I Married the President

Chapter 205: Chapter 205: What a Sharp Tongue

Full of anticipation, Claire Sinclair walked downstairs, thinking he had some good news for her. But just as she reached his office door, she saw a high-society woman standing inside.

For a moment, Claire wanted nothing more than to turn around and leave, pretending she hadn’t seen a thing.

Aiden Howkins suddenly spoke up. ”Young Master Quincy, Mrs. Quincy, the Young Madam is here.”

The two he addressed looked toward the door in unison.

Claire had no choice but to brace herself and walk in. ”Mr. Quincy, did you need me for something?”

If she hadn’t been slapped, she would have politely called the woman ”Mrs. Quincy” or ”Ms. Quincy.” As it was, she pretended the woman was nothing but air, seeing nothing.

Mrs. Quincy stared at Claire with an odd expression. Her lips moved, but she seemed at a loss for words.

Adrian was the first to break the silence. ”Claire, my mother has something to discuss with you.”

”Here?” Claire raised an eyebrow. ’This is his office, after all.’

’Even though it’s the weekend, for him, weekends are just more workdays.’

Mrs. Quincy suddenly called out to the door, ”Aiden, close it.”

”Yes, Madam.” Aiden immediately shut the door.

With the outside world shut out, Mrs. Quincy finally turned to Claire’s delicate, pretty face and asked in a peculiar tone, ”Claire Sinclair, how did you and Adrian meet?”

”At my sister’s funeral,” Claire replied, her tone grudging.

’She slapped me and never apologized, and now she’s asking all these questions? The nerve!’

Mrs. Quincy frowned. ”Then when did you and Adrian start dating?”

”We never dated. Your son tricked me into marrying him. And you were right, Mrs. Quincy. A worthless girl like me doesn’t deserve your son. So you can stop asking. I’m going to divorce him—as soon as he’s free, we’ll do it.”

Upon hearing the word ”divorce,” a flash of delight appeared in Mrs. Quincy’s eyes, but it vanished as quickly as it came.

”The divorce is your own business. I won’t interfere. Last night, Yara told me you’re a reporter for the Astoria Daily?”

”I earned that position through my own hard work, not because your son pulled some strings for me,” Claire stressed.

Mrs. Quincy’s brow furrowed slightly. ”Claire Sinclair, what is this attitude?”

Claire found this laughable. ”Mrs. Quincy, you really do have a short memory. After how you humiliated me that night, did you really expect me to act like nothing happened?”

Mrs. Quincy didn’t reply.

Claire continued, ”Why should I be polite to someone who insulted me so viciously? Or were you hoping, Mrs. Quincy, that I would respect and adore you like a mother-in-law?”

Before, Mrs. Quincy’s silence had been a choice not to engage. This time, she was genuinely speechless.

’It seems this young woman isn’t as weak and useless as she appears.’

Mrs. Quincy’s perception of Claire shifted in that moment. Composed, she said, ”Quite the sharp tongue you have. Claire Sinclair, that night, I spoke to you without understanding the situation. I was in the wrong. Let me apologize. I’m sorry.”

Claire: ”...”

’An apology, just like that? She was a little stunned by the unexpected gesture.’

Having apologized, Mrs. Quincy turned to Adrian. ”Adrian, marriage is a huge deal. Why didn’t you discuss it with us? If Yara hadn’t told me, I’d still be foolishly trying to set you up with someone.”

Adrian replied in a low voice, ”I’ve been busy.”

”Too busy to make a phone call?”

”I wasn’t planning on telling you anyway.”

Mrs. Quincy was stunned into silence by his retort.

’Hahaha, this is hilarious!’

’I never expected this side of Mr. Quincy. Is it really okay for him to talk back to his own mother like that?’

The more Claire thought about it, the funnier it became. She couldn’t laugh out loud, so she had to stifle it, nearly giving herself an internal injury from the effort.
