Chapter 23: Chapter 23: The Young Matron’s Final Stubbornness

It was past midnight. The young woman, Bai Jie, leaned on the sofa with one hand, her thin, red nightgown doing little to hide her graceful figure.

If this were before the apocalypse, she would have been asleep long ago.

But tonight, she found it exceptionally hard to sleep.

It wasn’t that she couldn’t sleep, but that she hadn’t had a proper meal in days.

The feeling of gnawing hunger was like bitter seawater, churning endlessly in her stomach with no sign of stopping.

This intense hunger was a torment, making it nearly impossible for her to fall asleep.

If not for the two loaves of bread the man across the hall had given her a couple of days ago, she might not have made it through yesterday.

In truth, she had been waiting for news of her husband, Wang Shen, all these days.

But ever since he went out to play cards the night before last, he had never returned.

She, on the other hand, had happened to be off work that day and stayed home, which was how she had survived.

By now, she had a premonition. Her good-for-nothing, worthless husband had probably already met his end.

It wasn’t that she was heartless for thinking this; there was simply no real affection between them.

She and Wang Shen had married when she was 27, after being introduced by people from their village.

At the time, her mother had been in an accident, and she desperately needed a large sum of money for medical bills. With no other choice, she hastily married Wang Shen.

But it was only after they were married that she discovered this ”handsome young man,” as the village elders called him, didn’t even have a proper job in the big city.

He was an idle loafer who gambled for a living, his mind filled with unrealistic fantasies of striking it rich overnight.

So, they both depended on her meager teacher’s salary to get by.

Even their two apartments were bought with the money she had earned from awards and by scrimping and saving.

Otherwise, the two of them wouldn’t even have had a place to live.

But that wasn’t even the main reason she felt nothing for Wang Shen.

The biggest reason was that they had never done anything a man and a woman do together.

They say the vagina is the pathway to a woman’s heart.

But for all these years, the two of them had always slept in separate beds.

They hadn’t even slept in the same bed on their wedding night!

Because... Wang Shen was impotent! He was broken!

He was a man with erectile dysfunction!!!

After she pressed him, she finally learned that because he had jerked off too much in his youth, he’d lost his stamina and could no longer get it up.

He couldn’t do *that kind of thing* at all!!!

Let alone have any children!

Because of this, she was often criticized by the people from their village.

They called her a jinx, saying that marrying her brought misfortune to the family.

Had anyone ever considered the grievances in her heart?

But out of consideration for the help Wang Shen had given her, she couldn’t tell anyone the truth.

She could only bear it all in silence.

Because she knew in her heart that the only reason Wang Shen had married her was that he needed a shield.

So you can imagine, for five whole years, do you have any idea how she’s lived?

Thinking of this, Bai Jie looked at the reflection in the window, at her own long legs, pressed tightly together, and a trace of melancholy resentment flashed in her eyes.

This was her sorrow as a woman!

Before the apocalypse, she could ignore these things. She could focus wholeheartedly on working to support the family, taking care of Wang Shen, and striving to repay his kindness to her.

Although, after so many years, she had more or less repaid that debt already.

But after the apocalypse began, the days of hunger and torment, coupled with the occasional roars of terrifying monsters...

For so many days, she’d barely had a single night of good sleep.

If the physical torment was still bearable, the mental anguish was pushing her to the brink of collapse.

Fear of the unknown, uncertainty about the future—how could a lone, vulnerable woman bear it all!

So, after two days of deliberation, in what was a final act of pride as a woman...

She knew she had to start thinking for herself.

It was then that the young man, Mengde, appeared before her.

His chiseled face, explosive muscles, and powerful body fascinated her. They also gave her a sense of security she hadn’t felt in a long time.

Now that it was the apocalypse, if she had to choose someone, perhaps that Mengde was her best option.

It’s just that whenever she recalled... what he said that day... she couldn’t help but blush...

Pah!

’Who says things so bluntly!’

At the thought, her face turned beet-red...

Just then, two soft knocks, KNOCK KNOCK, came from the door, instantly putting her on alert...

”Who is it?”

”It’s me!”

’Oh, it’s that man!’

Bai Jie finally let out a sigh of relief.

Opening the door, she saw a familiar figure standing in the doorway.

It was the very man she had just been thinking about, Mengde!

As soon as he received Bai Jie’s text, he shot bolt upright, his whole body buzzing with excitement.

Luckily, the two sisters were fast asleep, so he made almost no noise when he left.

”You’re here...”

Hearing Bai Jie’s shy voice, he nodded and walked in without waiting for an invitation. The young woman followed nervously behind him.

He sat on the sofa and sized up the young woman before him.

Her features were exquisite, her hair draped over her shoulders, and it was clear she had just put on makeup.

Although she looked a little haggard, it didn’t detract from her beauty in the slightest.

Her breasts were magnificent, as full and round as orbs.

Her red slip nightgown was extremely short, barely covering her alluring backside.

Below, a pair of long, shapely legs were fair and delicate.

The toenails on her small, dainty feet were painted with a light pink polish.

In the dim light, she looked incredibly seductive and luscious.

Seeing this, Mengde appeared calm on the surface, but inside, his heart was already pounding wildly.

He hadn’t gotten any action in two whole days...

Besides, the moment he walked in, he heard the system’s notification.

It had only been two days, but the woman’s Affinity for him had skyrocketed from -90 to 30!

A huge leap in Affinity!

’This means something’s going to happen tonight...’

However, he forced himself to suppress his excitement and spoke in a calm tone.

”Sister Bai, why did you ask me to come over so late?”

”Aren’t you afraid your husband will get the wrong idea?”

Although he was already well aware of why she had called him over this late, it didn’t stop him from wanting to make her recognize her own position first.

He wanted to properly take this proud young woman down a notch...

Sure enough, seeing that Mengde wasn’t as happy to be summoned as she had imagined, Bai Jie looked a little disappointed.

She had thought the man before her desperately wanted her, but now it seemed she had been overthinking things.

For a moment, she didn’t know what to say.

”I... I...”

Seeing her hesitate, Mengde grew impatient. ”Sister Bai, just say what you need to say.”

”If I can help, I’ll definitely help, right?”

At his words, Bai Jie’s eyes reddened. She was about to say, ”Never mind, it’s nothing,” but the gnawing hunger in her body forcefully stopped her.

She gritted her teeth and squeezed her eyes shut.

”I just wanted to ask... if what you said the other day still counts...”

Mengde smiled, a mysterious smirk playing on his lips...
