Urban God of Rebate: Infinite Returns Of Women And Powers

Makima was in the kitchen. Not cooking. Just being in the kitchen in the way she was sometimes in kitchens when a kitchen was good enough to simply be in.

Sean moved between them without agenda.

He sat with Olivia for a while while she went through records and told him things about each one, some of which he knew and some of which he didn’t, and she told them both ways with equal engagement because Olivia was someone who said things because she found them interesting rather than because she needed him to already know them.

He sat with Vanessa for a while and they read in the same space in the specific comfortable way of two people who had established that shared silence was its own form of conversation.

He made tea for Makima and brought it to the kitchen and sat at the kitchen table and she sat across from him and they talked about nothing in particular for twenty minutes in exactly the way they talked at home, the easy rhythm of it entirely unchanged by the different walls around them.

He paid for the afternoon tea things he’d picked up at the market.

The passive resonance update arrived at five.

Sean looked at the number.

$575,568 in two days from proximity alone.

He thought about the four days.

He thought about what the final passive total was going to be by Monday morning.

He put his phone down.

—--

Saturday dinner.

He’d gone to the village shop before it closed at six, a more significant shop than the market stall, and had bought things without a list because Makima had the list and Makima was at the house, which meant he was buying on instinct, which produced imperfect results and also the specific small comedy of arriving back with three things she’d asked for and four things she hadn’t that he’d added because they seemed correct.

She went through the bags with the expression she had for imperfect but well-intentioned outcomes.

”These three,” she said, setting them aside, ”are what I said. These four,” she set them in a different pile, ”are what you thought of.”

”I can go back,” he said.

”No,” she said. ”I can use what you brought.” She held up one of his additions. ”Where did you find this.”

”Back of the shop,” he said.

She looked at it. ”It’s good actually.”

”Thank you,” he said.

”Don’t be smug about it,” she said.

”I’m not being smug,” he said.

”You’re being slightly smug,” said Olivia, from the table.

”I found one good thing,” he said.

”One out of four,” said Vanessa, from the doorway.

”That’s twenty-five percent,” said Olivia.

”Which is better than zero,” said Sean.

”Marginally,” said Vanessa.

He paid for the dinner shopping.

[1,240 dollars spent — all three maximum bonds in proximity]

[Balance: $69,490,447]

[12,400 dollars received — 10x multi-bond rate active]

[New Balance: $69,502,847]

He sat at the table while Makima cooked, Olivia occasionally handing things across without being asked in a way that suggested a kitchen rhythm she’d figured out sometime during the weekend, and Vanessa in the doorway with wine, contributing precise observations about the cooking that Makima received with the specific acknowledgment of someone who found the observations accurate rather than intrusive.

Three different relationships with the same kitchen.

All of them real.

”The one thing he found,” said Olivia, later, when they were eating and the thing he’d found was on the table.

”It’s good,” said Vanessa.

”It’s very good,” said Makima. ”I don’t know how he found it.”

”I was looking,” said Sean.

”That’s not usually how it works,” said Olivia.

”What do you mean,” he said.

”Most people don’t find things even when they’re looking,” said Olivia. ”You find things. It’s different.”

”She means Business Insight,” said Makima, to her food.

”I mean generally,” said Olivia. ”But yes also that.”

Vanessa looked at Sean across the table. The expression she had when she was filing something alongside the other things she’d filed.

”The bowl,” she said.

”What about it,” he said.

”You didn’t suggest it,” she said. ”You just paid for it when I chose it.”

”Yes,” he said.

”That’s the thing,” she said. ”You don’t suggest what people should want. You pay attention to what they actually want and then you make it possible.”

The table was quiet for a moment.

”That’s the most accurate description of him I’ve heard,” said Olivia.

”It took me a weekend,” said Vanessa.

”It took me a year,” said Makima. ”And I only said it approximately.”

”You said it perfectly,” said Sean.

”I said it simply,” said Makima. ”Which is different.”

”Not to me,” he said.

Makima held his gaze for a moment.

”Eat your dinner,” she said.

He ate his dinner.

======

After dinner the sitting room settled into its Saturday evening version.

Olivia had found a record she liked and had put it on the player in the corner of the room, something that existed at the specific volume that allowed conversation rather than replacing it, and she’d returned to her position on the large sofa with the blanket and the feet tucked under.

Vanessa had the bowl on the side table and was reading again.

Makima had her book.

Sean sat near the fire and looked at all three of them in the same room doing the same thing they’d been doing individually all week, existing, and felt the specific thing he’d been trying to name since Thursday.

It wasn’t complicated when he finally found the name for it.

It was home.

Not the building on the street where Makima managed the floors and Danny came for football and the flowers were always the third set. That was also home. This was a different kind. The kind that lived in people rather than in addresses.

He’d been building it for a year without calling it anything.

He was sitting inside it now.

His phone buzzed.

Sophie again.

I’m going to ask the fourth question.

He looked at the message.

Go ahead, he typed.

A pause. Longer than usual from Sophie, who usually sent things quickly.

Then:

Are you happy.

He sat with that for a moment.

He looked at the fire.

He looked at Makima with her book.

He looked at Olivia with her blanket and her feet tucked under and the record playing something quiet and specific in the corner.

He looked at Vanessa with the bowl from the market on the table beside her and whatever she was reading on her phone.

He thought about Eleanor Vance’s full picture arriving Tuesday and what it was going to require him to decide.

He thought about Richard Miller and a phone call and forty-eight hours of something he was still processing.

He thought about all of it.

Then he typed back.

Yes, he said. Right now. Yes.

A long pause from Sophie.

Then: Good. And then a moment later: That was the load-bearing question. The rest of them can wait.

He looked at that.

They can wait, he agreed.

He put his phone in his pocket.

Olivia looked up from the sofa.

”Sophie,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

”What did she ask,” said Olivia.

He thought about whether to say it.

”Whether I was happy,” he said.

The sitting room was quiet for a moment.

”What did you tell her,” said Makima, without looking up from her book.

”Yes,” he said.

Makima turned a page.

”Good,” she said. ”That was the right answer.”

Outside the valley did its Saturday night things in the dark. The fire did what fires did in old stone houses. The passive resonance ran in the background at $11,991 an hour without requiring anything from anyone.

And the sitting room held them all.
