High School of Demon Hunting

Chapter 1166: Chapter 228 Sin Bearer

”mia-mia what does it matter to me... huhulu.”

A fat man with a pig face mask was holding a plate of pastries, munching energetically when he suddenly heard Friedman’s criticism and immediately became displeased, ”Aren’t you the one who’s always the latest?”

”An error is an error. Finding all sorts of reasons to exculpate oneself after making a mistake, even pushing the blame onto others... is a very childish behavior,” said a witch with a cat mask in a mocking tone. ”For any organization, a member who lacks the courage to take responsibility is of no value for training.”

Hearing this, Friedman’s figure abruptly stiffened involuntarily associating the witch’s words with his own predicament. However, instead of an enlightening epiphany, the directness of the witch’s words only made him feel exposed and mortified as if left naked in front of a crowd.

Noticing the fluctuating aura around Lucifer, a wizard with a Fox Mask hurriedly interrupted, ”The Fallen Angel was just reflexively objecting a bit, there was no intention to offend...”

The attempt to smooth things over was so inadequate that Friedman couldn’t help but scrutinize the one with the Fox Mask—Mammon—closely, trying to determine whether his words were a provocation or a mere slip of the tongue.

Mammon promptly realized the impropriety of his own words and cleared his throat, emphasizing, ”Let’s not waste time on such trivial matters... Time is precious. Let’s discuss something substantial.”

”Like what we should have for lunch today,” the fat man with the pig face mask snickered, picking up a piece of matcha cake from his plate and stuffing it into his mouth.

Friedman glanced at Beelzebub with disgust.

Even though he knew Beelzebub stood for Gluttony, and that the fat man in the black cloak might actually be a dwarf with anorexia, it didn’t mean he would allow anyone to indulge in gluttony at the conference table. This was a basic matter of etiquette expected by the nobility Under the Moon.

In a sense, his aversion to Beelzebub was very fitting for his identity as ’Lucifer’: Pride.

”You all called me here today... just to discuss this kind of issue?”

Friedman retracted his disdainful gaze, dragged his heavy steps, and sat down heavily in his seat, asking in a hoarse voice.

His words made the other six in the meeting room simultaneously turn to look at him.

”So, you mean to say you didn’t summon us today?” Samael with the Wolf Head Mask asked in a suppressed voice.

”Hmm?” Friedman’s brow furrowed under the Lucifer mask.

Although he disliked Samael’s wolf head mask, he didn’t think Samael was a fool. Since Samael said so, and nobody contradicted him, it meant that the other six had already briefly discussed this issue before he entered the room.

Does that mean this gathering wasn’t called by any of the seven of them?

Thinking this, Friedman’s mood became somewhat gloomy, ”I do have some ideas I’d like to discuss here... but not today. If it was me convening the meeting, even out of courtesy, I would be the first one here.”

Hearing his reply, the meeting room fell into silence for a moment.

If none of the seven had called this meeting, it meant the guy nobody liked had shown up.

The candles hanging upside down from the ceiling burned slowly, their light casting downward, outlining the beautiful spindle body of the flames. A droplet of wax that hadn’t fully burned trickled along the wick, slowly seeping out of the flame. Just as it was about to drip down, it was drawn by an invisible force and assimilated back into the base of the wick, causing the candlelight to flicker slightly.

In the flickering candlelight, a figure silently appeared at the very center of the conference table, seated cross-legged in front of the withered flowerpot.

This figure wore a sleek white mask that was featureless, with no eyes, nose, or mouth, resembling a thoroughly cleaned egg. Just that in a corner of this ’egg’ was a tiny septagram insignia, quite unnoticeable.

”Yo, everybody... is all here~~”

The Faceless Man waved around and said in a tone he thought was witty, ”I’m terribly sorry... I just helped a little fishman baby back into the water on my way here, which took a little bit of time.”

Friedman, supporting his bat mask’s chin, darkly looked towards the figure in the center of the table, and hoarsely said, ”Get down...”

”That’s not something a bat spirit should say,” the Faceless Man ’tsked tsked’, raised a finger to his lips, and chuckled softly, ”Therefore, I declare you guilty... You ought to keep silent.”

As soon as the words were spoken, Friedman felt an invisible bind appear over his mouth, sealing it shut.

The young duke of Karen’s family had an angry look in his eyes, yet ultimately he refrained from making any excessive gestures. Because the guy wearing the egg mask indeed had the right to do so.

As a secret student organization, the Seven Sins might have only seven official members, but outside of the seven, there was another who bore the responsibility of supervision—a ’Sin Bearer’ tasked with inspecting whether there was any violation of ’rules’ among the Seven Sins.

What the rules were, Friedman wasn’t exactly sure. Theoretically, within this secret society organized by the students, they could do anything, including trading human souls and bartering fox race slaves—though they hadn’t engaged in the aforementioned trades.

All he knew was that this Sin Bearer wielded great power, capable of influencing policy-making at First University, student council arrangements, and also able to acquire many prohibited items strictly regulated by the Mage Alliance from outside the school, and had varying degrees of contact with many hunting teams in the New World.

Additionally, the Sin Bearer had a veto power over any external actions of the Seven Sins, meaning without the consent of the Sin Bearer, no member of the Seven Sins could act in the name of the organization externally.

This made the ’Sin Bearer’, from a certain perspective, seem like the leader of the Seven Sins.

The sin-muted Lucifer contemplated irritably, wondering why the founders of the Seven Sins had sought to invite such an influential figure into the organization, and at the same time, a thought emerged in his mind whether the Sin Bearer could help him obtain Augustus’s position.

Pleased to see no more clattering noises in the meeting room, the Sin Bearer raised two fingers again:

”Today, I’ve called you here for two matters.”

”The first one, which is closely related to everyone... The issue with the Fishman Tribe has been dragged out too long, and the conflict between Jiuyou and Alpha is becoming more severe.”

”This is not good... very bad indeed.”

”This is a school, a place for everyone to learn. Magic is interesting and fun... So, I believe it’s time to end this farce in the school.”

”I know among those present, there are people from Alpha, as well as from Jiuyou. And surely you all have some prestige and ability among the students on both sides.”

”I hope you will use these abilities to maintain stability and unity in the school... rather than the opposite.”

Listening to the figure’s words, Friedman felt a ludicrous mix of absurdity and reality.

How did they, a group who used Devil’s names as aliases, hidden in the deepest part of the campus, known for ambushing the student council and the School Works Committee, become messengers of campus peace?
