Urban God of Rebate: Infinite Returns Of Women And Powers

Two weeks arrived the way the important ones always did.

Not slowly. Not dramatically. Just suddenly present, the way a deadline moved from abstract to real overnight without announcing the transition.

Sean dressed at six AM on the showcase day.

Dark jacket. White shirt. Nothing that communicated anything except that he understood the room he was walking into.

James was outside at six forty.

”Showcase this morning,” said James, when Sean got in.

”Yes,” said Sean.

”What time does it start,” said James.

”Nine,” said Sean. ”Industry stakeholders. Label internal. Three streaming contacts.”

James nodded once and pulled into the morning traffic.

They drove in the specific quiet that had developed between them over months. Not silence. Something more particular. The quiet of two people who had been in enough cars together that the car itself had become a kind of working space.

”James,” said Sean.

”Sir.”

”The regular rate today,” said Sean. ”There’s no reason for you to wait outside for four hours.”

”I’ll be outside,” said James.

Sean looked at him.

”I’ll be outside,” said James again. Not argument. Just the one sentence that covered everything it needed to cover.

Sean looked at the window.

”Alright,” he said.

The showcase venue was a mid-size room inside the label’s building that had been set up to look like something between a rehearsal space and a proper stage.

Intimate by design. The label understood that the showcase’s job was not to replicate the debut. Its job was to give the people in the room something specific to carry into the debut.

Kwon was already there when Sean arrived. Standing near the back of the room with his phone in his hand, doing the specific kind of standing that wasn’t waiting. It was monitoring.

He looked at Sean when he walked in.

”They’re in the prep room,” said Kwon. ”Forty minutes.”

”Formation ready,” said Sean.

”Formation has been ready for three weeks,” said Kwon. ”I’m not worried about the formation.” He looked back at the stage. ”I’m watching the room fill up and thinking about what the right people seeing this today means for the opening weekend numbers.”

Sean looked at the room.

Thirty-two people. Mostly the label’s internal stakeholders. Marketing. Distribution. The A&R team who had signed the group. The three streaming contacts were near the front, which meant someone at the label understood the algorithm conversation mattered more than the executive conversation.

Thomas Reeve was in the third row.

Sean hadn’t expected that.

He looked at Kwon.

”Fischer’s team confirmed Thomas at nine last night,” said Kwon. ”He asked if he could attend. I said yes because I didn’t have a reason to say no and because you’ve never indicated he was a problem.”

”He’s not a problem,” said Sean.

”Then we’re fine,” said Kwon.

Sean looked at the third row.

Thomas was sitting with his jacket folded on the seat beside him, reading something on his phone. The specific posture of someone who had learned how to be in rooms before they started without performing the act of waiting.

Sean walked over.

Thomas looked up.

”Sean,” he said. Not surprised. Something closer to settled.

”Thomas,” said Sean. He sat down two seats away. ”I didn’t know you were coming.”

”Laurent’s team mentioned the showcase,” said Thomas. ”I asked Kwon. He confirmed.” A pause. ”I wanted to see what you’d built.”

”I didn’t build the formation,” said Sean. ”Kwon built the formation. Olivia built the formation.”

”I know,” said Thomas. ”That’s what I wanted to see.” He folded his phone away. ”I’ve been in infrastructure investment for twenty-two years. I’ve funded things and watched them get built and watched them arrive at the moment they were built for. That moment is specific. I like being in the room for it when I can.”

Sean looked at the stage.

”This isn’t the moment,” he said. ”The debut is the moment. This is fourteen days before.”

”The fourteen days before is the room I always want to be in,” said Thomas. ”The debut is proof. The showcase is the last time you can see the thing clearly before it becomes what it becomes.” He paused. ”After the debut everything is different. The way you see it changes. The way everyone sees it changes.” He looked at Sean. ”Right now it’s still just true.”

Sean held that.

He thought about Olivia on the floor with Yuna and the dumplings. The thing that was still just true before it became the thing it was going to become.

”Yes,” he said. ”That’s right.”

Thomas nodded once.

They sat in the comfortable quiet of two people looking at the same empty stage and understanding what it was about to hold.

—-

At nine fifteen the lights adjusted.

The room settled.

Kwon moved to the wall.

Sean sat four rows back, slightly left of center.

The stage was empty for a moment.

Then Yuna walked out first.

She was twenty years old, five foot six, with the particular kind of presence that filled a room differently than height or beauty alone explained. Wide-set dark eyes. A quality of attention in her face that was completely genuine, the kind you could see from the fourth row. She walked to her position without looking at the audience, which wasn’t avoidance. It was the specific concentration of someone who knew exactly where she needed to be.

Sori came out second.

Twenty-one. Compact and precise in everything she did. The way she moved to her mark was the way she did everything, clean and without wasted motion, the sharp intelligence of someone who had studied what worked and had removed everything that didn’t. She looked at the audience once, briefly, the way a person checks a room before they decide what it requires.

Then Olivia.

She walked out last.

Sean had seen Olivia in every context the past eight months had offered. The showcase room where he first understood what she was. The apartment corridor after the contract signing. The window seat on Saturday evening with noodles and thirty-four days written in his head.
