Urban God of Rebate: Infinite Returns Of Women And Powers

Something moved through her expression.

The professional composure exactly in place and behind it something that had been building across months of calls and documents and the specific quality of two people who had been through something together and had come out the other side still wanting to be in the same room.

”I know,” she said. Quietly.

”Do you,” he said.

”You showed up to board meetings prepared,” she said. ”You found the year eight review mechanism from secondary documents the night before a signing. You spent a Sunday answering my cap table questions with full analysis.” She paused. ”And you planned an estate house weekend for three people who mattered to you. I’ve been watching you for months. I know what significant regard from you looks like.”

He held her gaze.

”Clara,” he said.

”Yeah.”

”The Vertex round,” he said.

”Closing in twelve days,” she said.

”After it closes,” he said.

”I know,” she said. ”The complicated version of this conversation. The one that involves everything else.” She held his gaze steadily. ”I’ve been filing those questions too. I’m not afraid of them.”

”No,” he said. ”You’re not afraid of much.”

”I’m afraid of things I don’t understand,” she said. ”I’m not afraid of things I’ve seen enough of to understand.”

”And you’ve seen enough of me,” he said.

”I’ve seen enough to want to see more,” she said. ”That’s different from claiming to understand everything.”

He looked at her.

She looked back with the full version of her attention. The CFO and the person and everything else simultaneously.

He paid for the dinner when it arrived.

[680 dollars spent]

[Balance: $69,984,805]

[3,400 dollars received — 5x Clara favorability active]

[New Balance: $69,985,485]

The 5x multiplier firing for the first time.

Favorability above fifty. Something the system had been noting since the Vertex vote and was noting now in a restaurant with warm light and eight things on a changing menu.

He put his phone in his pocket without reacting to it.

Some things mattered more than the notification.

They finished dinner without hurrying.

The conversation moved through various things that were genuinely various, not all of them significant, some of them just two people finding out what ordinary conversation between them felt like when nothing professional was required.

She laughed twice. The real version. Short and genuine and entirely hers.

He said something that surprised her at one point and she looked at him for a moment with the expression she had when she was updating a model in real time.

”How do you do that,” she said.

”What,” he said.

”Say the specific true thing at the specific right moment,” she said.

”I pay attention to what’s actually there,” he said. ”Rather than what’s being presented.”

She held his gaze.

”I know,” she said. ”That’s the answer you always give and it’s always accurate and it’s never fully the explanation.”

”No,” he said. ”It’s not.”

”Someday,” she said.

”Someday,” he said.

At nine fifteen she looked at her watch with the specific precision she brought to time.

”I have a Saturday morning document review,” she said.

”I know,” he said.

”You know my schedule,” she said.

”I know your patterns,” he said. ”The schedule follows from the patterns.”

She looked at him.

”Walk me out,” she said.

They walked out together.

He paid the remainder when they left.

[520 dollars more]

[Balance: $69,984,965]

[2,600 dollars received — 5x active]

[New Balance: $69,987,565]

On the pavement she turned to face him.

The Friday evening was mild. The street had the quality of somewhere in the middle of its own life, people moving through it without particular awareness of two people standing on the pavement outside a restaurant with no sign.

She looked at him with the full version of her expression.

”The Vertex round closes in twelve days,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

”After which,” she said.

”After which,” he said.

”There will be another dinner,” she said. ”Not this restaurant. This one is for the first conversation. The next one is for whatever follows the first conversation.”

”You’re planning the sequence,” he said.

”I’m a CFO,” she said. ”I plan everything.”

”I know,” he said.

She held his gaze.

Then she stepped forward and kissed him.

Not the professional version of anything. Not the beginning of something or the end of something. Just the thing itself, warm and unhurried, with everything the months of calls and documents and board rooms and this specific Friday evening sitting inside it.

She pulled back.

Looked at him.

”Significant regard,” she said. With the corner of her mouth.

”Clara,” he said.

”I know,” she said. ”I know all of it. The complicated version and the simple version and everything between them.” She held his gaze. ”Twelve days.”

”Twelve days,” he said.

She stepped back.

”Saturday morning document review,” she said.

”Go,” he said.

She flagged a taxi. It pulled over because taxis pulled over for Clara Weston.

She got in.

The window came down.

”I’ll have the cap table update by Monday,” she said.

”I’ll read it Monday morning,” he said.

She looked at him for one more moment with the actual version of herself.

Then she smiled. Small and specific and entirely real.

The taxi pulled away.

Sean stood on the pavement.

He looked at the street.

He thought about a calendar invite sent at nine fifty-three PM from a taxi a long time ago that had said I don’t make optimistic models.

He thought about twelve days.

He texted Olivia.

Dinner was good.

She replied in two minutes. Good dinner or significant dinner.

Both, he said.

Both is good, she said. Regular evening number three is Saturday next week. I’ve confirmed what I want to do. A pause. It’s very ordinary. You’ll probably like it.

I’ll be there, he said.

I know, she said.

He texted Makima.

The dinner happened.

She replied in three minutes.

And, she said.

And something settled, he said.

Good, she said. Simply. Come down tomorrow. I’m making something.

You said you were going to stop making so much, he said.

I said I was going to make actual food, she said. That’s different.

It really isn’t, he said.

Sean, she said.

Yeah.

Come down tomorrow, she said.

Tomorrow, he said.

He put his phone in his pocket.

James was at the curb.

He got in.

The car moved through the Friday evening city and he looked out the window at everything that was continuing in exactly the way cities continued, entirely without reference to the specific weight of this Friday, the Thursday before it, the weekend before that.

He thought about an estate house in the valley.

He thought about Harlow’s on Clement Street.

He thought about a restaurant with no sign and eight things on a changing menu.

He thought about what had settled across the last two weeks.

Not everything. Some things couldn’t settle fully. Richard Miller and a wrong choice in 1985 and a pension that never arrived and a letter that stopped at the second paragraph. Those things lived in their own permanent territory.

But something had settled.

The specific thing that settled when you did what needed doing and had arrived on the other side of it.

He looked at his phone.

One more text.

From an address he hadn’t expected to hear from so soon.

Margaret Walsh.

Sean. I’ve been hoping you’d write. I’m glad you did. I knew your mother for thirty-four years before she moved away and I’ve thought about her every week since she died. I would very much like to know her son if that’s something you’re open to. No pressure either direction. But yes. I’m glad you wrote.

He read it three times.

Then he put his phone in his pocket.

He looked at the city outside the window.

The car moved through it.

He thought about Catherine Walsh-Miller.

He thought about what she would have said about this Friday evening, about the dinner and the letter and Margaret Walsh’s reply and the twelve days ahead.

She would have said something short.

Accurate.

He thought he knew what it would have been.

That’s more than enough to work with.

He almost smiled.

He went home.

He sat at his desk.

He looked at the whiteboard.

Eleanor Vance — Tuesday. Crossed out.

Thursday — Richard.

Sophie — seven questions.

He looked at the crossed-out line.

He looked at the other two.

He picked up the marker.

He crossed out Thursday — Richard.

Below it he wrote: Margaret Walsh.

He looked at Sophie — seven questions.

He crossed it out.

He wrote: Sophie — six questions. Dinner pending.

He capped the marker.

He looked at the board.

He stood in front of it for a moment.

Then he wrote one more thing at the bottom. Below everything.

Clara — 12 days.

He looked at all of it.

Then he capped the marker and turned off the lamp.
