Urban God of Rebate: Infinite Returns Of Women And Powers

He chose a restaurant called Harlow’s.

Not because he knew it. He’d walked past it twice in the last month, the kind of place that existed on specific streets in specific cities that understood their purpose was to hold conversations rather than to announce themselves. Dark wood, proper tablecloths, the lighting calibrated for actual conversation rather than for being photographed.

He texted Richard at eight Thursday morning.

Harlow’s on Clement Street. Noon. Booth at the back, I’ll have it reserved.

Richard replied in two minutes.

I’ll be there.

He texted Sophie separately.

You said you wanted to come. Noon at Harlow’s on Clement. James can collect you at eleven thirty if you give me your address.

A longer pause from Sophie.

Then an address. And: I’ve been ready since Tuesday.

He texted James the details.

Then he made coffee and sat at his desk and looked at the whiteboard.

Thursday — Richard.

He thought about Eleanor’s file.

He thought about the stopped letter.

He thought about what you did with the information that a person had wanted someone to know something and hadn’t known how to say it. Whether you carried that information or whether you put it somewhere it could be useful.

He didn’t know yet.

He would know after noon.

James collected Sophie at eleven thirty-two, which meant she’d been ready at eleven twenty at the latest.

Sean was already in the car.

She got in with the specific energy he’d built a picture of from weeks of texts, forward and direct and carrying no particular performance about any of it. Fifteen years old. Brown skin, her mother’s wide eyes from the photograph Eleanor had found, black hair in a practical braid that communicated the same thing Mia’s hair communicated, someone who had decided hair was not where her attention lived.

She looked at Sean.

He looked at her.

A moment passed where both of them were doing the same thing, checking whether the person in front of them matched the version they’d built from words on a screen.

”Hi,” she said.

”Hi,” he said.

She settled into the seat beside him and looked out the window as James pulled away from the curb.

”You look like the photograph,” she said. ”The one from the Vertex meeting that Sarah Coleman used in the article.”

”You found that photograph,” he said.

”I find everything,” she said. ”It’s a skill.” She paused. ”You look like your mother.”

Sean looked at her.

She was still looking out the window. ”There’s a photograph of her in the genealogy records Dad had pulled. The company made a report with photographs. I found it in his files.” She paused. ”I went looking after he told me about you. He doesn’t know I found it.” She glanced at him. ”She was very striking.”

”Yes,” said Sean.

”She looked like someone who knew exactly what she thought about everything,” said Sophie.

Sean looked at the city moving past the window.

”She did,” he said.

Sophie was quiet for a moment. Then: ”Is that weird. That I found her photograph.”

”No,” said Sean.

”I thought it might be,” she said. ”I looked for it specifically because I wanted to know who she was before I met you. It felt like something I should do.”

”It’s not weird,” he said. ”It’s thorough.”

She pressed her lips together. The specific movement of someone containing something. ”That’s the same thing you said about my questions being specific versus invasive.”

”It’s consistently true,” he said.

She looked at him with a direct evaluating quality that belonged to someone who had been assessing people carefully for fifteen years and had gotten very good at it.

”You’re going to be okay today,” she said. Not a question. A statement she was making to confirm something she’d already assessed.

”Yes,” he said.

”He’s going to be nervous,” she said. ”He’s been different since Tuesday when you texted. He went for a walk that evening which he only does when he’s processing something significant. He came back and made tea which he also never does.” She paused. ”He’s been building toward this for a long time. He doesn’t know how to do it normally so he’s just been whatever the opposite of normal is.”

”What’s the opposite of normal for him,” said Sean.

”Very quiet and very organized,” said Sophie. ”His desk is immaculate right now. It means he doesn’t know what to do with his hands.”

Sean looked at her.

”You study him,” he said.

”He’s interesting,” she said. ”And I didn’t have a lot to do when I was younger than I do now, so I paid attention to the people around me very carefully.” She paused. ”He’s a good person. He made a bad decision a long time ago and he knows it and he’s been living around that knowledge for a long time.” She held Sean’s gaze. ”I’m not telling you how to feel about it. I’m just telling you what I’ve observed.”

Sean held her gaze.

”Fifteen,” he said.

”Almost sixteen,” she said.

”Almost sixteen,” he said.

She looked back out the window. ”Are you going to tell me I’m too young to be saying things like that.”

”No,” he said.

”Good,” she said. ”That would have been annoying.”

They drove the rest of the way in the specific comfortable quiet of two people who had established enough already that the silence didn’t need filling.

=====

Harlow’s at noon was half full in the way good restaurants were half full at noon on Thursdays, the lunch crowd building but not yet crowded, the ambient noise at exactly the level Sean had expected from two walk-pasts.

He’d reserved the booth at the back.

He and Sophie arrived at eleven fifty-three.

Richard was already there.

He was sitting in the booth with his coat folded beside him and a glass of water he hadn’t touched, and he was looking at the entrance when they came through the door, which meant he’d been watching the door, which meant he’d been there long enough to establish a position from which he could watch the door.
