Surviving The Fourth Calamity

Carpenter had a timely realization, and Hill of course noticed it, but he was more aware that the girl truly didn’t touch his heart, or rather, was not suitable to be taught by him at all.

How to put it... He is actually a very self-centered person, and part of his cognition is, from a human perspective, somewhat odd.

Even though he occasionally thinks about putting oneself in others’ shoes, placing his feelings in a lower perspective to ponder, that’s only occasional, and his low doesn’t seem to be truly low.

This is also the reason he never denies his Earth Bear side.

Hill genuinely couldn’t consider whether there might be a small branch that would fall if bumped in the places he passed by, nor would he consider if there were any small stones under his feet that he might step on... because those things would naturally avoid him.

He didn’t even need to use brute force to crash through.

So, only someone like Russell, with extremely strong self-control and excellent self-learning ability, is barely suitable for Hill’s teaching style.

Moreover, his lack of endurance caused by long-term non-contact with ordinary people is a key factor... He is very unaccustomed to people who need repeated reminders yet still can’t grasp the situation.

Just like during that period, he wasn’t completely without reminders for Carpenter, but the girl could only ever understand parts of what was said.

If it weren’t for Russell constantly watching over her and reminding her at all times, Carpenter wouldn’t have made the formal mage path so easily.

Hill was quite satisfied with the girl’s character, but... she just wasn’t suitable for Hill’s teaching method.

Of course, Hill wasn’t incapable of being patient and meticulous, but Carpenter hadn’t reached the value for him to abandon his habits to adapt to her.

Hill finally understood some of Fran’s feelings: students can only be taught the ones they can accept.

He’s not an educator, doesn’t even match the basic attributes of a teacher.

So, without that ability, don’t dream that dream.

Even a child like Russell made Hill feel that his talents weren’t fully utilized... then seriously contemplating, someone better than Russell, could they still be ordinary people?

Talents, fate, and outstanding character and willpower, what kind of people would they need to be?

If it weren’t for this world being on the brink of destruction, how would Hill keep a child like Russell with entangled fate and World Will by his side, teaching him so diligently?

Once he understood this, he had a very clear understanding of his future: Russell is the beginning, and should also be the last for a period of time.

Hill didn’t know how long this period of time would be, but before he smooths out his bit of capriciousness and laziness, there probably won’t be anyone else.

His knowledge is vast, his ability strong, but he’s really not suited to be a teacher.

Hill actually understood this before... but he once thought he could teach students with good talents and character.

However, after realizing his definition of talents and character was slightly off, his ’could’ completely lost its meaning.

Having finally had a formal student, and a suitable apprentice to compare with, Hill now deeply understood his not-so-normal aspects.

If Carpenter appeared where Adrian is, he would gladly accept her as a formal student... although she has many flaws, they’re not beyond repair and can be remodeled with time and patience.

Hill certainly can see this too, but having him patiently find every flaw in the child and help her correct them without harming her self-confidence, he really couldn’t manage that.

He’s not entirely irresponsible... if he had accepted Carpenter before understanding this point, even if impatient, Hill would have stifled that irritation to teach her properly.

However, without external influence, Hill rarely makes decisions that would trouble himself.

So, Carpenter remains Carpenter... a faction student under Gilbert’s name, not his formal student.

Russell, though one, isn’t registered as a legacy disciple either.

In more fitting terms, Russell is still a named disciple, and even that under Gilbert’s name.

If he really doesn’t want it, these things can be rejected... it’s just that, under the premise of not violating his will, Hill is willing to take his part.

Especially because Russell has changed quite a bit due to him.

Hill was suddenly enlightened... Both Russell and Carpenter, their style of doing things and the people of this world appear consistent but have some subtle differences.

If they stayed by his side longer, this difference would become more pronounced; eventually, the two might become incompatible with this world.

Hill’s extensive considerations stemmed from observing Ruth’s mid-high tiered students sitting together.

He had only sat there briefly before noticing a slight atmosphere difference.

And this difference appeared within such a short time under his tutelage for these two children... Hill had made efforts to reduce daily interaction with them.

He truly didn’t expect that just teaching them spells would result in such a conspicuous consequence.

This had nothing to do with standard runes, it was all because of himself.

If Draculus had been teaching the two, they wouldn’t have faced this problem... Draculus’s attributes aligned well with this world.

If Hill really left everything behind after it’s all over, Russell and Carpenter, especially Russell, would inevitably endure a painful transformation whereby the freshly established concepts and beliefs collapse entirely, then rebuild them painfully.

Even whether they could stand again is uncertain.

Hill indeed doesn’t care if others suffer certain pains, but he never hopes it’s caused by him.

Especially these two people, whom he doesn’t dislike, and even has a faint admiration for.

Thinking of this, Hill couldn’t help but smile wryly: no matter how resolute he had been, as long as he remained Hill, he’d inevitably end up walking this path.

After all, it’s only leaving behind another Agleya Town in this world, it doesn’t require that much trouble, just a sufficiently safe and slightly connected base with this world.

Leaving these two children enough protection to allow them to maintain a certain autonomy until they can leave this world.

No wonder he had considered from the start what solutions to take once Russell was accepted.

Turned out, the day he pretended to be Gilbert, certain things became unchangeable.

As long as he remained the conscientious Hill, he couldn’t just walk away, regardless of the final outcome.

Hill tried recalling those small satellites seen before entering this planet... which were suitable for building a Magic Tower?

Russell’s question interrupted Hill’s thoughts: ”Teacher, Ulrich, and Felis... need to...”

Although he spoke hesitantly, Hill still understood his implication: Felis evidently received strong inheritance, he too is an ambitious person, may not necessarily want to accept Ulrich’s command.

”No need to worry about them.” Hill said calmly, ”The future of Hainarson was merely Ulrich’s desire, combined with the lives of your families that I started caring.

As for the path afterward, it depends on how they want to proceed.

The Tower of Dark Enigma won’t just leave them be, it’ll still come to recruit apprentices periodically.

It’s just that the Tower of Dark Enigma now has become the status of the past Dark Enigma Town.

The people of Hainarson can still choose their future according to their wishes.

I only intend to delay this period.”

Russell nodded... Even with ambition, Felis, as long as Hainarson Family is secure and Ulrich asks nothing of him, won’t affect the family itself.

Besides, his teacher is evidently more powerful than the real Gilbert, a master of Magic Arrays, as long as Ulrich follows his Array Diagram, he can definitely ensure the family’s safety for a long time.

Therefore, as long as Ulrich remains there, the family would have no problem... And if Ulrich met with some misfortune, how could ’Gilbert’ care about the Hainarson family’s survival?

Reminding himself before leaving to send another letter with sharp enough words back home to those foolish ones, Russell sighed heavily.
