Urban God of Rebate: Infinite Returns Of Women And Powers

James drove him at six forty.

The restaurant was on a street that had the quality of somewhere that had been chosen for exactly what it was, a block with the specific texture of a neighborhood that contained real life rather than curated life. Small buildings. A bakery that was already closed for the evening. A bookshop with its lights still on.

The restaurant had no sign outside.

Just a number on the door and a window that showed warm light inside and a quality that communicated nothing specific except that whatever happened inside had been happening there for a long time.

He arrived at seven exactly.

Clara was already there.

He’d expected that.

She was at a corner table. Not the standard corner table of a restaurant positioning guests for visibility. The actual corner, the one that felt like it had been carved out of the building itself, with the wall at her back and a clear view of the room and the specific quality of somewhere that belonged to a person rather than to a reservation.

She looked up when he came in.

And the thing that happened in her expression when she saw him was the thing he’d been watching build for months across documents and calls and a conference suite and a corridor and a restaurant that was for significant closes.

Not professional composure.

Not the forward-facing CFO energy.

Just her.

The person underneath everything else.

”Seven exactly,” she said.

”I was here at six fifty-eight,” he said.

”I was here at six forty-five,” she said.

”I know,” he said. ”I could tell from outside.”

She looked at him. ”You looked through the window.”

”I wanted to make sure I’d read the restaurant correctly from the address,” he said.

”Did you,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

He sat down across from her.

The restaurant was warm in the specific way of somewhere that had been warm for years, the warmth of absorbed use rather than installed atmosphere.

She held her wine glass.

She was wearing something that was exactly what she’d said. Comfortable. Not impressive. Something that was hers rather than professional, the version of herself that existed when nobody required her to be the CFO of anything.

She looked different from every other version of her he’d seen.

Not less. More. The specific more of someone who has stopped managing the distance between themselves and what’s visible.

”You had Thursday,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

”How was it,” she said. Not the professional version of the question. The actual version.

He thought about Harlow’s and a booth at the back and Sophie eating her food while watching everything.

”Something settled,” he said.

”Good settled or difficult settled,” she said.

”Both,” he said.

She held her gaze steadily for a moment. Then she nodded once and picked up the menu.

”The menu here,” she said. ”I want to tell you about it before you open it.”

”Go ahead,” he said.

”It changes every two weeks,” she said. ”Based entirely on what’s available locally. There’s never more than eight options. The chef believes in sufficiency rather than choice.” She paused. ”I’ve been coming here for three years and I’ve never ordered the same thing twice because it’s never been available twice.”

”You like that,” he said.

”I schedule everything else in my life,” she said. ”I like that this is outside my control.”

He looked at her.

She looked at the menu.

The waiter came. She ordered with the decisive efficiency she always brought to ordering, but in this context it had a different quality, the efficiency of someone who had genuinely thought about what they wanted rather than of someone moving through a process quickly.

He ordered something the waiter recommended, which the waiter offered with the specific warmth of someone who understood that the recommendation was the right approach in this restaurant.

When the waiter left Clara set her menu aside.

”The things I’ve been filing,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

”Can I ask them,” she said. ”Not all tonight. But some.”

”Ask,” he said.

She held her wine glass.

”The money,” she said. ”The position you came in with. I’ve run every model I know and it doesn’t generate the trajectory you’ve shown from any starting point I can explain.” She held his gaze. ”I’m not asking you to explain it. I’m asking whether there’s an explanation.”

”Yes,” he said.

”That’s the only answer you’re giving me tonight,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

She looked at him.

”Okay,” she said. The specific filing okay. ”Second question.”

”Go ahead,” he said.

”The way you read situations,” she said. ”I’ve watched you in enough rooms now. The Thomas Reeve read before the Fischer call. The Isabelle Crane situation. The Vertex shareholder analysis from a single overnight. The Hargreave connection on Meridian’s position.” She paused. ”It’s not just intelligence. It’s something else. Something more specific.”

”Yes,” he said.

”And that’s also not something you’re explaining tonight,” she said.

”Not fully,” he said.

She absorbed that.

”But someday,” she said.

”Yes,” he said. ”Someday.”

She held his gaze for a long moment.

Business Insight was running quietly.

What it found was the same thing it had found in every room Clara Weston had occupied since the first call. Someone who had built something she understood precisely and was protecting it with the specific determination of a person who had decided that understanding was its own form of ownership.

She wasn’t asking these questions to expose him.

She was asking them because she wanted to understand what she was feeling, and understanding for Clara required information, and some of the information she needed was about who Sean actually was.

”Third question,” he said.

She looked at him.

”You said you had questions,” he said. ”You’ve asked two.”

”I was pacing myself,” she said.

”Ask the third one,” he said.

She held her wine glass.

”Thursday,” she said. ”The meeting you mentioned. The one that wasn’t about Vertex.”

”Yes,” he said.
