Urban God of Rebate: Infinite Returns Of Women And Powers

I want to be there, said Sean. Whether she’s there is her decision.

A longer pause.

You’re going to let her see you on purpose, said Max.

I’m going to attend a panel discussion about corporate governance, said Sean.

That’s the same thing, said Max.

It really isn’t, said Sean.

He could almost hear Max’s expression through the phone.

Amara says hello, said Max. She read your text exchange this morning.

Sean looked at his phone.

You showed Amara our texts, he said.

She was already looking at my phone, said Max. She reorganized my apps and saw the notification.

She reorganized your apps, said Sean.

She said the original layout was inefficient, said Max. She may not be wrong. A pause. She also said, and I’m quoting directly: tell Sean that letting someone find the pattern is only smart if you understand the pattern better than they do.

Sean read that twice.

He texted back: Tell her she’s right.

A pause. Then Max: She said she knows. She also said the eighth question is very close now.

He put his phone in his pocket and went to his lecture.

He told Olivia that evening.

Not the full plan. The relevant parts. The publication, the four-day window, the Monday panel.

She was in her kitchen when he called, the specific background sounds of her apartment in the evening, something on the stove, Yuna’s voice audible and then not audible the way voices were when someone moved between rooms.

She listened to all of it.

Then she said: ”You’re going to sit in a room where she can see you voluntarily.”

”Yes,” he said.

”And your theory is that letting her get close enough to read you properly changes what she does with what she finds,” said Olivia.

”That’s the theory,” he said.

”What if she reads you wrong,” said Olivia.

”Then I adjust,” he said.

”You keep saying that,” she said.

”Because it keeps being true,” he said.

She was quiet for a moment. The stove sounds in the background. ”The publication. Five days until they run the story if there’s no comment.”

”Four now,” he said.

”And you want four days,” she said.

”I need to understand what happens Monday before I know what to do with the four days,” he said.

”Okay,” she said. Not because she was fully convinced. Because she’d decided to trust the logic even when she couldn’t follow all of it.

”Olivia,” he said.

”Yeah.”

”The debut,” he said. ”What Kwon said about the formation running better. About you being different in rehearsal.”

A brief pause. ”He told you that.”

”Yes,” he said.

She was quiet for a moment. ”I decided something this week,” she said. ”When you told me about the investigation. About the photograph.” She paused. ”I decided that I wasn’t going to let it be a thing I carry around. The worry about it. I decided to just do the work and let you handle the rest.”

”And,” he said.

”And Kwon is right,” she said. ”When I put something down and just work the work gets better.” A pause. ”It’s annoying that you being right about something affects my rehearsal quality.”

”I’m not right yet,” he said. ”I’m just moving.”

”Same thing,” she said.

”It really isn’t,” he said.

She laughed. The short genuine version.

”Monday,” she said.

”Monday,” he said.

”Call me after,” she said.

”I will,” he said.

She hung up.

Monday arrived with the specific quality of something Sean had been building toward since Friday.

The panel discussion was at the university’s business faculty building at two PM. He arrived at one fifty-three.

The room held about sixty people. Business faculty, graduate students, a cluster of industry professionals who’d come specifically for the governance discussion. Clara was at the front already, speaking to the panel moderator with the forward-facing professional energy she brought to rooms that required her.

Sean sat near the middle. Left side. From this position he could see the room’s full depth, the entrance door, and the front panel table.

He bought a coffee from the cart outside the room before sitting.

[6 dollars spent]

[Balance: $68,760,635]

[12 dollars received — 2x baseline]

[New Balance: $68,760,647]

He looked at the room.

She was there.

Different from the atrium. Better positioned this time. Third row from the back, slight angle that gave her sight lines to both the panel and the room without being obvious about which she was watching.

Dark hair pulled back the same way. The thin-framed glasses she hadn’t been wearing in the atrium photograph he’d seen. A notebook rather than a laptop today, which meant she was here to observe rather than work, the specific choice of someone who didn’t want a screen creating distance between her eyes and the room.

She was reading the room.

She was also, Sean noticed, reading him specifically.

Not continuously. The professional version. Brief intervals that looked like someone’s gaze naturally moving. But the intervals had a pattern and the pattern centered on him with a frequency that was above what casual interest would produce.

She’d identified him before he sat down.

That meant she’d been watching the entrance.

He’d expected that.

He didn’t look directly at her.

He looked at the front of the room where Clara was taking her seat at the panel table. She caught his eye from the front and gave him the small specific nod that meant she’d registered his presence and they’d talk after.

The panel started.

The corporate governance professor spoke first. Academic in the way academics spoke about practical things, the distance of someone who studied situations rather than lived them. Interesting but removed.

The fund manager spoke second. More specific. He’d been in three contested situations across twenty years and he talked about them with the particular texture of someone who had actually been in the rooms.

Clara spoke third.

She was the best of the three.

Not because she was more articulate. Because she said the specific things that were true rather than the general things that were defensible. When the moderator asked about the Vertex situation directly she answered directly. Not evasively. Not managing the narrative. Just telling the accurate version.
