Surviving The Fourth Calamity

Chapter 200: Chapter 35 Researching Demons Can Be Deadly

Hill’s study grew silent for a while; nobody wanted to recall that pig again.

After a period, Fran spoke, ”Then I shall take my leave.”

”Grandfather, please stay for dinner,” Hill said with a smile. ”The seafood Uncle Adrian brought is delicious.”

”It’s List’s cooking that’s good,” Adrian nodded. ”He prepared it himself using a puppet. It’s quite similar to what an Undead Tribe chef would make.”

Fran stayed, intrigued, and was quite satisfied with the meal. He asked List about his cooking methods.

Then, he presented List with a specially crafted puppet that could almost pass for a real person, very lifelike indeed.

Even List believed that the dishes made by this puppet were almost as good as his own, achieving 90% of his skill.

This ordinary, intelligence-lacking puppet had Hill immediately at ease, no longer worried about Fran’s legendary journey.

Hill knew how to make puppets too, but to craft one as adept as this was beyond his abilities.

List set this puppet to work as a maid in the Magic Tower, attending to chores throughout the building. Her distinct footsteps brought a semblance of liveliness to Hill.

Observing the Water Elementals, who were almost moving into the storage warehouse for Water Materials, he expanded their space by half and then immersed himself in crafting a container.

Hill reasoned that although a natural aura was important, those demigod sea monsters would probably prefer a more splendid appearance.

Most human mages wouldn’t craft such flamboyant containers; they generally believed that anything in the sea would corrode quickly.

They also would not use a substantial amount of Water Crystals just to maintain the appearance of a container.

Hill also told Adrian to make sure the container’s appearance was as splendid as possible, but Adrian definitely had no issues with that aspect.

If it were in his own world, he would surely be a staunch advocate of the Baroque style.

A few days ago, Snow Cloud Peak had visited and List had welcomed him, asking in detail about Edgar’s situation.

This player, always meticulous, had observed Edgar for several days before coming to List to report his findings.

Edgar had adopted a new surname, Kotor, for himself.

After entering the school and being a Knight Squire, he was directly placed in an advanced class. In the school, they no longer used the term ’attendants’ but referred to them as Squires.

Snow Cloud Peak mentioned that Edgar trained very hard and, having received a noble education, was much more knowledgeable than his classmates and quite popular; he was also very willing to help others.

After rewarding him handsomely, List watched as this member of the Undead Tribe checked back into the inn.

This member of the Undead Tribe seemed to have taken on William’s task of monitoring the mages who came here for research.

Lately, their Alliance’s players in this small town never numbered less than 1000.

List returned to the Magic Tower and reported the outcome to Hill.

Hill shook his head, speechless. The surname Kotor truly could drive the Earl mad.

The Earl took great pride in having defeated a Grand Knight of the Kotor Family in his youth and securing the title and lands in glory.

If others genuinely believed Edgar belonged to the bloodline of the Kotor Family, the only glory the Earl could boast of would become a mere joke.

Edgar, that boy, indeed had it in him.

Hill slowly pondered; though cold-hearted like his mother, he was better than the Countess who would not covet what was not hers.

Manton truly resembled the Earl the most.

As long as the Earl remained a Grand Knight, Manton, who could adapt and yield, wouldn’t harm him much.

The Earl had joined Manton to visit the Kral Clan partly because he felt he couldn’t ensure his safety with the people on Edward’s side.

In the native world, Grand Knights were still highly esteemed. A bit of disdain was far better than losing one’s life.

List quietly asked Hill, ”Sir, those Undead Tribe members, watching every day, what are they guarding against? Our spies here aren’t that significant, are they?”

”First to find spies, then to prevent which one has been corrupted by Demon Text.”

”Do we need to do anything?” List pondered his core of demon knowledge, agreeing with the possibility.

”No need,” Hill shook his head. ”We have plenty of Treants. The Forest Array causes significant damage to demons; any new corruptions are dead upon emergence.”

Hill thought for a moment and told List, ”Tell the Undead Tribe if there really is a corruption, to act quickly, or else they won’t be faster than my Treants.”

List couldn’t help but laugh. The Undead Tribe were guarding here daily just for these military exploits. If they weren’t quicker than the Treants, they’d probably die of frustration.

Perhaps List’s timely warning, or maybe the players received the alerts faster; when the first Fallen Mage surged skyward, attempting to flee the territory, he was immediately pinned down by the Undead Tribe’s long spear doused in Holy Water.

Fran only managed to open the window in time before the Fallen Mage breathed his last.

He looked down at the body that had completely changed; his skin turned a ghastly green, hands and feet morphed into claws, height surged over two meters, the face only bore coldness.

If not for Hill, who had driven out those neutral towards evil, this situation would have emerged much earlier.

Hill always viewed the world with kindness. Evicting these people was also for their sake, making it tough for Fran who had to wait a long time.

Seeing this terrible outcome, many mages who were just there for the spectacle finally understood that studying demonic entities was life-threatening, and many considered leaving.
