Urban God of Rebate: Infinite Returns Of Women And Powers

Sean read it at his desk between his economics lecture and a cap table revision Clara had marked urgent that morning.

He rescheduled his three o’clock, he typed back.

His assistant said he needed time to think, said Max. Those are her exact words.

How does she know, said Sean.

Because he told her, said Max. He apparently said it out loud. Which is unusual. Ashford doesn’t explain himself to his assistant.

Sean held his phone.

A man who had run twelve acquisitions and built a fund over thirty years had received a clean finding and needed time to think.

That was either very good or something he hadn’t modeled.

Keep watching, he texted Max.

Already am, said Max.

—-----

He was reading Clara’s cap table revision at three forty when his phone rang.

Unknown number. New York area code.

He answered.

”Sean Miller.” Not a question. The voice was the specific measured quality of someone who had been in enough significant rooms that significant rooms required nothing extra from him.

Richard Ashford.

Sean set the cap table revision aside.

”Mr. Ashford,” he said.

”I’m going to say something to you directly,” said Ashford. ”Without my communications team and without counsel and without the professional framing I usually apply to conversations like this.”

”Okay,” said Sean.

A pause. Not hesitation. Just the specific pause of someone deciding how to start.

”Helen Park,” said Ashford.

Sean said nothing.

”She said something to me at the shareholder meeting,” said Ashford. ”She said I knew the difference between acquiring something real and extracting something real.” He paused again. ”I’ve been thinking about that since October.”

”And,” said Sean.

”And I hired a financial forensics investigator to build a picture that would give me an angle on you and the Vertex situation,” said Ashford. ”I did that because I don’t like not understanding things. And you were something I didn’t understand.”

”I know,” said Sean.

”The investigator called me an hour ago,” said Ashford. ”She told me the financial pattern is clean and that she was returning the retainer.” A pause. ”She also said something else.”

”What did she say,” said Sean.

”She said the picture she built didn’t support a case,” said Ashford. ”She said it supported the opposite.” He was quiet for a moment. ”She told me the person she’d been investigating had done everything I should have done with the Vertex situation and hadn’t done.”

Sean held his phone.

”She said that,” he said.

”She did,” said Ashford. ”She’s not wrong.” He exhaled, the specific exhale of someone putting something down they’d been carrying. ”I’m pulling the photograph. My communications team contacted the publication this morning to provide additional context. As of an hour ago that context has been withdrawn and the story has been killed.”

Sean looked at the window.

”Why,” he said.

”Because Helen Park was right,” said Ashford. ”And I’ve known Helen Park for twenty years and she’s been right about things before and I didn’t listen and I regretted it.” He paused. ”I’m not going to make the same mistake twice.”

Sean sat with that.

The specific quality of a man in his sixties who had built something real and had spent months trying to extract something real and had arrived at a Tuesday afternoon where the distance between those two things was visible enough to name.

”The Vertex round is going to close,” said Sean. ”The company is going to build what it’s been building. The compliance advantage is real and it’s going to compound.”

”I know,” said Ashford. ”I knew before I made the bid. That’s why I made it.” A pause. ”I would have taken it somewhere smaller.”

”Yes,” said Sean. ”You would have.”

A silence.

”You’re eighteen,” said Ashford.

”Yes,” said Sean.

”You blocked a thirty-year fund manager’s acquisition,” said Ashford. ”Then you let an investigator get close enough to read you properly. Then you apparently let that investigator become someone who works for you.” He paused. ”Where did you come from.”

”I’m a college freshman,” said Sean.

Something in Ashford’s voice shifted. Not quite humor. The closest thing to it the situation allowed. ”Right,” he said. ”Of course you are.”

A final pause.

”I’m not going to interfere with the Vertex round,” said Ashford. ”I want that said plainly. Whatever I think about the outcome of the vote, that’s done.”

”I appreciate that,” said Sean.

”Don’t appreciate it,” said Ashford. ”It’s just what’s correct.” He paused. ”Good luck with the round.”

He ended the call.

Sean set his phone down.

He looked at the cap table revision on his desk.

He thought about thirty years and twelve acquisitions and a clean finding from an investigator who returned retainers when the findings didn’t support what the client wanted.

He thought about Helen Park’s hand on Thomas’s arm after the vote.

Now we’re talking.

He picked up his phone.

He texted Max.

Ashford pulled the photograph and killed the publication story. Directly. His communications team.

Max replied in four minutes. Not immediately.

He called you, said Max.

Yes, said Sean.

What did he say, said Max.

He said Helen Park was right, said Sean.

A longer pause.

That’s not what I expected, said Max.

No, said Sean. It isn’t.

Is it over, said Max.

The Meridian angle is over, said Sean. Yes.

He texted Kwon.

The story has been killed. Ashford pulled the photograph. A pause. The publication won’t run anything.

Kwon’s reply came back in three minutes.

Killed, he said. Completely.

Completely, said Sean.

A longer pause than usual from Kwon. Long enough that Sean could feel the specific weight of someone who had been managing something tightly for two weeks and had just been told it was done.

Sean, said Kwon.

Yeah.

The debut is in six weeks, he said. The formation is ready. The label is ready. Yuna and Sori and Olivia are ready. A pause. What you just did. I want you to know what you just did.

I let the right person do her job, said Sean. That’s all.
