Chapter 539: Chapter 539: Backing Up the Younger Sister

Mrs. Chen took a few deep breaths and forced a smile when she heard this.

”It’s really not what you think, Xiao Rui. You’ve misunderstood!”

Han Xiaorui gave a humorless smile. ”Mrs. Chen, you’re not the only smart person in the world, and everyone else isn’t a fool. I can swallow my anger today, but I know you’ll find plenty of other ways to make my sister’s life difficult in the future.”

”Chen Wenxuan is your son, and he’s also my sister’s husband. He’s a man, so there’s a lot he simply doesn’t understand. But I’m a woman, and I know all the underhanded games people play.”

Granny Cai stepped forward at this moment. She never lorded the fact that she had saved Chen Wenxuan’s life over anyone.

But now, she had to speak up and say what’s right. ”Mrs. Chen, I only just found out about Xiao Jing and Wenxuan’s wedding myself. You didn’t write Xiao Rui a single letter, and you didn’t even call.”

”Is the Chen family so poor you can’t afford a phone call or a telegram? Or are you all so busy you don’t have time to write a single letter? You come from a prominent family yourself. Back when you got married, didn’t your two families get in touch with one another?”

Mrs. Chen said awkwardly, ”This matter is my fault. I had Wenxuan tell you, and I thought that would be enough! I apologize to you now!”

”But I didn’t realize you placed so much importance on customs from back home. We’ve been living abroad for so long that everything has become Westernized. We keep things simple.”

”Keeping it simple would also be less tiring for Xiao Jing. After all, they’ve been together for so long, and she’s pregnant. I was so focused on preparing for the wedding that I overlooked this matter.”

Hearing this, Han Xiaorui became even more upset. ”Oh! Is that so! Then that nanny of yours is incredibly ill-mannered! The moment she arrived, she was pointing her finger and yelling at my sister. The way she carried herself, she was just like a wicked mother-in-law from a TV show.”

”I almost thought Mr. Chen had divorced and remarried! A mere servant dares to boss my sister around? Where did she get such nerve?”

”Mrs. Chen, let me ask you, this Aunt Liu, isn’t she just throwing her weight around because you’re her boss? Also, her daughter has her eyes on Chen Wenxuan. Did you know that, Mrs. Chen?”

”If you did know and you still let her bring soup to Xiao Jing and Wenxuan, weren’t you afraid she might poison it?”

Mrs. Chen’s face flushed red with shame upon hearing Han Xiaorui’s words.

’Han Xiaorui is using Aunt Liu to criticize me.’ And she was well aware that Aunt Liu’s daughter coveted Chen Wenxuan.

She had suggested several times that Han Xiaoqing and Chen Wenxuan stay in Germany, but Han Xiaoqing had always refused. After that, she had started to entertain the idea of her son getting together with Aunt Liu’s daughter instead.

’If his wife and child were here in Germany, my son would surely stay as well.’

She and her husband had spoken with their son’s advisor. Their son had a very high IQ and was exceptionally talented in mechanics.

With enough time, energy, and funding, he could achieve extraordinary things in the future.

This made Mrs. Chen even more determined to keep her son there.

”Xiao Rui, don’t be angry! This is not something Wenxuan and I wanted to see either. It’s just that exceptional people attract the attention of the opposite sex wherever they go. It’s unavoidable.”

”Wenxuan told me about it, and I’ve already warned them. They won’t come over again, you can rest assured of that! Even if you don’t believe me, surely you believe Wenxuan, right?”

Chen Wenxuan quickly said, ”Sis, don’t worry! I only have eyes for Xiao Jing, no one else. I will definitely treat Xiao Jing well. As soon as she graduates, I’ll bring her back to China!”

Mrs. Chen felt awful hearing this. The Chen family’s business was in Germany and across Europe and America.

The products they manufactured had no market in China. Moreover, according to relevant regulations, their products couldn’t even be mass-produced there.

Now, her son was promising Han Xiaorui and Han Xiaoqing, right to her face, that he would definitely return to China.

Mrs. Chen was deeply disappointed.

She opened her mouth, wanting to say something, but knew that speaking up now would be like pouring oil on the fire.

’With Han Xiaorui’s domineering personality, she’ll never let the wedding proceed smoothly.’

Hearing this, Han Xiaoqing looked up. ”Chen Wenxuan, you don’t have to make promises to me! Actions speak louder than words!”

After Mrs. Chen left, Chen Wenxuan didn’t see her out.

Just then, Ye Feng called Chen Wenxuan out to the backyard. ”After the wedding, go back to China.”

Chen Wenxuan was slightly taken aback. ”I can hand off my work here at any time and then leave!”

”It’s just that Xiao Jing is pregnant right now. Would it be bad for us to make the long journey back to China?”

Hearing this, Ye Feng smiled. ”Even if you can’t take a plane, you can always take a cruise ship. A luxury liner is quite comfortable, too.”

”I can tell your parents don’t approve of you and Xiao Jing getting married. Holding a wedding for you is just a stopgap measure.”

”Once Xiao Jing gives birth, the trivialities of daily life might wear away the passion in your love, leaving behind nothing but petty squabbles.”

”At that point, no matter how deep your feelings are, they will slowly be eroded away. In the end, there will only be one outcome: divorce!”

Chen Wenxuan wrung his hands nonstop upon hearing this, completely dumbfounded. ”Will it... will it really be like that?”

Ye Feng raised an eyebrow. ”Without the support of your elders, with one of you working and the other trying to finish her studies, all while raising a child... it’s really difficult. It will inevitably increase the arguments and friction between you.”

”You’re such a smart person. Can’t you sense that your mother doesn’t like Xiao Jing? That’s something that both Xiao Rui and I are very unhappy about.”

”Not even counting my own assets, what Xiao Rui has is more than enough to support Xiao Jing. But your mother still looks down on her, so there can only be one explanation.”

Chen Wenxuan hesitated for a moment, then replied, ”She always wanted me to stay in Germany. I wasn’t willing and refused her. After that, she talked to Xiao Jing, and Xiao Jing was even more unwilling to stay. After that, things seemed to... change.”

Ye Feng nodded. ”So you knew all along. In that case, you’d better make a decision. I hope you consider it carefully.”

”Right now, you have two paths. The first is to listen to your mother, stay in Germany, and then divorce Xiao Jing after your feelings for her have been worn away completely.”

”The second is to take Xiao Jing back to China after you get married. You can choose to teach at a university or work for a large corporation.”

”You might not earn as much in China as you would abroad, but your standard of living definitely won’t be any lower. Because Xiao Rui and I won’t allow you to live poorly. We are your solid financial backing.”

”The consequence of doing this is that your relationship with your own parents might grow cold. But when conflicts arise that can’t be reconciled, you simply have to make a choice.”

After saying his piece, Ye Feng patted Chen Wenxuan’s shoulder.

He had said everything that needed to be said, and with great clarity. What happened next was up to Chen Wenxuan.

Meanwhile, Han Xiaorui was hugging Han Xiaoqing. ”I really had no idea you were being treated so poorly abroad! If I had known, I never would have let you leave the country!”

Han Xiaoqing wiped her tears. ”Actually, I could feel their attitude toward me changing. I put up with it because, for one, I didn’t want to make things difficult for Chen Wenxuan, and for another, I wanted to learn more while I was here.”
