sean.

”The same kind of person,” said Olivia.

He looked at Makima and Vanessa walking with that particular synchrony, the ease of two people who had found something to respect in each other and were no longer managing the space between them.

”Yes,” he said. ”That’s right.”

His phone buzzed at three.

Sophie.

It’s Sunday and I keep thinking about the fourth question and how you said yes.

He was sitting in the garden on the bench by the south wall where Makima had been on Friday.

Still yes, he typed back.

Good, she said. I have seven questions I haven’t asked yet. I’m holding them.

Still, he said.

I know. I’m just telling you the count so you know I’m holding them deliberately and not forgetting. A pause. Dad asked me if I’d texted you. I said yes. He got a specific look.

What kind of specific look, Sean typed.

The kind where he’s trying not to seem like he’s hoping for something, she said. He’s bad at that. He’s very obvious about it and he thinks he’s being subtle. A pause. I told him the conversation was going well. He said okay and went back to whatever he was doing. He does that. Acts like he only half cares and then reorganizes his desk twice.

Sean looked at the hills from the garden bench.

’Reorganizes his desk twice,’ he thought.

He thought about what he knew about Richard Miller from Eleanor Vance’s outline. The careful accumulation of that charity donation. Seven years of watching from a distance.

’He cares,’ he thought. ’He’s just learned not to trust that caring will be received.’

Sophie, he typed.

Yeah.

Tell him I said the conversation is going well. Specifically from me.

A pause.

Okay, she said. That’ll mean something to him. Another pause. It means something to me too. A pause. Goodnight Sean. Or not goodnight because it’s three PM. Good afternoon.

Good afternoon Sophie, he said.

He put his phone in his pocket and sat in the garden for a while longer.

—--

He paid for Sunday dinner.

He planned this one deliberately.

Not the village shop. He called ahead to a restaurant in the nearest town, the proper one he’d identified from the market visit, the stone building with the wood interior that had been there long enough to know what it was. He arranged for Sunday evening, a table for four, and asked about the Sunday menu specifically.

The woman who took the booking had the warmth of someone who understood that people chose to come to places like hers for specific reasons and was glad about it.

James collected them at six thirty.

The drive was twenty minutes. The town was quiet in the specific way small towns were quiet on Sunday evenings, the week about to begin again somewhere in the distance.

The restaurant was exactly what he’d thought it would be.

They ate.

He paid.

[2,100 dollars spent — all three maximum bonds in proximity]

[Balance: $69,748,307]

[21,000 dollars received — 10x multi-bond rate active]

[New Balance: $69,769,307]

The conversation at dinner was different from the conversation at every other meal of the weekend. Not because anything had changed specifically. Because four people who had been learning each other for two and a half days had arrived at the version of themselves they were when the learning was mostly done and what remained was just existing.

Makima talked about the building’s original plans. The architect her father had found. The specific argument about the staircase that had lasted three months because her father believed in a wider staircase and the architect believed in a narrower one and her father had been right.

Olivia listened to this with the complete attention she gave things about other people’s families. She asked two questions that went directly to what mattered rather than what was polite.

Vanessa talked about her mother’s workroom, which Sean had heard on the Paris flight but which arrived differently in a room with three other people who hadn’t heard it.

Olivia looked at Vanessa when she finished and said, ”That’s how you learned to see things.”

”Yes,” said Vanessa.

”It shows,” said Olivia. Simply. The accurate observation she made without softening.

Vanessa held her gaze for a moment. ”Thank you.”

Makima was watching Olivia across the table with the expression she had when something had confirmed what she’d already known.

Sean ate his dinner and said very little and let the table be what it had become.

At one point all three of them looked at him simultaneously, not because he’d done anything but because he was there and because looking at him was apparently a thing all three of them did sometimes when nothing required it, and he looked back at all of them and the moment passed without requiring anything from it.
