Married the Sick Uncle – Just Waiting to Inherit His Fortune

Nathan Fawcett was very happy that Anna Linden had asked him to bring Anne Sutton back, so he decided not to argue with his mother for the time being.

Nathan Fawcett nodded. ”I’m listening.”

Anna Linden said, ”Although Anne Sutton is here, I am only letting her stay. I will never acknowledge her as part of our family.”

”...” Hearing his mother’s words, Nathan Fawcett replied, ”She never said she wanted to be part of the family. If she gets unhappy at any point, she’ll leave.”

”What do you mean?” Anna Linden grew anxious. ”Is that a threat? What do you mean she’ll leave if she’s unhappy? I only said a few words. Even if we’re living together, I don’t have to suck up to her, do I? I am her elder, after all.”

’I can’t believe it. I haven’t even said anything, and Anne Sutton is already trying to put me in my place.’

At this, Anna Linden was rendered speechless.

Nathan Fawcett looked at his mother and said helplessly, ”That’s not what she meant. I’m just saying that she doesn’t need you to treat her like family, and she isn’t planning on staying here forever.”

Anna Linden had wanted to say something to quell her own dissatisfaction and let Anne Sutton know just who was the master of this house.

But after what Nathan Fawcett said, she felt like she’d been made to look like a fool!

’Am I supposed to be afraid that if I say a few words, Anne Sutton will run off, and then I’ll have to send someone to beg her to come back?’

’That would be too much trouble!’

After finishing the food in her bowl, Anna Linden stood up and said to Nathan Fawcett, ”I’m leaving for work.”

With that, she went upstairs, grabbed her things, and came right back down.

After Anna Linden left, Anne Sutton finished getting ready. She came downstairs, saw Nathan Fawcett and Ian, but didn’t see Anna Linden. ”Where’s your mother?” she asked.

”She went to work.”

”She didn’t eat?” Anne Sutton asked.

Nathan Fawcett said, ”She already ate.”

The housekeeper said with a grin, ”Ms. Sutton made breakfast today, and Ms. Linden had two whole bowls.”

Anne Sutton was a bit surprised to hear that. A moment ago, Anna Linden had looked so disgusted that Anne had assumed she wouldn’t eat anything she made. ’But... she actually ate it?’

Anne Sutton said, ”Well, I’m off too. I need to get to work!”

Nathan Fawcett looked at her. ”Do you want me to drive you?”

”No need.”

Ian said, ”I want to go to the hospital too.”

He used to hate going to the hospital more than anything, but now that he heard Anne Sutton worked there, he wanted to go.

Anne Sutton glanced at the little guy and said, ”Why don’t you stay home? I have the day off tomorrow, so I’ll stay and play with you then. Okay?”

”Mm, okay,” Ian nodded.

...

「That afternoon」

Anne Sutton got off work early. The hospital hadn’t assigned her much to do, and for once, Anna Linden hadn’t made her work overtime, so she came home early.

On the way back, Anne Sutton’s feelings were a little complicated. Although Anna Linden wasn’t giving her a hard time anymore, her days at the hospital were spent doing menial, entry-level tasks instead of anything important.

She had been a doctor for many years; she had started taking her own patients in her very first year at the hospital.

She had always had a talent for medicine; otherwise, she would never have considered Anna Linden her role model back then.

Now, constantly doing such simple tasks made her feel like she was falling off track, which naturally made her a little anxious.

When Anne Sutton walked in, she saw Ian sitting on the sofa, talking to Chubby. Ian’s tone was full of pride. ”Who told you I don’t have a mom? I have a mom now! And my mom is super pretty.”

”You’re lying!” Chubby said. ”Where’d you get a mom? You’re just a kid with no mom.”

Although Chubby had teased him about this before, Ian had a mother now, and with that came confidence. He didn’t take Chubby’s words to heart like he used to. ”You’ll see tonight. My mom is super pretty! Not like your mom, who’s so mean...”

Anne Sutton stood to the side, a smile playing on her lips as she watched her son proudly showing her off.

Ian suddenly turned, saw her, and exclaimed in pleasant surprise, ”Mom!”

He hadn’t expected her to be back so soon!

Anne Sutton glanced at Chubby. She certainly recognized the boy; she’d seen him bullying Ian during her previous visits to the Linden Family’s home.

’It’s my own fault,’ she thought. ’I wasn’t by Ian’s side, which is why he was made fun of by others.’

Chubby saw Anne Sutton and asked doubtfully, ”This is your mom?”

Ian said, ”What do you think? Isn’t my mom pretty? She’s the prettiest mom in the whole world!”

Chubby looked at Anne Sutton. She seemed very gentle and was, admittedly, quite pretty.

It was just...

He still found it hard to believe.

Just then, Chubby’s mother walked over. When Lana Langley saw Anne Sutton, she exclaimed, ”It’s you!”

Chubby’s mother, Lana Langley, was a distant cousin-in-law to Ethan Linden. At home, Ethan even had to address her as ”Second Sister-in-law.”

Nathan Fawcett had kicked her out before, but since he had been spending more time in Westhaven recently, she had managed to worm her way back in.

Before Anne Sutton could reply, Lana Langley said, ”Have a seat!”

She acted as if she were the lady of the house.

Anne Sutton sat down. Lana Langley looked at her and said, ”I heard Ethan Linden brought a woman back. I was wondering who it could be! I never expected it to be you!”

Anne Sutton said, ”It seems you remember me.”

”Of course I do,” Lana Langley said. ”What, you don’t remember me? I haven’t settled the score with you for bullying my son last time.”

Anne Sutton looked at the woman and said, ”If I remember correctly, your son was the one who started it that time, wasn’t he?”

Lana Langley said, ”That was in the past. You were young and didn’t know any better, so I won’t blame you. But now that you’re going to be living here, as Ethan Linden’s second sister-in-law, I have to tell you a few things about this household so you understand the rules.”

Hearing the word ”rules,” the corner of Anne Sutton’s mouth twitched.

Lana Langley said, ”I am Ethan Linden’s second sister-in-law.”

”But from what I’ve heard, Ethan Linden doesn’t have any brothers. Isn’t he the only son in the Linden Family?” ’If Ethan had any brothers, Anna Linden wouldn’t have needed to bring Nathan Fawcett into the family,’ she thought.

Lana Langley shot Anne Sutton a speechless look and said, ”Even if they’re not blood brothers, they’re still brothers. My husband’s grandfather and Ethan Linden’s grandfather were brothers. We all share the surname Linden. We’re all one family.”

”That’s a pretty distant relation, then!”

Seeing Anne Sutton’s dismissive attitude, Lana Langley fumed. She had originally planned to take advantage of Anne’s ignorance to establish her authority, but she never expected Anne to completely disregard her.

She said to Anne Sutton, ”It’s not your place to say whether it’s distant or not! The Old Master hasn’t said anything about it. From now on, when you see me, you will respectfully call me ’Second Sister-in-law’.”

”...” Anne Sutton said, ”We’ll see.”

Seeing how uncooperative Anne Sutton was, Lana Langley started to probe about the real issue. ”I hear you’re Ethan Linden’s sister-in-law.”

Anne Sutton fell silent for a moment.

She didn’t know much about the Linden Family’s affairs, so she was currently weighing how to answer Lana Langley’s question.
