Urban God of Rebate: Infinite Returns Of Women And Powers

At one point she said: ”The document that changed the shareholder count wasn’t written to persuade people. It was written to give people who already believed something accurate to point to. That distinction matters. Persuasion is fragile. Confirmation of an existing conviction is structural.”

The room was quiet for a moment.

Sean felt the shift in the room’s attention. Sixty people registering that something true had been said.

He felt something else too.

Isabelle Crane had stopped looking at him.

She was looking at Clara.

Writing something in her notebook.

Not the quick notes of someone capturing a quote. Something longer. The focused writing of someone who had just received information that shifted the picture they’d been building.

’She didn’t know about Clara,’ he thought. ’Not at this level. She had the professional connection but not what Clara actually is to the situation.’

The panel continued.

Q&A at the end. Three questions from the audience, all competent, none of them the question Sean would have asked.

He didn’t ask a question.

He waited.

When the panel ended and the room began its post-event dispersal he stood and made his way toward the coffee cart that had been moved inside for the networking portion.

He felt Isabelle Crane begin moving at the same time.

Not toward him directly. Toward the same general area. The specific indirect approach of someone maintaining plausible casual movement.

He bought a coffee.

[6 dollars spent]

[Balance: $68,760,647]

[12 dollars received — 2x baseline]

[New Balance: $68,760,659]

He turned.

She was six feet away.

Not looking at him. Looking at the panel table where Clara was speaking to the moderator.

He looked at her directly.

She felt it.

Turned.

They looked at each other.

Not the brief atrium version. This one held. Both of them acknowledging what was happening without naming it. The specific quality of two people who had been reading each other from across various rooms for a week and were now close enough that the pretense of not having done so was available to neither of them.

She was the first to speak.

”You were at the Vertex shareholder meeting,” she said. Conversational tone. The opening of someone who had decided direct was better than indirect now that they were in the same room at close range.

”Yes,” he said.

”Clara Weston is very good,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

”The document she described,” said Isabelle. ”The shareholder analysis. You were involved in that.”

Not a question.

”I was involved in the situation,” he said.

She held his gaze. ”That’s a careful answer.”

”It’s an accurate one,” he said.

Something moved through her expression. Not suspicion. More like recalibration. The specific internal adjustment of someone whose model of a situation was changing in real time.

”You knew I’d be here,” she said.

”I knew this was a public event,” he said.

”That’s also a careful answer,” she said.

”I’m a careful person,” he said.

She looked at him with the brown eyes that had fourteen years of financial forensics behind them and the specific quality of someone who was deciding something in real time.

”Isabelle Crane,” she said.

”Sean Miller,” he said.

She almost smiled. The compressed version of it. ”You already knew my name.”

”You already knew mine,” he said.

”I’ve known yours for three weeks,” she said.

”I’ve known yours for four days,” he said.

She held his gaze. ”Four days is faster than I expected.”

”Max is very good,” he said.

”Your researcher,” she said. ”Yes. He is.” She tilted her head slightly. ”You’re not angry.”

”Why would I be angry,” he said.

”Most people who find out they’re being investigated are angry,” she said. ”Or nervous. Or both.” She held his gaze. ”You’re neither.”

”I know what I am,” he said. ”What I’m not sure about is why you’re looking.”

She was quiet for a moment.

”That’s the right question,” she said.

”I know,” he said.

She looked at her coffee cup. Then at him. ”I can’t answer that here.”

”I know that too,” he said.

She studied him for a moment with the full weight of fourteen years.

”You’re going to suggest a meeting,” she said.

”I’m going to let you decide whether to suggest one,” he said.

The corner of her mouth moved. Not a smile exactly. The expression of someone who had been surprised by something small.

She held her gaze for another moment.

Then she reached into her jacket and produced a card. Not the performative version. Just took it out and held it out and he took it.

”The funding round is going to close in three weeks,” she said. ”Before it does I’d like to have a conversation.” She paused. ”Not the one my client hired me to have.”

Sean looked at the card.

”Different question,” he said.

”Different question,” she confirmed.

Clara appeared at his shoulder.

She looked at Isabelle. Then at Sean. At the card in his hand. At the specific quality of two people who had just finished saying something that mattered.

”Clara Weston,” she said to Isabelle.

”I know,” said Isabelle. ”Your panel was very good. The distinction between persuasion and confirmation was the most accurate thing said today.”

Clara looked at her for a moment with the evaluating attention.

”You were here for the panel,” said Clara.

”Partly,” said Isabelle Crane.

She nodded once, the specific nod of someone who had gotten what she came for and knew it, and moved toward the exit with the unhurried efficiency of someone who had made a decision and was done being in the room.

Sean watched her go.

Clara looked at the card in his hand.

”Who is that,” she said.

”Someone I’ve been expecting,” he said.

”She was watching you through the whole panel,” said Clara.

”I know,” he said.

”And you let her,” said Clara.

”Yes,” he said.

Clara looked at the door Isabelle had walked through.

Then at him.

”Eight days,” she said.

”Eight days,” he said.

She held his gaze for a moment with everything that was in that phrase.

”Whatever this is,” she said. ”Handle it before then.”

”That’s the plan,” he said.

She held his gaze one more moment.

Then she turned and went back to the front of the room where the moderator had another question and the networking was continuing and the ordinary world was proceeding exactly as it always proceeded.

Sean looked at Isabelle Crane’s card.

One side. Name, phone number, email. Nothing else.

He put it in his pocket.

He texted Max.

She introduced herself.

Max replied in under a minute.

She introduced herself.

Yes, said Sean.

That’s not what investigators do, said Max.

No, said Sean. It isn’t.

What does it mean, said Max.

Sean looked at the door.

It means she’s already decided something, he typed. I just don’t know what yet.

A pause. Then: Sean.

Yeah.

Amara read that too.

Tell her I know, said Sean.

She says: the pattern you understand better than they do isn’t the financial one. A pause. She said you’d know what that means.

He looked at the message.

He thought about Isabelle Crane’s face when Clara spoke about confirmation versus persuasion. The notebook. The specific recalibration he’d watched happen in real time.

He did know what it meant.

He put his phone in his pocket and finished his coffee and walked out into the Monday afternoon.

Four days.

He had four days and a card in his pocket and a decision Isabelle Crane had made that she hadn’t finished explaining yet.

It was enough to work with.

It was always enough to work with.
