Quick Transmigration: The Cannon Fodder's Comeback in the Era Tales

Chapter 698: Chapter 698: Fleeing Famine (Part 3)

Yuan Chun, with a look of heartache, picked up Geng Xiaowen and said, ”You’re not just hungry—you’re too hungry to feel it anymore. Oh, my poor grandchildren, when will the heavens send rain?”

”Mom, the village head and the others are packing their things,” said Dalin.

Yuan Chun sighed, pretended to wipe her eyes, and took her little grandson aside, ”Old Er, Er’s wife, let’s pack up too.”

”Mom, aren’t we going to eat something in the morning? If we are too hungry, we won’t have the strength to walk, and we’ll hold the team back,” Du Jincui said, rubbing her stomach that ached from hunger, her eyes on the half bag of chaff on the cart.

Yuan Chun sighed, opened the bag, grabbed a handful of chaff, and said, ”Eat it, there’s only this bit of chaff, if we save it, it will last just three days.”

”Mom, maybe we’ll find food tomorrow,” Du Jincui said, taking the chaff and reaching for the clay pot on the cart.

Inside was only a thin layer of water.

And some dirt.

But Du Jincui didn’t mind at all, stuffed a small handful of chaff into her mouth, chewed a few times, and then poured the last bit of water into her mouth.

Not caring at all whether her son and daughter were thirsting.

Geng Dazhuang went over to the village head’s side, and when he came back, he saw his wife had drunk all the water. His face darkened, ”There’s just this bit of water at home, how could you drink it all by yourself without leaving us a sip?”

”There was just half a mouthful of water, how could I save it?” Du Jincui snorted, swaying her hips as she headed over to the Du family.

The Du family’s resting place wasn’t far from the Geng family, so the Du family clearly saw what happened at the Geng’s.

However, Granny Du wasn’t around, and the rest of the Du family, seeing that Du Jincui wasn’t at a disadvantage, didn’t come over to make trouble.

The Du family had nothing left to eat. Yesterday, the eldest sister-in-law Du couldn’t bear the hunger anymore and secretly ate a small piece of Guanyin clay. At the time, she felt full and much better, but today she was starving again.

”Husband, we must find food today, or our family, young and old, over a dozen people, will starve to death,” Eldest Sister-in-law Du said with difficulty, bearing her stomach pain.

Du Laoda looked grimly at the Geng family’s direction, ”Last night, that little son from the Fan family came to us, wanting to buy a child.”

”Fan Lao Dou, what’s he buying a child for?” Du Laoda’s wife asked, puzzled, ”Where does he get the money to buy a child?”

”The night before, I saw him secretly cooking meat,” Du Laoda whispered, secretly glancing in the direction of the Fan family, ”Didn’t you realize their youngest little girl is missing?”

Du Laoda’s wife shivered, ”Husband, what do you mean?”

”I want to survive,” a fierce glint flashed in Du Laoda’s eyes, ”Tonight, I’ll talk it over with Lao Er and Lao San, but we absolutely can’t sell any of our Du family’s children.”

”Then you plan to...”

”Big Brother, where’s Mom?”

Before Eldest Sister-in-law Du could finish asking her question, Du Jincui walked over, forcing Eldest Sister-in-law Du to swallow back her words.

She looked at her sister-in-law’s hand in her pocket, ”Sister-in-law, you’re here to see Mom. Did you bring any food? Take it out, let Big Sister-in-law have a taste; I haven’t eaten anything for three days.”

Du Jincui put on a long face, ”Big Sister-in-law, I only have this small handful of chaff, I saved it from my own mouth, it’s for my mom. Are you trying to snatch food from my mom’s mouth?” ℯℯ𝘭.

Granny Du was a notorious wicked mother-in-law in the village. If it weren’t for Geng Dazhuang and Du Jincui secretly getting involved, leading to intimacy, Yuan Chun certainly wouldn’t have wanted to become in-laws with Granny Du.
