Married the Sick Uncle – Just Waiting to Inherit His Fortune

”Even if I was with her, the child was an accident. She tricked me; otherwise, I never would have let her get pregnant. Anne, I thought with the Sutton family’s situation, you wouldn’t leave me. I truly never expected that you would one day marry Nathan Fawcett. Ever since you married him, I’ve been so bitter. I often lie awake all night, deeply regretting what I said to you at the hospital. But back then, I had no way of turning back, and I couldn’t afford to offend him. Do you understand?”

”...So what about later? After Nathan Fawcett left, you got engaged to Mia Shaw and even blamed me for ruining your engagement ceremony. So, let me guess, you were forced into that too?”

’His lies were one story after another.’

’His ability to lie with a straight face was truly top-notch!’

’She’d almost believed him.’

Charles Prescott said, ”I told you, I never actually intended to marry her. The engagement was just for show, for the good of the company. Yes, I care deeply about the company. To me, two things in this world are the most important: the company, and you! Anne, I’ve already lost you. I don’t want to lose the company now, too!”

”It looks like you’re asking for my help again, then?”

”Go talk to Ethan Linden,” Charles Prescott said. ”Go and persuade him. Tell him not to be so spiteful. Doesn’t he want the company? I can give it to him! Just tell him not to sacrifice the company in the process!”

Anne Sutton was rather surprised to hear this. She looked at Charles Prescott. ”You’re really willing to give the company to Ethan Linden?”

Charles Prescott said, ”Didn’t you say it yourself? None of this was ever supposed to be mine! Maybe this is my karma. I hurt that child, and you’ve hated me for it ever since. That child is gone, but now Ethan Linden has shown up! Everything in this world seems predestined, as if it was all arranged in advance. It feels like no matter how hard I fight for things that aren’t mine, it all comes to nothing in the end!”

Anne Sutton hadn’t expected Charles Prescott to say any of this, and she couldn’t tell if he was telling the truth. But she was genuinely surprised when he said he was willing to give the Fawcett Group to Ethan Linden.

...

Seeing Anne looking at him, Charles Prescott said, ”Will you help me talk to Ethan Linden? Please?”

”...” Anne Sutton said, ”Why don’t you go talk to him yourself?”

Charles Prescott said, ”He probably wouldn’t believe me if I told him. But if you do, he’ll believe you.”

’Charles Prescott wasn’t sure why, but he had a feeling that coming to Anne would give him a glimmer of hope.’

’After all, Ethan Linden had said it himself: if it weren’t for Anne, he wouldn’t be here fighting him for all this.’

’If he could just get Anne’s forgiveness, surely Ethan Linden wouldn’t target him so relentlessly anymore, right?’

Anne Sutton said, ”He won’t believe me either.”

Charles Prescott said, ”That’s okay. Anne... if one day I really gave up everything, would you come back to me?”

Anne Sutton stared at Charles Prescott. ”If you’re not awake yet, you should go take another nap. Save yourself the trouble of daydreaming in broad daylight.”

Hearing her words, Charles Prescott gave a small laugh, his eyes filled with a deep sorrow. ”So I really have lost you after all.”

...

That afternoon, Anne Sutton was in her office, keeping her mother company.

Nathan Fawcett knocked on the door.

Seeing him at the door, Anne Sutton said, ”Are you off work?”

Nathan Fawcett came over, stood beside her, and glanced at Mrs. Sutton. ”Your mom isn’t awake yet?”

”She just ate and fell asleep,” Anne Sutton said.

She had spent the entire day with her mother and was feeling quite tired.

Nathan Fawcett looked at Anne Sutton and asked, ”How was today?”

Anne Sutton said, ”It was fine.”

”Is there nothing you want to tell me?” Nathan Fawcett looked at her pointedly.

Anne Sutton looked at the man. ”What is it you want to hear?”

When she didn’t bring it up, Nathan Fawcett lowered his gaze. ”It’s nothing. I just heard Charles Prescott came looking for you today.”

’The moment he’s in a bad mood, the first thing he does is run to Anne.’

’How interesting!’

Hearing his words, Anne Sutton finally understood. ”Oh, so that’s what this is about!”

Nathan Fawcett said, ”It’s nothing important. I was just asking.”

Anne Sutton said, ”I didn’t tell you because I didn’t think it was worth mentioning. Charles Prescott came and told me he’s willing to give the company to you, and asked you to stop doing things that are bad for it. But he’s a habitual liar, so I couldn’t tell if he was being genuine or not. That’s why I wasn’t going to bring it up.”

Nathan Fawcett asked Anne Sutton, ”That’s all?”

Anne Sutton nodded. ”Mhm. It’s probably because you said you came back for me. He must have taken you at your word, so he figured pleading with me might actually be useful.”

Nathan Fawcett looked at her. ”So what do you think? What do you want me to do?”

Anne Sutton replied, ”It’s your business, so do whatever you want. I have no demands, as long as the inheritance doesn’t end up in the hands of a Prescott.”

Hearing her words, the corner of Nathan Fawcett’s mouth twitched into a small smile. ”Alright then.”

Anne Sutton looked up at Nathan Fawcett. He had been at work, so he was formally dressed in a suit and tie.

Anne Sutton asked, ”Was work busy today?”

”It was fine,” Nathan Fawcett said. ”I had our support for the Sutton Family cut off. Your dad is probably having a huge headache right now.”

Hearing this, Anne Sutton said, ”That was a brilliant move! I was never on board with you helping my dad in the first place. He may be my father, but he’s always screwing over his own family. He’s one of Charles Prescott’s people! The only reason Charles ignores him now is because he’s outlived his usefulness.”

Hearing that her father’s company was in trouble, Anne Sutton felt no anxiety. Instead, she felt a deep sense of satisfaction.

Nathan Fawcett had always known she was the type who enjoyed getting revenge.

Even her own father was no exception.

Perhaps because he himself had once hated his own father for having an affair, Nathan Fawcett could understand how she felt.

He said to Anne Sutton, ”Are you done for the day? When are you heading home?”

Hearing him, Anne Sutton glanced at him. ”Let’s go.”

She stood up and glanced at her mother.

Her mother had other people at the hospital to look after her.

She just came during the day to keep her company.

...

Maya Evans finished cooking and knocked on a door, calling out to her daughter Yvonne Evans and son Dylan Evans. ”Come on out, dinner’s ready!”

”Is Dad back yet?” Dylan Evans asked.

Maya Evans said, ”He’ll be back any minute!”

”Mom,” Yvonne Evans said, ”will we really get to go to the Sutton family with Dad someday?”

They had always looked forward to it, and they wanted to take Sean Sutton’s last name, instead of living in the shadows like this.

It would be wonderful if they could join the Sutton family.

Maya Evans said, ”Don’t worry. It’ll definitely happen.”

Although she had never met Mrs. Sutton, she knew the Sutton family’s affairs like the back of her hand and had Mrs. Sutton’s personality completely figured out.
