Rebirth: Splendid Marriage in the 80s

Chapter 1056: Chapter 1057: Return Kindness with Ingratitude

”Porridge?” he called out irritably.

Chiang Xiao rolled her eyes and shoved the cracked thermos into his hands.

Meng Chaojun initially thought he wouldn’t be able to hold it, as his hands had been completely weak just moments ago. Yet unexpectedly, his hands were steady, no longer trembling.

He was stunned for a moment.

Old Meng grunted, ”Do you feel much better now?”

”Dad, I think it’s starting to wear off.”

”Wear off my ass!” Old Meng spat, ”Do you know what Little gave you to drink? That’s some rare potion!”

Meng Chaojun looked toward the military canteen Chiang Xiao held, repeating bewilderedly, ”Potion?”

He just thought it had a slight taste of tea. That was potion?

”What kind of medicine works that fast?”

Old Meng walked to the door, looked outside, then closed it and returned to the bedside, lowering his voice.

”Back then, Brother Chiang used his own brewed medicines and medicated liquors to save many of our brothers, including Old Xue and me. I’ve remembered it all these years, you should know this, right? Little has been gathering herbs with her grandfather since she was young, and she’s learned quite skillfully! Plus, she’s found some top-notch herbs deep in the mountains!”

Chiang Xiao hadn’t expected Old Meng to tell Meng Chaojun all this; she initially wanted to interrupt him, but then chose to remain silent.

She didn’t want to be the good-goody. With someone like Meng Chaojun, if her medicine and Spirit Spring Water could actually save him, he should at least remember her favor.

Even if she didn’t expect him to repay the favor, having him owe her would prevent him from constantly using his seniority to obstruct her and Meng Xinian.

Using gratitude to make demands was a tacky move, but she went ahead regardless.

Although the noblest character in people discourages expecting repayments for favors, it doesn’t mean one should repay kindness with ingratitude.

Meng Chaojun looked at Chiang Xiao.

He recalled that time when Fong Jianye was beaten by Gao Wei and ended up in the intensive care unit.

Had the Fong Family been searching for that girl ever since? Was that Chiang Xiao?

Was Chiang Xiao the girl Qingie told him about, the one rumored to be flirtatious?

”The good stuff Little brews herself isn’t for just anyone! If not for the sake of your father and son, you think you’d even get a taste?” Old Meng looked at him disparagingly, ”Dream on!”

He had no doubt about Chiang Xiao’s possession of supreme herbs and her skills in concocting traditional Chinese medicines.

Although Songhai always told him that he really hadn’t taught Little much and only knew some basic herbs, nothing more.

But after all, there was the fact that they had saved so many lives before!

Songhai said it was just luck finding treasures in deep mountains, but why couldn’t others concoct them?

Anyway, he always thought Songhai was just too honest and too modest.

As for Chiang Xiao, Xinian once told him that she was really lucky, and indeed, the deep mountains of Bai Gu Mountain were full of treasures, and she had found quite a lot.

The treasures, naturally, were rare medicinal herbs.

”But let me tell you, Meng Chaojun, if you’re not ungrateful, you’d better keep this tightly sealed! Even from your wife! If Little is ever troubled because of this, I won’t let you off the hook!”

Meng Chaojun looked at Chiang Xiao, shocked.

The reason he was shocked was half because of his father’s words, and the other half was because he realized his headache was gone, and his chest didn’t feel tight anymore!

Though he still felt somewhat fatigued, compared to earlier, he had improved so much!

And before they had come in, he clearly hadn’t even been able to sit up on his own!
