Urban God of Rebate: Infinite Returns Of Women And Powers

”Was it the thing you’ve been carrying since ” she said. ”The thing you said you’d tell me about when we were in this room.”

He held her gaze.

”Yes,” he said.

”Tell me,” she said.

He told her.

Not the full picture. The relevant parts.

Richard Miller’s call. Eleanor Vance’s file. The Walsh section and what it contained. The weekend at the estate house that had been about more than it looked like from the outside. Thursday at Harlow’s and a booth at the back and Sophie asking the load-bearing question.

He told her without editorializing. Just what happened and what he’d found.

She listened the way she always listened when something mattered. Still and present and absorbing rather than reacting. Her wine glass held but not drunk. Her eyes on his face.

When he finished she was quiet for a moment.

”The stopped letter,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

”She wanted him to know,” said Clara.

”Yes,” he said.

”And you told him,” she said.

”I told the table,” he said. ”Both of them. His daughter was there.”

”Sophie,” she said. She’d been filing names.

”Yes,” he said.

Clara looked at the table briefly.

”Your mother built you,” she said. Not as a sentiment. As an accurate observation. ”Whatever she wanted him to know about who she was and what she’d done, the answer to it is you.”

He held her gaze.

”That’s what Richard said,” he said.

”He’s right,” said Clara. ”That’s not me being kind. That’s me noting a fact.”

He looked at her.

”You said you don’t know if you forgive him,” she said.

”I didn’t say that,” he said.

”No,” she said. ”But you didn’t say you do.”

”No,” he said.

”What are you saying,” she said.

He thought about what Catherine would have said.

Not nothing. Not everything. What it is.

”That it’s not nothing and it’s not everything,” he said. ”And that’s an honest place to work from.”

Clara held his gaze.

”Yes,” she said quietly. ”That’s an honest place to work from.”

The food arrived. They were quiet while the waiter set it down with the care of someone who understood that the restaurant required care.

They ate.

The conversation found its own direction after the Richard conversation had been allowed to land. Not away from it. Through it, the way conversations moved when something real had been said and was now in the room and could be worked around rather than avoided.

She told him about the deal that had fallen through eighteen months ago. The one she didn’t talk about at work. He’d known the outline of it from a previous conversation. She gave him more of it tonight, the specific version that lived in the middle of the story rather than at the edges.

A deal she’d built the financial model for. That had collapsed at the last stage because of something that had nothing to do with the model and everything to do with the people involved. The specific feeling of watching something you’d built with complete precision be dismantled by factors entirely outside the model.

”Is that why you joined Vertex,” he said.

She held her fork.

”I joined Vertex because I wanted to be close to the thing being built rather than the transaction around it,” she said. ”But yes. The deal collapsing was part of what made me understand the difference between those two things.” She paused. ”I wanted to build something I could see.”

”And Vertex,” he said.

”I could see it every day,” she said. ”Three hundred and forty clients. Eighty-seven percent renewal. Every number I built had a corresponding real thing behind it.” She paused. ”That’s what I missed in the previous role. The corresponding real thing.”

Sean looked at her.

He thought about a paragraph in a document about trust not being transferable.

He thought about what she’d said at the time.

That’s why I almost took it out.

People do that. Take out the truest things because they feel too personal for the context.

”Clara,” he said.

”Yeah.”

”The thing you said in the Vertex document,” he said. ”Trust not being transferable.”

”I know which paragraph you mean,” she said.

”It’s how you work,” he said. ”Not just in that document. It’s how you operate. You don’t transfer trust earned in one context to another just because the person is the same. You rebuild it from the actual evidence.”

She held his gaze.

”Yes,” she said.

”That’s why you’ve been filing things about me,” he said. ”Not because you’re suspicious. Because that’s how you extend trust properly.”

”Yes,” she said.

”And,” he said.

She looked at him directly.

”And the file is in good shape,” she said. Simply.

He looked at her across the corner table in the restaurant she hadn’t taken anyone to.

He thought about months of calls and documents and a conference suite and a corridor and a restaurant that was for significant closes and a calendar invite sent at nine fifty-three PM from a taxi.

He thought about what had been building across all of it.

”Clara,” he said.

”Yeah.”

”You scheduled this,” he said.

”I schedule everything,” she said.

”You scheduled this specifically,” he said. ”Three weeks from a call that could have been about the round and stayed about the round. You scheduled it because you wanted the conversation we’re having right now.”

She held his gaze.

”I scheduled it because I wanted an evening that had nothing professional in it,” she said. ”With someone I’d been working alongside for months and had developed.” She paused. ”Significant regard for.”

”Significant regard,” he said.

”I’m not someone who overuses words,” she said.

”I know,” he said.

”Significant is accurate,” she said. ”I considered the alternatives. Significant is the right one.”

He looked at her.

She looked at him.

The restaurant was doing its Friday evening things around them. Other tables in other conversations. The wine. The food. The specific warmth of somewhere that had been itself for a long time.

”I have significant regard for you too,” he said.
