Married the Sick Uncle – Just Waiting to Inherit His Fortune

Anna Linden said, ”I need you to promise me that you won’t get together with Anne Sutton, no matter what! If you do...”

”Then what?” Nathan Fawcett cut in, finishing her sentence. ”If I get together with Anne Sutton, you’ll disown me, is that it?”

Anna Linden stiffened. ”I didn’t say that!”

’I can’t believe he’s already cutting me off!’

Anna Linden continued, ”Just don’t forget who you are right now. You are Ethan Linden, not Nathan Fawcett, the man who divorced her. You have to think about the company. If you marry Anne Sutton, what will people think? They only recognize Ethan Linden! If they find out you aren’t him, they’ll just kick you out, do you understand?”

Ever since Nathan Fawcett inherited the Linden Group, others have been watching him like hawks, desperate to find some fault in him and force him out of his position.

There were rumors that Ethan Linden was actually Nathan Fawcett, but no one had ever found any proof.

Chloe Chase, standing to the side, said, ”Nathan has always handled these matters very well. He even made an appearance at the Fawcett Group recently without anyone finding out who he was.”

She knew Anna Linden had a poor impression of Nathan lately, so she spoke up for him.

Hearing this, Anna Linden glanced at Nathan. Not wanting to push him too far, she said, ”Fine, I’m done talking. It just upsets you anyway. But if something happens to the company, I’ll go down with you. I suppose you’ll be happy then, when we’re both kicked out.”

Nathan looked at his mother. ”Don’t worry. I won’t let that happen.”

His mother was always lecturing him, but Nathan knew what was truly important.

Ethan Linden was gone. He would naturally take his place, care for this family, handle everything for him, and look after their mother.

”Good,” Anna Linden said. ”Since you claim Anne Sutton has no feelings for you, then you need to find a way to get married! Your uncle was pressing the issue just the other day. They’re all asking when you’re getting married! They all want to set you up.”

Now that Nathan was the Linden Family Head, countless people were trying to push their own female relatives on him, hoping he would marry one of them.

They couldn’t seize the position of Family Head, so they set their sights on the position of the Family Head’s Wife.

Nathan said, ”I’m not interested in getting married.”

Anna Linden said, ”If you don’t find someone yourself, you’ll eventually have to accept their choice! I have no desire to see you marry a spy planted in our home.”

Chloe Chase looked at Nathan, afraid he would reject his mother’s words again. ”Actually, I think your mother has a point. It really is time for you to get married!”

Stella Shields was sitting nearby.

Nathan shot her a glance and said impatiently, ”You all just want me to marry her, don’t you?”

When Stella Shields saw him look her way, his expression was icy. It was obvious how much he resisted the idea.

Stella felt a little awkward, but she wasn’t about to be foolish. She said to Nathan, ”You’re overthinking it. Your mother has other candidates lined up for you. I know you’re not willing to marry me, and I’m not going to make a fool of myself! Nathan, I’ve always considered you family. You’re the one who treats me like an enemy.”

She knew what Nathan was thinking now. He would despise anyone who wanted to marry him.

Especially since she used to have a relationship with Ethan Linden. There was no way he would ever marry her!

She wasn’t about to stick her neck out now!

Anna Linden said to Nathan, ”I’ve arranged a date for you. Go meet her tomorrow. You have to at least see her, no matter what. Otherwise, Anne Sutton might actually think she can use the child to marry you.”

Nathan knew his mother was only arranging this because she didn’t want him to be with Anne. He couldn’t be bothered to argue.

...

The next morning, Anne Sutton was up early making breakfast for Ian.

Ian was still asleep. The little guy had gone to bed late, so he was currently sleeping like a log.

While in the kitchen, Anne heard a knock at the door. She wiped her hands and went to open it.

Nathan Fawcett’s stern face appeared in the doorway. ”I’m here for Ian,” he said, looking at her.

”He’s still asleep.” Anne was surprised he was here so early. ”Why now? I was about to have breakfast with him.”

”Go ahead and eat.” Nathan sat down. He’d only stood in the doorway yesterday; today was the first time he’d actually come inside.

He surveyed the apartment as Anne went back into the kitchen. ’This place is tiny.’

So small you could hear a conversation in the living room from anywhere inside.

Nathan asked, ”Why did you come all the way to Veridia? Things were fine in Westhaven, weren’t they? Why come here and subject yourself to this?”

Hearing this, Anne retorted, ”In your dreams. You expected to take Ian and just leave me behind, never letting me see my own son again?”

Anne knew that if she hadn’t come here, Nathan would never have brought Ian back to Westhaven. She would have gone her whole life without ever seeing him again!

That’s why she had to come here, no matter what.

Nathan said, ”This place isn’t for you.”

”So I was just supposed to do as you say and never see Ian again?” Anne grew agitated. ”How could you? You knew how badly I wanted a child, yet you managed to hide him from me all this time? Nathan Fawcett, you’re so cruel!”

Nathan sat on the sofa, listening to Anne’s accusations. He didn’t answer, knowing that anything he said would only upset her more.

He considered this for a moment before saying, ”Our arrangement was transactional. We each got what we wanted. Now that we both have it, you have regrets? How was I supposed to know you’d change your mind?”

”...” Hearing this, Anne said, ”Well, I’m telling you now: I regret it! I want Ian, and I want to be with him.”

Nathan said, ”I already told you, if you want to see him, I can arrange it.”

”Anytime?” Anne asked.

Nathan said, ”No. The Linden Family situation is complicated. If you come around too often, my mother will be displeased, and she’ll inevitably give you a hard time. Once a week, at most.”

”...” Anne said to Nathan, ”No way! That’s not nearly enough!”

Nathan said, ”Don’t push your luck, Anne! I’m already compromising. Besides, you have your own job.”

”Ian won’t agree to that,” Anne said. ”I want to see him more!”

Especially now that she knew he was her son, Anne desperately wanted to spend more time with him, to talk with him. It felt like no amount of time together would ever be enough.

Just last night, she had talked with Ian for hours, yet it felt as if their conversation was far from over.

’And Nathan actually expects me to only see him once a week!’

Seeing that she wouldn’t agree, Nathan mocked her. ”Is this how women are? So damn hypocritical. Anne, why do you insist on getting tangled up with me? Everyone’s saying you’re not doing this for Ian, but because you want to marry me. Don’t tell me they’re right?”
